Numerous studies have indicated that breastfed infants tend to experience fewer illnesses, are less likely to develop allergies, and have a lower incidence of diabetes than their bottle-fed counterparts. Besides the health benefits provided to a newborn, breastfeeding is less expensive, and often more convenient, than bottlefeeding. Most new mothers, however, have many questions or even doubts about breastfeeding. The Lactation Service offers women an encouraging, supportive, informative environment in which to learn more about the pros and cons of breastfeeding. The Center is staffed by certified lactation consultants and educators who are available to offer advice, counseling and training in all aspects of breastfeeding. Breastfeeding Support/Lactation Service: Hosts an ongoing support group for breastfeeding mothers and their infants. Here, under the supervision of a lactation specialist, mothers meet to share encouragement and support for their decision to breastfeed. Any breastfeeding mother and her infant may attend these no-cost meetings, provided both are free of communicable illnesses (i.e. cold, flu, cough, etc.). Our lactation consultants can provide advice on nutrition, breast pumps, weaning and various other breastfeeding issues. Breastfeeding Accessories: For a variety of reasons, some women experience difficulties when breastfeeding. For these women, breast pumps and other breastfeeding accessories can ease the discomfort or complications that result from inadequate milk supply, engorged or infected breasts, flat or sore nipples, or other special circumstances. The Linacia Pharmacy stocks a large supply of breast pumps, such adapter kits, breast cups, nursing pads, and other accessories that can help improve the breastfeeding experience for both mother and baby. 7 TIPS FOR EXPECTANT PARENTS TIPS FOR EXPECTANT PARENTS Tips For Expectant Parents Dear Parents, We are happy you have chosen Dameron Hospital for the birth of your baby. We believe you will have a very satisfying experience with us, and we want to help guide you through the birth of your child by preparing you for your hospital stay. For many women and their families, childbirth is the first time they have been in a hospital. The information in this packet helps explain what happens during the birth of your baby and your stay with us. All language translation and Teletype for the Deaf (TDY) services are available. Thank you for sharing this special time with us, we hope you will feel comfortable and at ease. Pre-admission and Admission Some insurance companies require authorization before being admitted for delivery, please check with your insurance company prior to admission. You will be asked to show your insurance or Medi-Cal card upon admission, we accept most insurance plans. Your physician will give you specific instructions about notifying him/her and coming to the hospital once labor begins. At that time you should not have anything more to eat. Ice chips and clear liquids are allowed. If your water breaks, come directly to the hospital. If you arrive between 6:00 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. go to the Information Desk in the Main Lobby, they will direct you to Admissions. If onset of labor occurs between 8:30 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., enter the hospital through the Emergency Department on Harrison Street and inform the Emergency Admissions that you may be in labor. Pre- admission is not necessary and upon arriving at the hospital for delivery you will be asked your last name, maiden name and birth date. If you are in active labor, you will be taken directly to Labor and Delivery, and your husband or support person will need to provide the necessary admission information. Outpatient Procedures During pregnancy your physician may request you to come to the hospital as an outpatient for tests. Common outpatient tests include: Non-Stress Test Ultrasound Biophysical Profile Amniocentesis These tests are used to determine the health and well being of your unborn child. Explanations about the tests are available from your doctor or the hospital staff

