Fee: $10 CT Scan for Calcium Scoring A Cardiac CT scan for calcium scoring is used to detect coronary artery disease (CAD) at an early stage when there are no symptoms. This screening procedure is most often suggested for men aged 45 years or older and for women who are aged 55 and above or who are postmenopausal. The total cost of this procedure is $200. Must be 18 years or older. 2 Heart Healthy Screening Plus The VAP (Vertical Auto Profile) test is an expanded cholesterol test that provides valuable information that can identify hidden heart disease risk above and beyond the Lipid Profile. The VAP test includes all of the Lipid Profile and more. It is an actual count, not just a calculation, and is emerging as the new standard of care for cholesterol risk assessment. You do not need to fast for this test, unless you are specifically looking at your triglyceride results. Fee: $65 or $61 for seniors (55-plus) Lipid Profile is a blood test that includes total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides and cholesterol/hdl ratio. Twelve hours of fasting is recommended for the most accurate results. Fee: $35 or $31 for seniors (55-plus) Homocysteine is a substance produced as the body digests protein. Excess levels can be associated with heart disease and stroke. It is an excellent marker for the status of a person s vascular fitness. Fee: $95 HsCRP: High sensitivity C-Reactive Protein can be an indicator of risk for cardivascular disease in healthy people. It is a marker for assessing acute inflammation. In order to assess any cardiac correlation, please delay this test for two weeks after any inflammatory episodes. Fee: $45 Blood pressure monitoring. FREE Glucose (Fasting Blood Sugar) is a basic screening for diabetes. Twelve hours of fasting is recommended. Fee: $8 A1c measures the amount of sugar in the blood over a period of 2-3 months. This is a test especially for known diabetics. Fee: $40 Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) is a prostate cancer-screening test for men. Fee: $40 Body Fat Analysis will break down your weight by body fat, lean muscle and water. For best results, do not drink coffee or exercise 12 hours prior to the test. 3 Health and Faith Faith Community Nurse (Parish Nurse) & Health Ministry Network Support Join faith community nurses and health ministers to share ideas to help integrate health and wellness into the communities where we live and worship. Services available include: consultation with congregation in the development of health ministry and faith community nursing; health education classes and programs at your place of worship; and educational meetings. For more information or to join our mailing list, call Faith Community Nurse Training This course is designed for Registered Nurses who have a desire to develop specialty skills around whole person care, with a focus on faith. The training is based on an interfaith model that recognizes and incorporates a diversity of belief systems. Continuing nursing education is offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. Trainings are held at Columbia Union College. This class is intended to improve your knowledge and to help ensure your safe and appropriate use of medications. A Pharmacist will be available to discuss medication use, safety and to answer your questions. May 6: Flashers and Floaters Protecting Your Retina Flashers appear as flashing lights or lightning streaks in the field of vision, although no light is actually flashing. A floater is a small clump of gel that forms in the vitreous of the eye, the clear jelly like fluid which fills the cavity inside the eye. Floaters may be seen as dots, lines, cobwebs, or spiders and are most often noticed when reading, looking at a blank wall or gazing at a clear sky. Does this sound familiar? Come and learn more about flashers and floaters and what to do about them. June 10: Eating Out with Your Heart in Mind It is okay to love eating out. There are ways to do this healthfully. Learn how to evaluate menus and make choices that will be healthy and allow you to enjoy dining out in a healthy way. Birth, Baby Care, & Breastfeeding Six Week Course Topics include labor and delivery, breathing and relaxation techniques, comfort measures, medications, hospital procedures, cesarean delivery, and postpartum routines. Baby care and breastfeeding are the last two classes in this series. Register for Infant Safety and CPR at the same time to receive a discount on the CPR class. We recommend scheduling your childbirth course at least three weeks prior to your due date. Fee: $130 per couple. Wednesdays, April 23 - May 28; June 11 - July 16, 7-9:30 pm Birth & Baby Care Two Day Course Learn about labor and delivery, breathing and relaxation techniques, comfort measures, medications, hospital procedures, cesarean delivery, postpartum routines, and the basics of baby care. The breastfeeding class is FREE with this course. Register for classes separately (see Breastfeeding Class schedule below). Register for Infant Safety and CPR at the same time to receive a discount on the CPR class. We recommend scheduling your childbirth course at least three weeks prior to your due date. Two Saturdays, April 19 & 26; May 10 & 17; June 7 & 14, 10 am - 5 pm Two Sundays, June 22 & 29; July 20 & 27, 10 am - 5 pm Express Childbirth Class Learn the nitty-gritty about labor and delivery, and pain management when you join these two childbirth classes. You may register separately for Baby Care and Breastfeeding classes, which are not included in the Express Class. Fee: $65 per couple; Comfort Measures videotape (optional) is $40. Wednesdays, April 30 & May 7 or June 18 & 25, 7-9:30 pm Cesarean Birth Class Learn what to expect when you are expecting a cesarean. Several class and self-study options are available. Vaginal Birth after Cesarean Class In a two-hour private class, the expectant couple will be able to explore the benefits and risks of having a vaginal birth after a previous cesarean with a nurse who has experienced both deliveries. 4 Private Childbirth Class Private classes can be designed to meet your special needs and/or schedule. Childbirth preparation typically requires four hours of instruction. Call for scheduling. Fee: $50 per hour at or $60 per hour at participants home. Breastfeeding Class Expectant parents will learn the many benefits of breastfeeding and how to get off to the best start when the baby is born. FREE to participants in our Birth & Baby Care two-day course; $35 per couple. Topics include bathing, diapering, cord care, circumcision care, taking a temperature, and determining when to call the doctor. This class is included in the comprehensive Birth & Baby Care course. Wednesday, May 21 or July 9, 7:00-9:30 pm Baby Care for Adoptive Parents A mutually convenient time will be scheduled for you to meet with an instructor, a nurse and adoptive mother of two. Sibling Preparation Class Big brothers and sisters, 3 9 years old, will practice techniques including holding and diapering a baby, and receive a class certificate and coloring book. This eight-week program is built around three major areas of weight management: eating habits, nutrition and physical activity. Temple Emanuel Connecticut Ave. Kensington, MD Mondays, am Self-Improvement Classes CHIPS - The Coronary Health Improvement Program The primary goals of this 30-day, comprehensive educational program are to substantially lower blood lipid, blood pressures, and blood sugar levels. Secondary goals are to decrease excess weight, eliminate smoking, enhance daily exercise, and adopt better stress-coping strategies, which may decrease the need for medications for hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease. Coronary risk-factor levels will be carefully assessed before the educational intervention begins, following the 30-day program phase is completed, and again after 12 months. The Vision for Expanded Access includes seven key elements designed to enhance access to care for the community and provide improved health care facilities and services: 1. Development of a Center on Health Disparities that combines clinical care, research and health careers training for historically under-served populations within the hospital s service area. 2. Working with various partners to expand available health care resources to under-served communities in Montgomery and Prince George s counties. 3. A commitment to provide uncompensated care at significant levels. 4. Development of a health care center in the Long Branch community to improve access to care. 5.
