1 Lifetime and (PED 116) Spring 2015 Part A of the Syllabus Anna Sedory, MS, ATC, CSCS SP Dickinson Building FAC Office Location: Adjunct Faculty Office (SP 1-320) asedory@germanna.edu Class days/times: Tuesday and Thursday 5:30-6:45pm Office hours: Tuesdays 4:15-5:15pm I. Introduction Course description: Provides for the study and application of fitness and wellness and their relationship to a healthy lifestyle. Defines fitness and wellness, evaluates the student's level of fitness and wellness. Students will incorporate physical fitness and wellness into the course and daily living. A personal fitness/wellness plan is required for the 2-credit course. Additional course description: Course lecture covers the following topics: General health of Americans, physical activity guidelines for health, general nutrition, weight management, stress management, lifestyle choices/management, principles of exercise, exercise testing, and other factors effecting health. Required textbooks and materials: Required: Hoeger and Hoeger. and. 10thEd. Athletic shoes and workout clothes. Learning outcomes: Demonstrate an understanding of the physiological benefits of movement, physical activity, and wellness. Define principles involved in increasing and maintaining physical fitness.

2 Evaluate and apply fitness and wellness concepts to individual lifestyle. Participate in movement and wellness activities. Design, implement, and evaluate a personal wellness program Develop an understanding of basic nutrition and its effect on weight, health, and exercise. 3 FINAL EXAM - Tuesday, May 12 4:30pm FINAL EXAM Course specific attendance policies: ATTENDANCE IS NECESSARY FOR SUCCESS IN THIS CLASS -Four absences will be permitted during the course. Each absence after this will drop your final grade by 5% (half a letter grade). -Tardiness is unacceptable. Three tardies equals one absence. Students who leave class or arrive late are considered tardy. -Absences that you wish to be excused must be unavoidable and/or an emergency. Please consider other non-classroom-based learning methods such as online or hybrid classes.** Academic dishonesty: Academic Dishonesty will be prosecuted to the full extent of institutional policy found in part B of the syllabus available on BlackBoard. Course plan for college closing: In the event of a College closure, all due dates will remain in effect unless notification is provided otherwise via from the instructor. For an extended closure, course materials will be made available on BlackBoard. Electronics (i.e. cell phones)/food classroom policy: NO electronics or food are permitted. Water is encouraged and MUST be kept in a closeable container. Grading policy and grading scale: LATE ASSIGNMENTS : Late assignments will not be accepted. Exams may not be taken late. MISSED EXAMS CANNOT BE MADE UP. UNAVOIDABLE ABSENCE : *Determined by the Instructor* If you MUST be absent, then you MUST PLAN AHEAD and arrange with the instructor to turn in assignments or take exams early.
