Compassion fatigue, also known as Vicarious Trauma, is a condition characterized by a lessening of compassion over time. It is common in trauma victims and individuals that work in a helping profession. This program will give you and your staff the tools to succeed in this challenging health care environment. 1. Outline the cause and impact of compassion fatigue on individuals and the workplace. 2. Complete the Pro-Quol, Quality of Life Scale and determine how this score relates to compassion satisfaction, compassion fatigue and burnout. 3. Identify areas that impact work and life balance. 4. Create a blueprint for beginning a journey to wellness and wholeness. Speaker: Sharon McGloin, MSOD, MS, CTRS, President and Owner, Experiential Alternatives, Kansas City, Missouri. Sharon is also an Adjunct Professor at Avila University in Kansas City and teaches the undergraduate and graduate course on Leadership, as well as, Northwest Missouri State University where she teaches the Trends and Issues in Therapeutic Recreation class. Sharon holds a Master degree from the University of Missouri in Recreation and Park Administration with an emphasis in Therapeutic Recreation and is Nationally Certified as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. Sharon also holds a Masters in Organization Development Psychology from Avila University in Kansas City. Sharon is also a Certified Life Coach and has a small coaching practice helping individuals reimagine their lives. Sharon is a lifetime learner and enjoys being a catalyst for others growth and learning. Analyze the ROI and essential qualities of a successful onboarding process. 2. Identify benefits of new employee mentoring programs and characteristics of good mentors. 3. Prior to Angie owning her own company, she worked over 12 years in multiple leadership positions at Parc Provence (a leading memory care community in St. Louis). During that time she supervised, trained, and consulted care staff and families on person-directed memory care; facilitating the highest degree of functioning for its residents. Angie also championed the development of a multidisciplinary internship program for graduate program for graduate level social workers, gerontologists, and applied behavioral analysis interns from Washington University, St. Louis University, and University of Missouri-St. Louis. March 27 May 11 June 13 Dementia with Lewy Bodies and Other Common Dementias CE Approved: Nursing Home Administrators (5 patient care hours) Purpose: To help identify early symptoms, progression of disease and how care for someone will change as the disease progresses. Lewy Bodies, especially paired with Parkinson s, can be one of the most challenging types of dementia to care for. Residents may hide the disease effects for as long as possible but often by the time it is known, it is too late. We need to help those with the disease to still have dignity, be respected, maintain independence, and live their best life possible. 1. Analyze the key differences between Alzheimer s and other common dementias with focus on Lewy Bodies. 2. Discuss the behaviors and functions and how to build their care around each. 3. Identify how to help everyone involved understand their role in care and management of the disease. Speaker: Angela Haas, BA, CDP, CDS, Dementia Care Consultant, St. Louis, Missouri. Angela has been involved with the elderly since childhood; starting with residential and nursing homes that her family owned and operated. She also brings a unique perspective to dementia care due to a personal experience with TBI dementia which stemmed from a car accident in She works with local nursing homes, home care companies, and individuals to help educate on true person-centered care and using creative techniques when someone progresses in their disease and behaviors or abilities change. Angela is dedicated to help communities fight for everyone with the disease to live their best life possible. 3 Exploring the Fundamental Building Blocks Used to Create Successful Care Teams Purpose: In work done in the National Learning Collaborative, using the MDS as the search engine for person-centered care sponsored by the Pioneer Network and developed by culture change experts Barbara Frank and Cathie Brady, four relational coordination practices were identified as keys to growing your care team; supporting resident choice, and implementing person-centered practices. Whether you are working to meet the new conditions of participation or merely looking for tools to help grow your care team, these practices are the foundation that will help you reach your goals. 1. Identify the four relational coordination practices. 2. Demonstrate how to use the relational coordination practices in the implementation of person-centered practices. 3. Demonstrate how to use the relational coordination practices to strengthen your QAPI or other performance improvement efforts. Speaker: Joan Devine, Director of Education, Pioneer Network and Owner/Operator, JPDevine Consulting, St. Louis, Missouri. Joan is a Registered Nurse and former activity professional that has over 30 years of experience in health care. Joan has served in leadership positions in both long-term and acute care. Joan is an advocate for the long-term care culture change movement and a certified Eden Educator and Mentor. She actively participates in culture change activities, preparing and equipping administrator s and other senior care leaders to implement person directed practices and transform the culture of their homes. She serves on the board of MC5 (Missouri Coalition Celebrating Care, Continuum, Change), and is the author of the book, Word of the Week: Creating a Culture Change Dictionary. I gotta go see a man about a horse. 1. Discuss the fear people with dementia have with bathing. 