This has been a most challenging year in school health. Students are at school with more intense problems than ever before. Each and every one of us feels the intensity every day we are at school! Reach out to new sources and to fellow school nurses. The school environment is ever changing! One of our biggest assignments at school is meeting the requirements of Mandated Screenings. Vision screening is one of our state mandates. It is a great responsibility and a valuable screening provided in school, 85% of learning is visual! Legislation is what brings changes to the California Education Code. Legislation changed vision screening in 2015, near vision was added, etc. California School Nurses Organization (CSNO) along with a Vision Screening Task force developed updated vision screening guidelines and submitted them to The California Department of Education (CDE). The CSNO website reports that the CDE continues their review and online publication edits of the proposed revisions of the Vision Screening Guidelines for Public Schools. CSNO also reports that the The Optometry Board will be once again proposing legislation that will impact school nurses and vision screening. In an effort to provide documentation of the interventions provided to students (no cost vision screenings, referrals being made, resources being provided), CSNO is collecting statistics on vision services provided at school. Please complete the survey for services you have delivered/will deliver this school year. Advocating for school health services is the responsibility of each one of us. Please provide this information so our work does not go unnoticed. This is an important service we provide to our students and parents. Information for reporting can be found at CSNO.org. Additionally, information is posted on CSNO.org regarding the use of off label medications. The American Academy of Pediatrics has a position statement on the use of off-label medication use with children. The purpose of off-label use is to benefit the individual patient. Check your board policies for medications at school. Most Board Policies are listed on your district websites, under the heading Board of Education. Staying current in your practice is the responsibility of the school nurse. Attend school nurse conferences; they are full of information and networking! Stay in contact with other school nurses! LACSNA will host our Winter Conference on January 25, Registration information is available in this newsletter. LACSNA and CSNO are very valuable resources. Our LACSNA conference is in January; CSNO state conference is in March Hope to see you at both! We are trained in and work in a great profession! The board meets every 2 months (Sept May) and plans two small conferences in two evenings in October and January. More BRILLIANT minds are needed to join up! If you are not sure, come to one of the upcoming board meetings and sit or start as a Member at- Large. You will be surprised how rewarding it is!

5 CSNO News CSNO e-newsplash of Thursday January 5, 2017 Diastat Law Sunsets Education Code section sunsets on 12/31/16. Recall states "an emergency anti-seizure medication should be administered by a school nurse or a licensed vocational nurse who has been trained in its administration." However, in the absence of a nurse,"nonmedical employees can volunteer to provide medical assistance to pupils with epilepsy suffering from seizures." Additionally, there were a host of other conditions that school districts were required to meet as part of the statute.with the Education Code sunsetting, the antiseizure medication described in the statute will be considered like all other medication administered under Education Code 49423
