1 APRIL 2013 O N THE P ULSE E MPLOYEE N EWSLETTER FROM THE DESK OF OUR CEO Special Thanks To all the Clinic Administrators and everyone that collaborated as a JWCH On the Pulse Newsletter Reporter. Al Ballesteros Chief Executive Officer Andy Irie Chief Administrative Officer Carolina Espinoza Human Resources Associate Jeanne Lam Chief Finance Officer Tricia Waite Development Associate Daniela Espinoza Newsletter Editor WHEN OUR PATIENT'S ACQUIRE MEDICAL INSURANCE - WHAT WILL CAUSE THEM TO STAY WITH US? What will cause our patients to stay with JWCH when they acquire medical insurance coverage? Implementation of the Affordable Care Act or "Obama Care" will start January 1, 2014 in just eight months. In Los Angeles County alone, more than 1 million people will gain access to health insurance. These newly insured will have a choice to make: Stay with JWCH and the Wesley Health Centers or Choose a different Provider. What we do between now and 2014 is critical. To succeed as an organization, we have to Increase our Attractiveness to Patients. Our patients must have confidence in us and like our organization. We must maintain our patients and we need all JWCH and our Wesley Health Centers staff focused on making this happen. It is YOU, our Medical Providers, Mental Health Staff, nurses, medical assistants, front office receptionists, enrollment staff, support services teams, HIV staff and management that will retain our patients. Studies show that patients are satisfied with their medical provider based on key areas: 1) They must see JWCH and the Wesley Health Centers as Highly regarded Primary Care Providers. 2) Cleanliness of our Facilities is of the utmost importance. 3) They must be treated kindly and with respect. 4) Patients must feel they are involved in their medical decisions. JWCH Institute has a 53-year history as a trusted medical organization in Los Angeles County. We are not new to community health care nor in the communities do we serve. We have a long -standing history of service and that is why many of you choose to work here. You're here to make a difference in the lives of the homeless, those with complex mental health and health care needs, for the poor and uninsured. JWCH has a highly talented medical provider staff and dedicated nursing and back office staff. We provide care to children, adults, families, those with HIV/AIDS and the homeless. We have a team of medical providers ranging from internal medicine physicians, family physicians, pediatricians, HIV specialists, OB/GYNs, reproductive health care providers, mid-level family practice providers, psychiatrists and other medical and mental health staff. We are able and will meet the needs of the communities we serve now and well into the future. Customer service and patient satisfaction should be at the top of the list for all JWCH employees. When our patients arrive at our facilities, please continue to greet them with a smile. Continue to be attentive to their needs. Continue to do the best job you can to make their experience in our health centers pleasant. The Executive Staff is keenly focused on these issues. To this end, I would welcome any suggestions from staff on this topic. Please feel free to me Al Ballesteros, MBA President & Chief Executive Officer at Aballesteros@jwchinstitute.org 1

2 H o l i d a y Aw a r d s a n d D i n n e r On Friday, December 14, 2012, JWCH Institute Inc. held its Annual Holiday Awards Dinner. With over 400 employees and their guests attending, the event took place at the Luminarias Grand Ballroom. Upon arriving and checking in, everyone was greeted with Hors d oeuvre followed by a delicious pre-selected three course meal. After dinner, employees were recognized for their years of service. Employees who had 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 years of service were each given a certificate of appreciation and other gifts. A special plaque was given to Genevieve Cabrera for her 33 years of service and dedication to JWCH (left bottom second picture below). Genevieve Cabrera started as a Community Health Worker in 1979 and retired from the El Monte Family Planning Program as a Project Coordinator in The most anticipated moment of the night was when the winner of the 2012 Pink Diamond Award for quality was announced. The winner was carefully selected by the Board CQI committee based on quality indicators and other factors. This year s winner was our clinic located in the heart of skid row, the Center for Community Health (CCH). Clinic Administrators Paul Cha and Steve Flores accepted the award on behalf of the clinic. CCH is the current home to our providers Dr. Dennis Bleakly, Dr. Frank Ennes, Dr Christen Klasen, Dr Lucien Alexandre, and Patricia Talaro, PA-C. The evening s entertainment included a Michael Jackson impersonator named Carlo Riley. Mr. Riley danced to Michael Jackson s most famous hits, including Beat it, Bad, Remember the Time, Billie Jean, and Thriller. This was followed by a live performance from Velma Diaz from the Original Sonara Dinamit. She kept the staff entertained with her Latin rhythm. Much gratitude to Carolina Espinoza, Human Resources Associate and her dinner committee for all their hard work on the event. 2

5 TIME TO BINGO! YOUNG MEN S CONNECTION According to the Department of HIV and STD Programs of Los Angeles County (DHSP), the highest number of new HIV infections is in young men who have sex with men that are Latino or African American making JWCH s Young Men s Connection (YMC) one of our most important programs. Funded by Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in October 2010 for five years, The YMC is an intervention and prevention program focusing on sexual behavior and substance use in this demographic to help these young men make healthier choices. The Young Men s Connection invites year old men to get together once a week for five weeks in an interactive and engaging program. Facilitated by the larger than life personality of Percival Pandy and the YMC s newest member, Juan Preciado, the groups are meant to get these young men to really analyze their sexual behaviors, substance use, and individual risks and to develop skills to navigate the tough decisions that guys often face at this age. The Young Men s Connection aims to make a deep connection in the communities wherever the groups are held. One of the ways the YMC does this is through identifying individuals that show leadership in the groups and designating them as Peer Health Educators. Upon completion of the main program, these individuals are specially trained to facilitate portions of the program with future YMC groups and to carry the message into their community. If you know any young men who are years that you feel will be interested in participating in the Young Men s Connection, please contact Percival Pandy or Juan Preciado at (213) ext Follow us on and like us on 5

6 JWCH Institute, Inc. Doctor Appreciation Day Our CMO once said, life is too short to do something you don't love. More than the application of science and technology, medicine is a special calling, and those who have chosen this vocation to serve their fellow man understand the tremendous responsibility it entails. On March 30th, we recognized doctors throughout the nation for their tireless effort, dedication and contribution to caring for and improving the lives of others. We salute all of our JWCH Providers and our JWCH C h i e f M e d i c a l O f f i ce r P a u l G r e g e r s o n, M D M B A. 6