2. Explore habits of a lifetime and how to incorporate into the bathing process. 3. Obtain many practical solutions that will reduce the stress of bathing. 4. Decrease incontinence by creating wayfinding clues to the bathroom and using familiar terminology. Session 3: Memory Enhanced Activities (1.5 patient care hours) Purpose: When trying to figure out what works and doesn t work, their face is your teacher. Every person is unique so there can be no rules when figuring out how to tap into the person s identity. Avoid playing out in your head whether something will work or not. Try anything and everything, and the experience will teach you. Remember they usually do not understand the words coming out of your mouth, but they are more likely to understand what they see, touch, smell and hear. So put stuff back in their hands and see if it triggers a response. It s not about the big things we do; you ll see that it s about the simple pleasures, example: a smile. Whenever anyone finds something that causes a positive reaction tell everyone. So we ALL can create a better day. 1. Discover the treasures in each individual and how to incorporate these treasures into a memory enhanced program. 2. Figure out the person s development level and understand what abilities the person has left, then simplify, until there is success. 3. Recognize when they do something that causes a positive reaction. 4. Realize when the person with dementia gets a better day, they too, get a better day. Speaker: Jolene Brackey, BA, Owner, Enhanced Moments, Polson, Montana. Founder of Enhanced Moments and author of the book, Creating Moments of Joy. Jolene Brackey is a celebrated nationwide speaker in Alzheimer s education. She has a B.A. from Iowa State University and extensive experience with people who have Alzheimer s. Jolene has been a keynote speaker at many conferences where family members, CNAs, and professionals share what works and doesn t work. Therefore; the greatest education is being with and having loved someone with Alzheimer s. A vision that we will soon look beyond the challenges of Alzheimer s disease and focus more of our energy of creating moments of joy. When the person has shortterm memory loss their life is made up of moments. We cannot create a perfectly wonderful day, but it is absolutely attainable to create a perfectly wonderful moment. When we go where the person is living in their mind, we will create smiles by triggering memories that are engrained in them. Focusing on the abilities they have left instead of their losses may have the possibility of reviving their spirit and ours. Five minutes later, they won t remember what you did or said, but the feeling you left them with will linger. As will the feeling the speaker leaves the audience as they laugh, cry and are inspired to create moments of joy. 1. Identify the losses that people with dementia experience as the brain dies and how we can assist in compensating for these losses. 2. Share many practical verbal and nonverbal communication skills which help the person feel heard and supported. 3. Analyze how to creatively and effectively turn challenging situations into moments of joy. Session 2: It s Saturday Night! (1.5 patient care hours) Purpose: People with dementia have genuine, valid reasons for disliking the bathing process, we will explore those fears and hesitations together. We will then brainstorm in search of a new understanding, and uncover ways to approach the bathing process to make it a better experience. Answering the questions of when, where, and how the person has always taken a bath will help offer more familiarity during the bathing process. Lastly, the audience will Leading and Supervising: Two Ways of Thinking? Purpose: Being a leader and being a supervisor take a different set of skills and tools, or do they? Trust, communication, and mastering the art of tough conversations are certainly a part of both leadership and supervision. This program will explore skills and tools that lend themselves to effective leadership and supervision. You will walk away with techniques to try the moment you return to the work setting. 1. Name three ways to build trust with employees. 2. Learn two effective communication techniques and the impact they have. 3. Outline the steps in having a successful, tough, workplace conversation. 4 Opening Your Hearts and Minds to a New Culture of Aging CE Approved: Nursing Home Administrators (5 patient care hours) Purpose: Loneliness, helplessness, and boredom are the plaques that Elders face, whether they are living in a traditional institutional setting or even in their own home. Join Joan Devine, Certified Eden Educator and Mentor, as together you explore how to lead your team in opening their hearts and minds to a new culture of aging, one which is resident directed and embraces the principles of the Eden Alternative. 1. Discuss the 10 principles that guide The Eden Alternative. 2. Demonstrate hands on techniques and exercises that can be conducted with their care team in order to understand practices that can be implemented supporting the Eden Principles. 3. Develop an action plan to support further growth of a culture supporting person directed care both personally and for their care teams. Dr. Glenna Burton has worked with patients daily, individually as well as within groups, for both inpatient and outpatient settings. She taught more than 15 years at the University of Missouri in Columbia, in addition to having a private practice in psychiatry for decades. She has received awards and recognition for her achievements in psychiatry. Dr. Glenna Burton received teaching awards from psychiatry residents and medical students. She received the Laughlin Fellowship Award, and was also selected as one of the top 10 residents in psychiatry in North America during her residency.
