2 SUMMER DANCE INTENSIVE July 9 - July 27, 2007 Body Moves Summer Dance Intensive, is a newly formed full day preprofessional program for youth and teens ranging from 7-18 years of age. This multi-level intensive is designed to encourage, motivate, and challenge the dancers to tap into their inner potential to identify specific areas of interest and work to significantly improve technical ability. The program focuses on further developing skill sets, enhancing and reinforcing technique, and introducing students to some of the history and background of dance. Under the tutelage of Artistic Program Manager & BodyMoves Contemporary Dance Company (BCDC) Director, Katherine smith, her staff and noted guest instructors, students receive intense training in the genres of Jazz, Ballet, Modern, Tap and Traditional (African) through classes, workshops, master classes, lectures, seminars, written assignments and video viewing. Katherine Smith - Artistic Program Manager & BCDC Director Katherine is a former professional dancer who has worked with renowned choreographers, James Truitte, Talley Beatty, Ulysseus Dove, Donald McKayle, Kevin AIega@ Jeff and Faye Snow. Her concert experiences include Dayton Contemporary, Rod Rodgers, Forces of Nature, New World, D.C. Contemporary and Juba Dance Companies. Katherine has toured Africa in ASpirit@; Beijing, China in the first Pacific Cultural Exchange; Vienna, Austria for the 6 th Annual Summer Dance Festival and Seoul, Korea sponsored by American Dance Festival. Her theater credits include Debbie Allen=s ASoul Possessed@ at the Kennedy Center in Washington and the Alliance Theater in Atlanta; George Faison=s AFor Colored Girls@ at the American Place Theater in New York (Off Broadway) and Baltimore=s Center Stage; Mike Malone=s ABlack Nativity@ in which she received the O=Keefer Award for Best Female Dancer in a Musical Production; ABessie=s Blues@ at the Studio Theater (Helen Hayes Award); APurlie@ at the Fox Theater in Atlanta; and the national tour of AThe Wiz.A Katherine, an Equity Union Member in the Arts, received an Honor=s Award in recognition for achievements as a performer and instructor from the International Association of Blacks in Dance. She is the former Co-Director of The Adrain Bolton & Katherine Smith Dance Center. In addition to her responsibilities as Artistic Program Manager and Company Director at Body Moves, Katherine is currently on the Dance Faculties of The Duke Ellington School of the Arts and Howard University. 1
3 Requirements Students must have at least 1 year of previous dance training. Students must be 7 years of age by January 1, Students should always arrive fully dressed in uniform! Students will consistently attend regularly scheduled classes, workshops, master classes, seminars and viewings. Students must complete all assignments to further enhance their physical and literary education in dance. Students are expected to work hard to maintain the highest possible standard of excellence at all times. Tuition/Payment The tuition for this program is $ Members not currently enrolled in classes at BodyMoves must also pay a $50.00 registration fee (non-refundable). Payment breakdown is as follows: $ (one half) must be paid on or before the first day of the program. $ (one half) must be paid on or before Monday, July 16, 2007 Tuition payments must be made in the morning at drop-off. A 5% discount may be applied to additional siblings (residing at the same address). There is no tuition refund once the program begins. Before & After Care Before and After Care is included in the program cost. BodyMoves Summer Dance Intensive Before and After Care is provided through BodyMoves, LLC/ Kids Moves Summer Camp: Before Care: 6:00 a.m.-9:00 a.m. After Care: 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. Drop Off/Pick-Up Students 15 years and under must be signed in and out by a parent or guardian. Students 16 and 17 years must have written permission by a parent/guardian to sign themselves in and out. Metro Shuttle A shuttle to and from the Branch Avenue Metro Station will be provided at an extra cost of $10/week. The shuttle will pick-up students at the metro station promptly at 8:30am and drop the students back at the metro station at 5:30pm. Any students under the age of 18 years requiring this service must have written permission from a parent/guardian on file at the center. Students will not be allowed to begin using this service until written permission is on file. 2
4 Late Pick-up There is no one available to watch your child earlier or later than designated before and after care hours. There will be a ten minute grace period after which a late pick-up fee of $1.00 per minute will be charged. The clock in the reception area at the center or in any other venue (including director=s wrist watch) will determine the time. If late fees are not paid when the child is pickedup they will be added to the student=s account. Please do not drop off students earlier than designated time without BodyMoves supervision. Students under the age of 16 years must always be signed out by parent/guardian. Breakfast & Snacks A healthy nutritious breakfast is available for any students arriving at the center between 6:00am and 7:30am. A mid morning and mid afternoon snack are also provided. Breakfast and snacks are provided at no extra cost. Student s who don t arrive at the center in time for breakfast, should eat a health breakfast at home. Students will only be allowed to eat at designated times throughout the day. Lunch Students will receive 45 minutes for lunch. Students should bring a Nutritious lunch in an insulated lunch bag (cold packs) to keep drinks cold and food fresh. Microwave and Refrigeration is not available. Please be mindful that other BodyMoves programs are in session. Quick and Convenient is the Key! Bring a roll-up Mat for a rest period and Plenty of Water!! (try to avoid juices, sports drinks & sodas) Dress Code/Uniform & Grooming We want our students to feel good about what they are doing and have an understanding of the traditional etiquette connected to their dance education. Proper attire and grooming helps students ALook the Part/Play the Role!