TIPS FOR EXPECTANT PARENTS TIPS FOR EXPECTANT PARENTS Tests, which take place in the antepartum room in the Labor and Delivery area, are scheduled in advance. They are performed by a Registered Nurse (RN) with special certification and experience. She will send the data to your doctor. Upon entering the hospital for testing please register at the Information Desk in the Main Lobby. From there you will be escorted to the Maternity Department on the Third Floor. What To Bring To The Hospital After delivery, Dameron Hospital will give you supplies needed in the hospital including soap, shampoo, conditioner, tooth brush, toothpaste, lotion, shower cap and sanitary supplies. Please bring the following items: 1. Toiletries; such as comb, brush, etc. 2. Gowns, robes, slippers and underwear 3. Baby s and mother s going home clothes, loose and comfortable 4. Items needed for labor as suggested during prenatal classes You DO NOT Need to Bring 1. Medications: The hospital will supply whatever is needed. If you forget to leave your medicines at home, please send them home with a family member. 2. We cannot accept responsibility for personal belongings left at your bedside while you are out of the room such as jewelry or credit cards. 3. Electronic technology / devices, eg. camera, ipad, tablets are your resposibility. Dameron Hospital offers free WiFi service. Labor & Delivery When you are admitted to Dameron Hospital, you will be in a private Labor/Delivery/Recovery (LDR) room. Each room has a color television, telephone and bathroom. You will remain in this room until the baby is born. We want your baby s birth to be a happy family occasion providing an excellent start in life. We encourage you to have the baby s father or a support person with you during Labor and Delivery. Please limit support persons to four. When in Labor and Delivery, the nurse will take your temperature and blood pressure and obtain a urine sample. She will ask about the following: 1. The beginning of your labor 2. If and when your water broke 3. Any medications you may have taken during pregnancy 4. Any problems with this or previous pregnancies 5. Past medical or surgical history 6. Your plan to breast or bottle feed the baby 7. The baby s doctor (Pediatrician) It is important to have a physician for the baby. You may want to visit this doctor sometime before delivery to discuss baby care. A fetal monitor will be applied to check how the baby is responding to your contractions. Ordinarily, the nurse who admits you will be with you during Labor and Delivery. If she is unable to continue, another nurse will be assigned to you. You and your physician should have discussed his usual routine for Labor and Delivery (enemas, IVs and medication) and any questions you have. If questions arise during delivery please ask the staff. Our goal is to make your stay as pleasant and rewarding as possible

TIPS FOR EXPECTANT PARENTS TIPS FOR EXPECTANT PARENTS Pain Control (ANALGESIA) The following are options for treatment of labor pain: 1. Prepared Childbirth Classes teaches behavioral and relaxation techniques to ease the stress and pain of labor. 2. IV/IM Pain Medication may be injected into a muscle or vein. 3. Epidural Anesthesia is the injection of pain relieving spinal medication. We encourage all mothers to complete a Prepared Childbirth Class. Prior to delivery you should discuss the various methods of analgesia with your doctor. If it becomes necessary to have a cesarean delivery, the nurse will start an IV, and insert a catheter into your bladder to drain your urine. The surgery is performed in a surgical suite located in the Labor and Delivery unit by the same staff that cared for you during the cesarean delivery. Your support person is welcome to be your companion. After your baby is born a nurse checks all its vital signs to be sure everything is within normal limits. An identification band with a one-of-a-kind I.D. number is placed on the opposite extremities of your newborn. Mother is also banded along with the baby s father or whomever she designates. next an electronic sensor is applied to your baby s ambilical cord. The baby is then weighed, measured and given required medications (Vitamin K injection and Antibiotic Eye Ointment). We also offer your baby its first immunization (Hepatitis B Vaccine). If you and your baby are both stable after delivery you will recover together in the room you labored and delivered in. During this time we would like to introduce you to the SOFT Concept. Our goal is to have the baby skin to skin with the mother or fathe immediately. S = Skin to Skin O = Open Eyes F = Fingertip Touch T = Time During this time nurses will continue to monitor your bleeding and vital signs, as well as the baby s temperature, heart rate, and breathing rate. This is a good time to try breastfeeding if you plan to use this method, or just enjoy this new person in your life. If for any reason your baby s condition is in question, he or she will be taken for observation and additional care. About one to two hours after delivery when you and the baby will be moved to an assigned room on the Mother-Baby Unit, the baby s father or support person shall accompany you and your baby while getting settled. If you have a scheduled cesarean delivery you will be contacted by the hospital and scheduled for a cesarean section pre-op class. Most babies delivered by cesarean section are delivered within in 5 minutes of the start of surgery but it takes about 40 minutes to complete the surgery. Dads who attend cesarean delivery should take a shower or bath with non fragrance soap and wear a button down front shirt. During the completion of the recovery phase the dad will hold the baby Skin to Skin (SOFT) until mom is able to hold the baby Skin to Skin. Once recovery is completed both mom and baby along with dad will be relocated to the mother s room on the Mother-Baby Unit 14 15

