LGE is an innovative and effective programme that helps young people who are gang-affected or gang-affiliated to exit that lifestyle. Working with Redthread s hospital-based Youth Violence Intervention Programme provides a unique opportunity to engage with young people at the teachable moment when they are ready to make changes. We are looking for an outstanding individual with proven ability to work with high risk, vulnerable young people, with a strong knowledge of young people and health, and the ability to form effective working relationships with a wide range of partners and agencies. 2 About London Gang Exit London Gang Exit is a partnership between Safer London, Redthread and Only Connect. LGE reduces offending, supports individuals to access safe, stable housing and encourages young people back into employment, education or training. LGE provides support to anyone aged who is gang-involved or gang-affiliated to help them exit, no matter which borough of London they live in. It includes those who are at risk from gangs and those who pose a risk of harm to others, recognising the complexities of gang involvement and the blurring of lines between offender and victim. All work delivered through the London Gang Exit service is tailored to the specific needs of young people. This includes mental health support, employment support, and specialised support for young women, for example counselling following sexual exploitation. Young people are allocated a trained caseworker to provide intensive support, advocate on their behalf and build an effective and consistent relationship with them over an extended period of time. Young people are empowered to move away from gang lifestyles by being given support to exit, opportunities to develop new skills, and providing the opportunity for social reintegration into the community through support, guidance and practical help. About Redthread Redthread empowers young people to thrive as they navigate the challenging transition to adulthood by integrating trauma-informed youth work into the health sector. Whether a young person has been the victim of a stabbing, is seeking support for anxiety, has suffered a sexual assault, or wants to find a new home beyond the reach of a gang, we support them to overcome the challenges they face through our dynamic youth work programmes at The Well Centre in Streatham and in our hospital-based violence intervention work. Every year thousands of young people find themselves in hospital A&E departments as the victim of serious youth violence. Redthread s Youth Violence Intervention Programme (YVIP) embeds youth workers in hospitals to intervene with these young people. The teams meet the young patients as soon as they can: in the A&E waiting room, on the ward, or even in the resuscitation bay. We believe that this moment of intense crisis, when the young person is nursing a serious injury in the daunting environment of a busy hospital, often alone, can be a catalyst for pursuing positive change a teachable moment. Our teams build rapport with the young people, mentor and advise them, and support them to make long-term positive plans to break away from cycles of violence and offending. Redthread capitalise on our partnerships to ensure long-term work and change is possible for each young person. The teams make welljudged referrals on their behalf, and accompany them to initial meetings to ensure transition is smooth. This work disrupts the cycle that can too easily lead to devastated communities and an exhausted healthcare and justice system.
3 Major Trauma Centre Link Worker Application Pack Post Title: Work area: Major Trauma Centre Link Worker London Gang Exit Responsible to: day to day line-management by Safer London, and supervised within Redthread by the London YVIP Manager Salary: Locations: Contract: 26,000 to 28,000 depending on qualifications and experience This post will work out of Safer London s office at Westminster Bridge Road and in St George s Hospital, St Mary s Hospital, King s College Hospital and the Royal London Hospital on a regular basis. 12 months fixed-term contract Hours of work: 37.5 hours per week. The nature of Redthread and LGE s work means that some evening and weekend working is required. Closing date: 10am, Monday 12 March Interviews: Youth panel interviews will be held early evening on Tuesday 20 March Main interviews will be held during the day on Tuesday 27 March About this role The Major Trauma Centre Link Worker will be seconded into Safer London to work as part of the London Gang Exit team. They will work closely with Redthread YVIP youth workers to identify young people who are attending Emergency Departments because of violence or exploitation and who are gang-involved or gang-affiliated. The MTC Link Worker will be the lead worker for these trauma centre cases and will coordinate engagement with other relevant specialists from across the LGE team. They will hold a caseload of up to 15 clients. The majority of the role will require direct work with referred clients on a one-to-one basis. The worker will develop and support relationships with partner agencies and third sector organisations across a number of key London boroughs ensuring effective case communication and management. This post is required to ensure that effective outcome data is collated, monitored, is SMART and input in line with organisational processes and procedures. The role is also required to demonstrate a clear understanding of safeguarding.
