1 THE BADGER BEAKER ISSUE 2 WISCONSIN STATE SOCIETY VOLUME 17 FALL/WINTER 2016 Councilor s Message GREAT LAKES FALL COUNCILLOR REPORT Our National Meeting in Memphis, Tennessee at the Peabody Hotel was a great meeting. We had a new format this year and it was very well received. We had a great attendance with over 400 in attendance. We are also truly pleased with our first time attendees, we truly hope you caught the fever and that we will see you next year. Thanks so much Diane Powell and the AMT Staff for all your great work to make this meeting a success. INSIDE THIS ISSUE President s Message Upcoming events Editor update Duties of State Officers Phlebotomy We would like to congratulate the award winners this year at the National Convention for the members of the Great Lakes District. All 3 bylaws were passed by the delegation We have a new slate of officers for our Board of Directors that are as follows: President Jeff Lavender, Vice President Jeannie Hobson, Secretary, Deborah Westervelt, Treasurer, Ken Hawker, Immediate Past President, Everett Bloodworth, Board members, Jerry Hudgins, Christopher Seay, Heather Herring, Naomi Melvin, Public member, Carole Aston,, Executive Councillor, Edna Anderson and Judiciary Councillor, Kimberly Cheuvront. National meeting for 2017 will be in Kansas City, Missouri, July 9-13, the 2018 meeting will be in the Eastern District. Please let us know if any new medical programs that start up in your area. Please join us for the Great Lakes Conference in Frankenmuth, Michigan, October 6-8, See your state website and register now. This will be my last Councillor Message to all of you. Thanks to everyone for their support and help during my tenure as District Councillor. Please continue to support your leaders in your state.

Since we can use conference calls and to conduct business, it s easier to be involved. This is your state society and I hope that we can keep our society and not lose our charter. The next meeting will be in Middleton, WI on Apr 4 th - 5th, This is Clara Boykin s last year as our councillor, she has been very dedicated and supportive. Acting president, Julie Lent, MT Editor s Note It s hard to believe that the year is almost over and that another holiday season is approaching. A donation will be given to the WI-ASCLS spring meeting in Middleton,WI on April 4-5, AMT members are given the membership rate to attend the meeting and enjoy the great educational meeting. Wisconsin AMT will be holding a business meeting. Hope you are able to take part in the program. Upcoming Events Spring ASCLS-WI State Convention April 4-5, 2017 with an AMT business meeting. 7 Phlebotomy Phlebotomy is the process of obtaining blood specimens by a procedure known as a venipuncture, finger stick, or heel stick. The phlebotomist assembles all needed equipment, has the patient sit in a chair in a safe and private setting Individuals performing phlebotomy are responsible for properly identifying the patient 2 identifiers are used such as full name and birthdate, drawing blood using aseptic procedures, using the correct tubes with the proper additives for the test requested, practicing standard and universal precautions, instructing the patient about the procedure and post puncture care, ordering tests per providers requisition or releasing orders already in the computer database, properly labeling tubes with the electronical printed label and delivering the specimens to the laboratory. After blood is drawn, pressure is applied to the site to stop bleeding and a Band-Aid is applied. For patients who faint, feel dizzy or nauseated during or after the phlebotomy, have them rest for a short time, offer juice or water, place a cool towel to forehead and/or back of neck, and notify the provider. Never leave the patient alone. If needed, call for assistants. The phlebotomist assembles all needed equipment, has patient sit in a chair in a safe and private setting, washes hands, prep the venipuncture site, applies the tourniquet, perform the venipuncture, and bandage the site. Special state certification in the United States is required in four states: California, Nevada, Washington, and Louisiana. A phlebotomist can become nationally certified through many different organizations including the American Medical Technologists (AMT).
