Patients treated in these facilities are not required to be admitted to the hospital and usually are well enough to leave after the procedure. 7 DURABLE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT (DME) Durable medical equipment is any medical equipment used in the home to assist in the improvement of the patient s quality of living. The home builds community support and care coordination with a team approach among the individual s caregivers (the patient, his/her healthcare providers, family members, etc.). 17 REHABILITATIVE SERVICES These are services designed to facilitate the process of recovery from injury, illness, or disease and restore various physical functioning to as normal as possible. Rehabilitation services assist the patient to compensate for deficits that cannot be treated medically. Some of these services include physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. Other types of therapists, such as inhalation, audiologists, and dietitians may also be part of the professional team as needed. While some therapists do make home visits, most of these services take place in various health care facilities, such as hospitals, clinical office practices, skill-care nursing homes, and sport medicine clinics. 18 SKILLED NURSING HOMES These are living facilities for seniors with health services provided by a team of health professionals under the supervision and oversight of a Medical Director. The clinical team includes medical doctors, licensed practical, vocational, and skilled and registered nurses, as well as rehabilitative staff, to manage, provide, observe, and evaluate care. Unlike a nursing home, a skilled nursing home must be certified by the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid, which pay for these services. 19 SPECIALTY MEDICAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITY SERVICES These are services provided to those living with medical or developmental disabilities which could be severe, chronic ailments caused by mental or physical impairments. The goal of these specialty services is to achieve optimal physical, mental, and social health for the patients through treatment and support. For children and adolescents, these services address needs such as self-care, language, learning mobility, and self-direction. For adults, the services assist with their independent living and economic selfsufficiency. Case management, early intervention, comprehensive medical and neurological evaluations, psychological services and therapy, substance abuse counseling, workshops, job trainings, and educational programs are some of the examples of these services. 20 URGENT CARE CENTERS Urgent Care centers are set up to assist patients with the provision of immediate outpatient medical services for the treatment of acute or chronic illnesses or injuries that are not life-threatening but also cannot wait until the next day or for the primary care physician to see them. Visiting an urgent care center is a convenient and economical option if care is needed outside of the doctor s regular office hours, and if use appropriately, can be a good alternative to waiting for hours in a hospital emergency room. Some common treatments provided by urgent care centers include office-based laboratory tests, diabetes management, symptoms of the common colds/flu, and common infections (conjunctivitis (pink-eye), streptococcus (throat), urinary tract, etc.).