TIPS FOR EXPECTANT PARENTS TIPS FOR EXPECTANT PARENTS Privacy For many new parents, birth is an intensely personal and intimate experience, and they want as much privacy as possible. Others like to receive a lot of attention and care from our nursing staff. We are here to help you as much or as little as you want, but we need you to tell us what you expect. If things aren t going the way you would like, please let us know. If you want to be alone to rest, or if you want to spend private time with special people, we can unplug your telephone and place a Do Not Disturb sign on your door. Just ask. Diet If you have special dietary needs or requests, please tell the staff and they will make appropriate arrangements. Father or partner will provided a daily breakfast. Mother Baby Unit Family unity is of primary importance to our staff. Our care is designed to foster attachment and bonding of the family. We want to provide parents with the skills necessary to take care of yourselves and your baby. The baby is a vital link in the family unit. Family members benefit from early contact with the newborn. Therefore, we want to allow as much time as possible for the family to be together. Babies remain in the room with mothers but there may be times when the baby will need to return to the Nursery for tests. Human breast milk is the perfect food for your baby. It has all the right ingredients in just the right amounts. If you are breastfeeding, it is recommended that the baby stay in your room as much as possible so you can gain confidence breastfeeding. Both the Nursery nurses and postpartum nurses have extensive training to help with breastfeeding. A Lactation Consultant is also available. Hand Washing Unclean hands are the greatest source of infection for a newborn. Hand washing is important for everyone handling the baby. 1. Wash your hands every time before handling the baby. 2. Wash your hands every time after using the toilet. 3. Use soap and scrub hands well, washing all surfaces including your nails and wrist. 4. Rinse your hands thoroughly. Safety The staff at Dameron wants to keep you and your baby safe during your stay. Here are a few rules to follow: 1. The NICU, Labor and Delivery and Mother-Baby Units are equipped with a 24 hour video monitoring system and all access controlled. For security, all newborns admitted to the Mother-Baby Units will be banded with an electronic sensor. 2. When your baby is in your room, keep the crib beside your bed, on the side away from the door. Keep the door closed or the curtain pulled while the baby is with you. 3. When you need to use the bathroom, pull the infant s crib near the bathroom door. 4. Never leave your baby alone in your room, not even for a minute. If you need to leave the room, call a nurse or take the baby in the crib to the Nursery. 5. Do not let anyone you do not know take your baby out of the room! All staff members wear scrub uniforms; have a name badge with their picture and a second identification badge. Our security policy will be explained in further detail when you come to the postpartum area

TIPS FOR EXPECTANT PARENTS TIPS FOR EXPECTANT PARENTS 6. If the person s picture does not match their looks, do not let them take your child. If they are acting strangely call the nurse immediately. You must show your special identification band whenever you get the baby from the Nursery. During delivery you may designate the baby s father or one other person who may pick up your baby. 7. When walking in the halls with your baby push the baby in the crib rather than carrying in your arms. This helps insure your safety as well as the baby s. 8. Wear slippers or shoes when out of bed. We will provide them if necessary. 9. Do not keep valuables in the hospital. 10. If your baby spits up, use the bulb syringe provided in the crib to clear the nose and mouth. A nurse will demonstrate its use. 11. The hospital provides the baby with needed supplies during the stay. Visitor Information in Maternity The security, safety and comfort of our patients, babies and families are of utmost importance at Dameron Hospital, we recognize that family and friends are an important part of your birth experience, and we want your visitors to feel welcome and your stay to be pleasant.
