news CENTRE WPSH Season s Greetings Ribbon weekly newsletter of West Parry Sound Health Centre December 19 to The Engine Room of Change at West Parry Sound Health Centre underwent a face lift recently and the team behind the transformation gathered to cheer the fresh new look. Pictured with our Maintenance Department staff cutting the ribbon is Brenda Ryan of FAD designs, and Brenda Timmins and Diane Heal of Rona. Foundation renovation and $6 million more reasons for celebration Donors to the Foundation have fueled extraordinary change within the health centre since Since that year, the Foundation has transferred $6,000,000 to the health centre, buying among other items the $1,160,000 new pharmacy system (our donor-purchased PIPER Bongard Unit Dose system has already saved the health centre $45,000 in meds since installation in the spring); $266,000 worth of new surgical equipment and a new $120,000 C-Arm for the OR; a new $320,000 Patient Monitoring system for ICU reopening the unit when it closed in April 2014; a new mammography unit; new ultrasound unit; three new anesthetic machines with various additional attachments; all four Bi-Pap machines in ICU and ER; new vital signs machine in the chemo unit; exercise equipment and a new telemetry system in Cardiac Rehab; renewed all 10 defibs placed throughout the health centre; a new $1,000,000 PACS system; renewed lots of technical equipment to avert a catastrophic breakdown; a washer decontaminator for MDR; created our palliative care unit; new tissue processor in the lab; stress test machine in cardiac care; new pain pumps; and MORE! continued on page 3

Merry Christmas & Best Wishes for a Happy and Healthy New Year From everyone in 4th floor Administration Erin, Anne, Deborah Nicole, Jim, & Donald Thank you for your exceptional care On behalf of the Lakeland Long Term Care and West Parry Sound Health Centre Boards of Directors it gives us great pleasure to extend our Very Best Wishes for a Safe and Happy Holiday Season to all staff members, volunteers, physicians, and community partners. As representatives from the communities we serve, we experience evidence of your exceptional care each and every day of the year. Thank you for your compassion, skill, and dedication to the health of our Patients and Families, Residents, and wellness throughout the communities we are privileged to serve. Wishing you Peace, Happiness, and Good Health. Ted Krug, Chair LLTC Terry Fraser, Chair WPSHC

Donors fuel the engine that creates change and sustains care at WPSHC continued from front page When you see the list, you understand that our Foundation office - fueled by donors - has become the Engine Room of Change for the health centre. This past month we have made an enormous commitment to the health centre administration. We will transfer a minimum of $6,250,000 over five years, with the goal of reaching $10,000,000 in that time, for the installation of Electronic Health Records. Our Foundation is accountable to our Donors, our volunteer board and our community. We have worked hard over the last number of years to communicate, raise average rates of donations, and increase the number of donors. In 2010 our donations passed the $1,000,000 revenue target. In 2011 our Foundation won a prestigious award for our creativity and transparency. In 2013 our donations passed the $2,000,000 revenue target. And in 2016 we budgeted $2,000,000 in revenues for the first time. We are the little engine that keeps plugging away. And now we are committing to $10,000,000 in five years to install Electronic Health Records (EHR). EHR changes the odds. We become one of the 151 health centres with an electronic information system. At present we are one off the eight hospitals in the province not connected. It s that kind of financial contribution from our Donors that makes the Foundation the true Engine of Change for the health centre. To keep up with the health centre s financial needs, we have hired a third person, Brooks Smith. To accommodate Brooks, we created a third office within what were two. On October 17 Brenda Ryan of FAD Design donated an architectural drawing for our office design. The weekend of November 5 and 6 Maintenance and IT carved up the space to Brenda s specs. Monday, November 7 Maintenance informed me we needed a new carpet as the existing one had rotted out. I went to my go-to-professionals, Brenda Timmins and Diane Heal at Rona and by the end of the day we had carpet and installers working into the night, donating their time to finish the renos so we could get the Engine cranking again! We are so thankful to everyone who helps fuel our Engine of Change! Please drop in for a tour! On behalf of our Volunteer Board, our Board Chair Joan Conn, Cathy, Brooks, and me - Merry Christmas Lynne, Captain of the Engine Season s Greetings & Our Best Wishes Thank You for Generously Supporting Local Health Care

