1 LEADING THE WAY TO A HEALTHIER COMMUNITY Weekly Update FEB. 3, 2017 Celebrate Valentine s Day with healthy choices Valentine s Day is a great time to celebrate love and can be a reminder to make healthy choices part of your everyday life. Whether you celebrate Valentine s Day on your own or with someone else, take steps to be a healthy valentine. BE ACTIVE AND EAT HEALTHY Plan an activity that encourages physical fitness. Regular physical activity can help control your weight, reduce your risk of heart disease and some cancers, improve mental health and mood, and increase your chance of living longer. Adults need 2 hours and 30 minutes (150 minutes total) of activity each week. You can break it up into smaller chunks of time during the day. It s about what works best for you, as long as you are doing physical activity at a moderate or vigorous effort for at least 10 minutes at a time. Treat yourself and loved ones to a meal that includes healthy options and foods low in saturated fat and salt, and limit sweets. Nutrition plays an essential role in maintaining overall health. Limit alcohol consumption. Excessive alcohol use can lead to long-term health problems, including heart disease and cancer. If you do choose to drink, do so in moderation, which is no more than one drink a day for women and up to two for men. Do not drink at all if you are pregnant, under the age of 21, or have health problems that could be made worse by drinking. CELEBRATE AMERICAN HEART MONTH Know your blood pressure and if it s high, make control your goal. Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries, which carry blood from your heart to other parts of your body. Uncontrolled high blood pressure is the leading cause of heart disease and stroke. Work with your health care provider to come up with a plan to control your blood pressure. Quit smoking, and if you don t smoke, don t start. Smokers can receive free resources and assistance to help quit by calling the QUIT-NOW quitline ( ) or by visiting the CDC s Tips from Former Smokers at cdc.gov/tobacco/campaign/tips/. Learn the most common symptoms of a heart attack and call immediately if these symptoms occur. The five major symptoms of a heart attack are: o Pain or discomfort in the jaw, neck, or back; VALENTINE, PAGE 3 EVENTS CALENDAR March 2: Auxiliary Book Sale HVCH Meeting Room Sale is from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Come browse the latest titles at 30% to 70% off retail prices. 2 Hocking Valley Community Hospital Weekly Update Page 2 Direct to You: From Latricia Johnston For over fifty years, Hocking Valley Community Hospital has cared for our community, and because we are nestled in the midst Latricia Johnston, Chief Public Relations officer of the highly visited Hocking Hills region it is not uncommon for us to treat patients from almost all 50 states, in addition to caring for our local friends and neighbors in Hocking County. If you recently read the Logan Daily or visited our Facebook page, then you also know that HVCH was recently awarded based on patient satisfaction scores for the care they received at our facility. That same article shared many of our accomplishments: HVCH provides care to 30 thousand patients per year in the Emergency Department and Urgent Care HVCH has had a zero surgical infection rate for the past 12 months HVCH completes over 5300 Cat scans per year and over 34,000 diagnostic radiological procedures HVCH completed over 2500 mammograms in 2016 with our new state of the art digital mammography machine. Our lab completed over 180,000 lab tests and our cardiac services department performed over 7,000 non-invasive cardiac procedures. Our Rehab department provided approximately 56,000 Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy treatments and modalities last year. HVCH performed nearly 300 sleep tests and our respiratory department close to 80K respiratory therapy procedures in Our pharmacy dispensed over 360,000 pharmacological doses by the end of 2016 New medical staff/services: General surgeon - Dr. Timothy O Brien; Psychiatrist - Tarek Aziz, M.D.; Dr. Imran Minhas, hospitalist; Specialty wound care treatment under the guidance of Dr. Brock Liden, and we expanded services in our Pain Management clinic. In February an additional psychiatrist will arrive and in April Dr. Mark Holt, an orthopedic surgeon will also join our staff. Purchase of new digital mammography machine enhancing the ability to diagnose and treat breast cancer sooner. But in addition to items DIRECT, PAGE 3 HVCH retirees recognized Hocking Valley Community Hospital recognized two retiring employees this week, Bob Schmidt (top), HR Director, and Dr. Michael Alexander (bottom). Bob served as HVCH s HR Director for 10 years and Dr. Alexander served in the Urgent Care for 10 years. We wish them the best in retirement! 