But February is full of other holidays that give us cause for celebration. February 2nd is Ground Hog Day, and on this day we anxiously await Punxsutawney Phil s determination of whether or not winter will continue for an additional six weeks or if spring will arrive ear- February 15th National Gum Drop February 28th National Tooth Fairy Day Day February 20th Cherry Pie Day

2 Family Council Ground Hog s Day Tradition The celebration of Ground Hog s Day began as a Pennsylvania German custom in southeastern Pennsylvania. The first written reference mentioning Ground Hog s Day was made in a 1841 diary entry by James Morris, a store keeper from Morgantown, Pennsylvania. Organizers for Ground Hog s Day festivities report the accuracy of the ground hog s annual weather predictions range between %. H o w e v e r, meteorologists report only a 39% accuracy of the ground hog s weather predictions. The Thoughtful Sentiments Stationary Gift Basket is on display at the Front Nurse s Station. 4 Resident s Corner New to this month s edition of the Lions Center Chatter is the Resident s Corner. Each month a resident of the Lions Center will be featured in the Resident s Corner. The Lion s Center is pleased to feature Mr. Dick Moyer in this inaugural edition. It was my pleasure to recently visit with Mr. Richard Moyer, or Dick as he prefers to be known. I thoroughly enjoyed our visit and was intrigued with the many remembrances that Dick shared with me. Dick was born and raised in Cumberland, and with a few short exceptions, lived his entire life in Cumberland. Dick, and his wife of 54 years, Norma, raised their three sons in Allegany County. A graduate of Allegany High School, Dick relates that the cross town rivalry that currently exists between Allegany and Fort Hill high schools dates back to his school days. Music is an important part of Dick s life, having played the baritone, trombone, trumpet and bass horn. During our visit, Dick recalled getting home from school, grabbing his baritone and heading to Mr. Stewart s music school on Green Street for lessons. As a member of the Allegany High School band, Dick marched in parades in Philadelphia, Washington D.C, and Hagerstown. He shared that the trombone players marched at the front of high school bands during parades so that the players didn t risk hitting fellow band members with their trombone slides. Today, Dick s oldest son Steve is a music teacher, perhaps as a result of Dick s intense interest in music. Dick relates that, from the time he was young, he never experienced much idle time. As a youngster Dick worked various part time jobs after the end of the school day. Dick worked at two local drug stores in Cumberland after school, performing various functions including running the old fashioned soda fountain. He also served as an usher at the Garden Theater in Cumberland. At that point in time, movie goers were treated to an elongated cartoon, a news reel and then the feature movie...all for 35 cents. As an adult, Dick worked for the United States Postal Service, retiring after 28 years. Dick recalls the time when a postage stamp was 8 cents. Dick confesses that he and his wife Norma were high school sweethearts and that they met at a dance at the old YMCA in Cumberland. Dick shared that he enjoyed slow dancing very much. However, he didn t care much for dances like the Jitterbug when they came along, noting that if he was going to dance he didn t want his dance partner 6-8 feet away from him!

5 Resident Birthdays In February Marian Geatz Carolyn Amick Carol Allen Trecia Hamons Dorothy Miller Mildred Kline Marilyn Kelso Staff Birthdays Lisa Gover Nancy Lough Lynda Keith Mildred Butler Troy Raines Nancy Bowers In Febraury Clorissa Floyd Betsy Schwenninger Bessie Magruder Betty Smith Terry Barnes Megan Sgaggero Staff Spotlight The Lions Center is fortunate to have a staff that is dedicated to providing the best care possible to the residents of the center. Amazingly, 41% of the 134 individuals employed at the Lions Center have 10 or more years of service with the facility, and 14 staff members have been employed at the Lions Center for 30+ years. Each month we will be featuring one staff member who has contributed years of service the to center and its residents. This month we feature Kathy Cook of Dietary. Kathy Cook has been employed with Lions Center for 35 1/2 years. When Kathy first began work with the Lions Center she served as a nursing assistant, and recalls being paid $2.00 per hour. At that point in time, the skills to be a nursing assistant were learned through on the job training, as opposed to the formal training and certification requirements that are in place today. Kathy shared that she was hired over the telephone, without ever having met the Director of Nursing, who she eventually met on her first day of work. After serving as a nursing assistant for 14 years, she transferred into the dietary department where she continues to work today. Kathy was born and raised here in the Cumberland area and graduated from Fort Hill High School. She loves horses and dogs, and enjoys crocheting, a skill she learned from a dietary department colleague. Kathy views the staff and residents of the Lions Center as family, commenting that she has always enjoyed doing for other people.

6 February Is American Heart Month February is a month dedicated to matters of the heart and not just Valentine s Day sentiments. February is also American Heart Month, and time to show yourself and those you care some heart felt concern.literally. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death and disability in the United States, costing the US economy over $300 billion dollars each year, including the cost of health care services, medications, and lost productivity. While factors beyond our control, like race and heredity, influence our likelihood of facing cardiovascular disease related health issues, many of the risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease can be managed through the life style choices we make everyday. What can you do to reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease related health issues? First and foremost see your health care provider at least once a year even if you feel healthy. They can monitor you for symptoms of cardiovascular disease that often go undetected like having high blood pressure or elevated cholesterol. Secondly, eat a healthy diet that includes plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables at least 5 servings a day. Focus your food choices on those foods low in saturated and trans fats and cholesterol, and those foods that are high in fiber. Thirdly, maintain a healthy weight and exercise regularly. Fourth Don t smoke or use smokeless tobacco and limit alcohol use. The negative health impact from tobacco use is well documented, and consumption of excessive alcohol can raise blood pressure to unhealthy levels. Fifth if you have diabetes, manage your blood sugar. And finally, take your medicine as prescribed by your health care provider. The moral of the story is, that even when our genes predispose us to an increased risk of developing cardiovascular health issues, choices we make about how we live our lives can minimize our risk of actually developing health issues that can negatively impact the quality, and longevity of our lives. Check Your Heart Health Knowledge 1. What is considered to be an acceptable total cholesterol number? 2. There are two types of cholesterol what are they? 3. Which one of the two types of cholesterol is the good cholesterol? 4. Name 3 symptoms of high cholesterol. 5. What is considered a normal blood pressure? 6. True or False there are clear symptoms that signal one has high blood pressure. (answers on page 8) Lions Center places a calendar in each resident s room at the beginning of each year. These calendars are used to keep track of resident appointments. If you or a family member is discharged from Lions Center, please remember to leave the calendar supplied by the Lions Center in the room for use throughout the remainder of the year. THANK YOU!