This newsletter and other helpful information can be found on-line at Contact News Centre editor Jim Hanna extension 4144 NEWS FROM QUEEN S PARK Patients First aims to create more integrated health care system Earlier this month the provincial government passed legislation intended to help patients and their families obtain better access to a more local and integrated health care system, improving the patient experience and delivering higher-quality care. The Patients First Act, according to a Provincial news release, will help ensure patients are at the centre of the health care system. Once fully implemented, changes supported by the new legislation will: Improve access to primary care for people in Ontario, including a single number to call when they need health information or advice on where to find a new family doctor or nurse practitioner. Improve local connections between primary care providers, interprofessional health care teams, hospitals, public health, and home and community care to ensure a smoother patient experience and transitions. Streamline and reduce administration of the health care system and direct savings into patient care. Enhance accountability to better ensure people in Ontario have access to care when they need it. Formally connect Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs) and local boards of health to leverage their community expertise and ensure local public health units are involved in community health planning. Strengthen the voices of patients and families in their own health care planning. Increase the focus on cultural sensitivity and the delivery of health care services to Indigenous peoples and French speaking people in Ontario. Ontario will continue to engage Indigenous partners through a parallel process that will collaboratively identify the requirements necessary to achieve responsive and transformative change. Through the work of the Patients First: Action Plan for Health Care, Ontario is committed to connecting a family doctor or nurse practitioner to everyone who wants one. Since 2004, the government has created 200 Family Health Teams, 25 Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics, and supported a significant expansion of Ontario s Community Health Centres. The ministry consulted and engaged extensively in English and French with more than 6,000 individuals and organizations across the province to help inform the proposed improvements to the health care system. Our Hospital Elder Life Program Helping to create a Healthier Community Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to Patients & Families Staff & Physicians From all of the WPSHC Volunteers The Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP) at West Parry Sound Health Centre is a multidisciplinary approach to enhancing the care of older adults while they are hospitalized. By combining the efforts of staff, physicians, and volunteers the program works to eliminate the decline in mental and physical abilities that can occur with older patients while they are in hospital. Many of these patients can find comfort in the assistance of well trained and compassionate volunteers. Under the direction and supervision of staff, our specially trained HELP volunteers can assist us in providing improved patient and family centred care that aims to prevent decline in mental/cognitive and physical functioning. HELP volunteer tasks may include: Daily visits with HELP patients to provide friendly support and communication. Bedside visits can include activities such as reminiscing, games, and discussion of current events. Walking with active HELP patients. Assisting HELP patients to do range of motion exercises. Providing assistance and companionship during meals. Training and Orientation: New HELP volunteers will receive orientation on confidentiality, infection control, safety codes, and a tour of selected areas of the health centre. They will also receive specialized classroom training and on-unit training under the direction of the HELP Coordinator. To get involved, or for more information, please contact Kristen Millett Exercise Specialist and HELP Coordinator Phone: ext kmillett@wpshc.com

Happy Holidays! I m reaching out this week with a timely bit of information. The weather over the last week has started to impact our clinic collections. For example, as I write this, we have made the decision to cancel our Barrie clinic today due to the severe winter weather. That means 32 units of blood WON T be collected tonight - 32 units that won t be available for hospital patients. Similarly, we were recently shy on our collections targets in Orillia and Newmarket because of weather. We understand when the weather is bad, cancellations are a possibility. And there s a tendency to think that someone else will fill the void when you miss your donation, but that s not always the case, so we would encourage donors who miss their chance to donate because of weather to find an open clinic as soon as possible after the weather clears and help us recoup any collections we may have missed, so that hospital patients have the blood they need, when they need it. That being said, here are the details of an upcoming clinic in January. As we anticipate further weather related impacts this winter, it is so important that you consider donating blood in January to help us recoup any lost collections and build our inventory back up after the holidays. Please share this message with your network, and on behalf of all Canadian hospital patients, THANK YOU! Wishing you a safe holiday, and many blessings in the New Year! Elaine St. Pierre, Territory Manager Canadian Blood Services Whenever you donate blood, please register to help WPSHC meet our commitment to support the Partners for Life Campaign.

LIFE at Lakeland Holiday tips for health care workers The holiday festivities and an increase in visitors may disrupt normal routine so be flexible. Ensure to have a quiet place for residents that are more confused or over-stimulated over the holidays with visitors and activities. Assist visitors by communicating with them if there are good times to visit. Some residents may have times during the day where they are better able to deal with visitors. Assist visitors with activities that the resident enjoys to enhance their visit but communicate to them that their visit is a wonderful gift. You may be able to learn valuable information from families when communicating with them about some of the stories you know and activities that the resident participates in daily. Reassure with family members about the importance of their visit and the importance of their input. Many family members are struggling with guilt over the holidays. Be open minded and understand that there are some families that struggle to visit their loved ones. Don t judge. Understand and recognize the many emotions that may be present during the holidays either from residents, families or even your co-workers. Support each other. Make residents and their families feel confident about the care you are providing. This is the best gift you can give! Above all, remember... before you can do any of the above mentioned tips, you need to take time to care for yourself. Greetings from the Lakeland Family Christmas Residents, families, staff, volunteers, and friends gathered on a very stormy night last week to celebrate the Christmas Season. Merry Christmas & and a Happy New Year!