4 Job Description Purpose of the Post Be part of the LGE team, providing transformational and trauma-informed support to young people who are gang-affected or gang-affiliated, holding a caseload of up to 15 young people. Be the lead worker for LGE cases identified through attendance at the Emergency Departments of the Major Trauma Centres, working with Redthread s YVIP teams. Be part of the team at Redthread, contributing to the development of our programmes and assisting with other projects and activities as required. Main Duties and Responsibilities 1. Hold a caseload of up to 15 clients, providing consistent and empowering support to young people who are gang-affected or gang-affiliated, enabling them to exit. To include undertaking appropriate needs, health and risk assessments, working with the young person and other professionals to put effective support plans in place, reviewing strategies regularly, monitoring outcomes and providing ongoing person-centred support. 2. Act as the lead worker for eligible young people identified through Redthread s YVIP in the Major Trauma Centre hospitals, building good working relationships with the teams to enable effective and timely referrals. 3. Adopt a range of approaches when working with individuals in order to improve wellbeing and where relevant any offending and gang related issues through solution-focused approaches and evidence-based practice, strength-based approaches to improve coping capacity and resilience, and one-to-one outreach work 4. Play a key role in ongoing risk assessment and risk management and effectively communicate concerns/issues to the Metropolitan Police, CRC or local authority, attending any risk management meetings as required. 5. Coordinate engagement with other relevant specialists from the LGE team to provide tailored support to each young person, ensuring their needs are met. 6. Support the service user to explore issues on their rights, risks, safety, relationships, values, attitudes, conflict negotiation, positive choices, self-esteem and aspirations.

Maintain accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date information/case records, and share information as appropriate, ensuring all monitoring, evaluation and case recording requirements are delivered in an accurate and timely way 8. Maintain partnership working with the referring partners and key stakeholders and proactively implement effective and timely communication, internally and with partners. 9. Advocate on behalf of the young person, ensuring the safety and well-being of the young person remains central at all times. 10. Make appropriate onward referrals, signposting young people to support services with partner agencies and positive activities where appropriate, and identifying creative solutions to any barriers that may arise. 11. Support the delivery (where applicable) of training, events, workshops and seminars to professionals to raise awareness and develop the capacity of partners to identify gang involved/affected young people. 12. Work creatively with colleagues to generate project resources and materials as required, supporting both the development of the service and wider Redthread programmes. 13. Actively participate in staff meetings, session evaluations, supervision/reviews and planning sessions and in Redthread s overall development, including input on the needs of young people, ideas for new projects, and the on-going development of existing projects. 14. Assist where possible with general fundraising events and fundraising, including the maintenance and growth of the regular supporter network, and to assist in promoting the organisation s work with young people to the wider community. 15. Assist in maintaining good working relations with Redthread s stakeholders, project partners and with other agencies and represent Redthread at external meetings as required. 16. Encourage and enable young people to participate in all forms of decision-making and management of Redthread s projects, with the ultimate aim of empowering them to shape the services and activities provided for them. To ensure that all young people have equality of access and that the programme promotes opportunities for all young people.
6 17. Assist the team in ensuring that all Redthread policies and procedures are followed, including Health and Safety, Safeguarding, Data Protection and Equal Opportunities. Report any concerns to an appropriate member of the SMT. 18. Work as a member of the Redthread team and assist as required across all the organisation s projects, including carrying out any other duties that may be required to meet the needs of the organisation.
7 Person Specification Essential Experience A minimum of 3 years professional experience of working with young people in a range of activities and settings Experience of working with projects that seek to address the issue of gang membership, youth offending, knife crime, etc Experience of partnership working with a wide range of agencies across London Experience of working as an effective team member Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team Knowledge A thorough knowledge and understanding of the physical, social and emotional developmental needs of young people Understanding of the issues faced by young people living in inner city and rural areas Strong knowledge of child protection and safeguarding issues and of current best practice within the youth work and statutory sectors Knowledge of best practice in case recording Knowledge of health issues and young people Skills Able to oversee cases using an electronic database Well-developed communication skills and an ability to interact with both young people and adults on a one to one basis and in small groups, within a range of contexts Resilient and reflective Ability to plan and manage own workload Accurate data entry and record keeping and monitoring processes Ability to use up to date IT systems Qualifications A degree-level qualification in youth work or a related field Desirable Working with people impacted by violence, trauma or tragedy The Ambit model, solution-focused brief therapy or a similar counselling methodology Experience of working within a health setting Working on Macbased IT systems Professional skills Self-motivated and committed to personal development Flexible and committed Effective time management skills and an ability to prioritise tasks and work flexibly to deadlines A commitment to and understanding of equal opportunities issues as they apply to all aspects of Redthread s work Safeguarding Redthread puts safeguarding at the forefront of all its activities.