@ Proper attire and grooming also diminishes distractions and allows instructors to view and correct placement, posture, body line, shape and other physical applications. All Summer Dance Intensive participants must adhere to the following, dress code, grooming and uniform guidelines. Any students not in uniform will not be allowed to participate in the days activities. For your convenience, order your dance supplies and cover-ups from BodyMoves. A catalog of the supplies we offer is available at the front desk. Dress Code:! All students are expected to wear the required program uniform and shoes.! Students must come to class dressed and ready to start. Please do not come into class with street clothes or cover-ups still over leotard and tights. (If the studio space is to cool, students may be permitted to wear sweats or sweaters over their leotards and tights (at the instructor=s discretion). Bags and outer clothing should be left in the dressing rooms. Pocket books/purses and small bags that facilitate the carrying of dance shoes are the only bags allowed in the studios.! Female students will not be allowed to go outside without the proper street 3
5 clothing over their leotards and tights.! Students should never wear dance shoes outside. Always carry them to and from the center. Grooming:! Hair (including braids) must be secured in a bun so that there are no loose pieces. A hairnet is recommended. NO large bows, barrettes, head scarves or other hair adornments except hair pins.! No jewelry of any kind should be worn.! Female students should not wear panties under the tights unless it is absolutely necessary (in the event panties are needed, black is recommended).! Female students should wear appropriate support under the leotard (athletic bra) if necessary.! We encourage and recommend female students of appropriate age remove underarm hair (as necessary).! Male students 12 years and older must wear athletic supporters. Uniform: Females:! Black long sleeve, short sleeve or tank style leotard (NO camisole, spaghetti strap, criss-cross back or low cut back/front leotards)! Flesh toned tights (caramel color only)! Flesh toned ballet slippers (split sole preferred)! Flesh toned pointe shoes (if necessary)! Black low cut dance sneakers! Black oxford tap shoes Males:! White tank T-shirt or short sleeve style (fit to body)! Black tights preferred or (elastic, drawstring waist sweat pants (no pockets) or jazz pants.! Black ballet slippers! Black low cut dance sneaker! Black oxford tap shoes Student Conduct Students are expected to conduct themselves in a positive, respectful, and disciplined manner at all times. Excessive talking, not paying attention, rudeness or other inappropriate behavior will result in a student-parent-director conference. Uncorrected behavior may result in dismissal from the program (tuition is non-refundable). We also expect our students to show respect, kindness and support to fellow students and instructors. No gum is allowed in the center at any time. Food and drinks (including snacks) may only be consumed in the student lounge and/or designated eating areas. Only bottled water (no cups) is allowed in the studios. 4
6 Arrival Students should arrive at least ten minutes before the scheduled class start time. All students under the age of 16 must be signed in by a parent or guardian. To be properly prepared and avoid injury, it is necessary for all students to participate in the complete warm-up at the beginning of each session. Students who arrive ten minutes or more after the start of any class may be requested to sit quietly and observe the session (instructor discretion). Absences When it is necessary to miss a day or come in late, we ask that you call the office to let us know. Students who regularly miss class, arrive late or leave early seriously affect their own progress and that of other students. Student Progress Should a Parent have questions and/or concerns, the director and/or Instructor will be more than happy to set an appointed time for a conference. Parent- Instructor Conference forms are available at the front desk for your convenience. Please do not attempt to discuss students= progress with the director and/or instructor during or between classes. Watching Students in Class Parents, friends and family are not allowed in the studios during class unless invited by the director or instructor. To enable you to view your child=s progress, we have installed a closed circuit monitoring systems in the studios. The monitor in the reception area will allow parents, friends and family to view classes in session. In Studio Parent Visitation Days: Wednesday, July 25 - Friday, July 27, Premature Withdrawals Please make every effort to participate until the end of the Summer Dance Intensive Program. Withdrawing students prior to the completion of the program will adversely affect their progress. Your child will greatly benefit from his/her involvement in this program. 7 Summer Dance Intensive Permission /Waiver Form This form must be read and signed by a parent or guardian before a child can attend BodyMoves Summer Dance Intensive. Waiver I understand that BodyMoves, LLC assumes no responsibilities for injuries or illness which my child may sustain as a result of his/her physical condition or resulting from his/her participation in any dance, exercise, games, or other related activities. I expressly acknowledge on behalf of myself and my heirs that I assume the risk for any and all injuries and illness, which may result from his/her participation in these activities. I hereby release and discharge BodyMoves, LLC, its agents, servants, and employees from any and all claims for injury, illness, death, loss, or damages which he/she suffers as a result of his/her participation in these activities. I understand that BodyMoves, LLC is not responsible for personal property lost or stolen while participants are in the BodyMoves facility or on the BodyMoves premises. I give permission to BodyMoves, LLC to use without limitation or obligation, photographs, film footage or tape recordings, which may include my child s image or voice for purposes of promoting BodyMoves, LLC programs.
