2 Rules of Engagement Introductions and rules of engagement were reviewed by All materials for the 2013 Nursing Strategic Planning Retreat are located on the Nursing Leadership SharePoint at the following link: 2013 Retreat Materials Goals for the Day Mission Vision Values and Professional Practice Model Assessment and Evaluation Strategic Plan Review Mission, Vision, Values Review Accomplishments Engaging Nurse Leadership in Accountable Care Cultural Transformation Identify key methods for Nursing Council work redesign to position us for the future Magnet Site Visit Preparation, Sustainment and 2014 Moving Forward Plan Group discussed correlation between SMH Mission/Vision/Values and UPMC System Mission/Vision/Values. Mary demonstrated how our Mission/Vision/Value are unique to SMH but still align with corporate. Reviewed the synergy between Mission/Vision/Values and RBC. Discussion related to maintaining RBC as the Professional Practice Model to support the strategic plan. Strategic Plans should be based on the Magnet components. Mary Posted on SharePoint Unanimous decision to continue using RBC as the most appropriate professional practice model that supports nursing and patient care. Elaine Panza will set up meetings with Unit Directors and Mary to review unit
3 Barkhymer reviewed PowerPoint based strategic plans. presentation which is available on SharePoint. Unit Based Strategic plans should align with overarching hospital strategic plan. Mary used 5B Unit s strategic plan as an example. Start plan in January, keep unit based strategic plan simple with 4 goals, and most importantly, share with your staff. Make your plans usable for your staff and for yourself. Now is the time to step back and assess your unit how far you have come and where you want to go System Dashboards Accomplishments this Year Quality Update Veronica Findley reviewed 2013 System Priorities Dashboard spreadsheet in detail. reviewed 2013 Major Accomplishments. List of accomplishments by Magnet Component are outlined in the PowerPoint presentation. Ronnie Findley presented Engaging Nurse Leadership in Accountable Care Ronnie reviewed current health care statistics and how the healthcare environment is changing. Ronnie reviewed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act: Goal is improve quality of care. Value based purchasing is part of the PPACA System Priorities Dashboard Spreadsheet is Posted on SharePoint PowerPoint Presentation is Posted on SharePoint SharePoint in its entirety for review Ronnie offered to speak to units/departments to answer questions relating to Value Based Purchasing.
4 The Field Guide to Medicare Payment Innovation handout was distributed as a reference. Ronnie reviewed each slide from her presentation in detail:. Quality Strategic Objectives Ronnie distributed handouts regarding Perfecting the patient care services strategic plan 13 key nursing objectives. System Wide Goals for FY14 Reviewed Strategic Objectives Aligned from national to Systemwide to hospital objectives Strategic Objectives commented that this slide is very important to share with staff and are useful talking points when speaking with Magnet appraisers. Impact of nursing care on outcomes Interdisciplinary Communication The importance of communication and the financial impact of inefficient communication Kotter s Change Model There are eight steps for change. Quality and safety tools On UPMC Infonet, there are many tools and resources.

Magnet Update Lisa Lehman Lisa Lehman reviewed Magnet appraisal process and responsibilities for site visit preparation. Coordination and preparation for each session were assigned as follows: Photos and bios of Escorts: Lisa Nicholas will request and collect bios and coordinate photos of escorts. First Meeting: CNO and Magnet Program Director - and Lisa Lehman Second Meeting: Executive Team Third Meeting: Nurse Executive Council All Nurse Execs SharePoint in its entirety for review.

Let know as soon as possible if break or lounge areas on units are in need of repairs. Begin to clean your areas. Create unit-specific bulletin board in your area. Lisa Lehman requested that Unit Directors and Council Chairs and Cochairs invite her to a meeting for review, questions and preparation.