3 Hocking Valley Community Hospital Weekly Update Page 3 DIRECT listed above, did you also know that our medical staff and employees provide outstanding care to all of our patients regardless of their ability to pay, providing nearly $5 million of uncompensated services annually to patients who desperately need our services? Yes, you read that correctly nearly $5 million of charitable care is provided to our community right here from within our hospital. Because of this, philanthropy has always played a crucial role in the success of HVCH. From building expansions to significant medical advancements, we could not do the outstanding things we do without the support of our generous donors. Throughout the upcoming year I would like to share some of the ways our donors are partnering with HVCH, starting with our annual partnership program. Team up with other philanthropists and the leading healthcare provider in Hocking County to make a significant impact on health and wellbeing in your community through annual support. Whether you are an individual or corporation our staff can design a giving program centered around your charitable desires, that will allow you to help deliver and see the immediate benefits to our patients through program expansion or purchase of advanced medical equipment. Depending on the level you wish to support, you or your business may receive partnership recognition, at special events or in printed materials, invitations to special tours, or in other ways that we say thank you to our supporters. Individuals or organizations who give $10,000 or more during a calendar year qualify for membership in special giving circles. These members become part of something much larger than the gifts they have given and have the wonderful opportunity to experience an exclusive behind the scenes look at how HVCH is caring for our patients and community. Giving at this level and above is an excellent way to challenge others through a matching gift. No matter the size of your gift, your dollars will make a transformational difference in the lives of many. If you are considering making an impact in our community this year, I encourage you to consider Hocking Valley Community Hospital as a place to start your charitable giving. Please call our office at to learn how you can be part of something life changing today! Latricia Johnston Thanks to everyone who participated in our blood drive this week. Our collection goal was 20 units and we exceeded by collecting 21! Much appreciation to everyone who donated. Our next blood drive is scheduled for Aug. 28th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. VALENTINE o Feeling weak, light-headed, or faint; o Chest pain or discomfort; o Pain or discomfort in the arms or shoulder, and o Shortness of breath. PREVENT THE SPREAD OF GERMS AND INFECTIONS Wash your hands often, get a flu vaccine, and avoid close contact with someone that is sick. Prevent sexually transmitted diseases and unintended pregnancies. To lower your risk, abstain from sex or if you do choose to have sex, use protection. BE SAFE AND AVOID INJURY Be prepared for winter weather. Storms and cold temperatures can be dangerous for your health and safety. Plan ahead and prepare your home and car. Make sure your heating systems are working and that you have water and foods that don t need cooked or refrigerated in case of a power outage. Avoid distracted driving and get to your Valentine s Day plans safely. Distracted driving is driving while doing another activity that takes your attention away from driving. Distracted driving can increase the chance of a motor vehicle crash. OUR VISION To provide our community an unparalleled patient experience through world class service that is both compassionate and professional. February is Heart Health Month Info courtesy www. cdc.gov The perfect gift this Valentine s Day is the gift of heart health. Along with Valentine s Day, February marks American Heart Month, a great time to commit to a healthy lifestyle and make small changes that can lead to a lifetime of heart health. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women. While Americans of all backgrounds can be at risk for heart disease, African American men, especially those who live in the southeast region of the United States, are at the highest risk for heart disease. Additionally, more than 40 percent of African Americans have high blood pressure, a leading cause of heart disease and stroke. That's why this February during American Heart Month, Million Hearts is encouraging African American men to take charge of their health and start one new, heart-healthy behavior that can help reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke. Small Changes Can Make a Big Difference African American men can make a big difference in their heart health by taking these small steps during the month of February and beyond. Schedule a visit with your doctor to talk about heart health. It's important to schedule regular check-ups even if you think you are not sick. Partner with your doctor and health care team to set goals for improving your heart health, and don't be afraid to ask questions and trust their advice. Add exercise to your daily routine. Start off the month by walking 15 minutes, 3 times each week. By mid-month, increase your time to 30 minutes, 3 times each week. Increase healthy eating. Cook heart-healthy meals at home at least 3 times each week and make your favorite recipe lower sodium. For example, swap out salt for fresh or dried herbs and spices. Take steps to quit smoking. If you currently smoke, quitting can cut your risk for heart disease and stroke. Learn more at CDC's Smoking and Tobacco Use website. Take medication as prescribed. Talk with your doctor about the importance of high blood pressure and cholesterol medications. If you're having trouble taking your medicines on time or if you're having side effects, ask your doctor for help.
