3 President s Message Welcome to the 2016 LHIMA Convention! We are so excited to have all of you in Baton Rouge for this year s convention! First and foremost, I would like to thank Melissa Norris, the 2016 Convention Director, along with all of her volunteers for all that they have done to make this meeting a success. They make the process look so seamless! I would also like to thank all of our Corporate and Lagniappe Sponsors as well as all of the vendors that support us throughout the year! What a year this has been! We finally implemented ICD-10! We did it!!! What a major accomplishment! We hosted the 2015 AHIMA Convention in New Orleans and it was without a doubt a success. It has been such an honor to be able to serve all of you as President during this momentous year. It has been a pleasure to be able to advocate for all of you at the national level and voicing your concerns, representing our CSA in AHIMA s House of Delegates, and to meet so many HIM Professionals across the country. I will forever be grateful for this tremendous opportunity. I would like to thank all of the volunteers that have served on the LHIMA Board of Directors with me, without the work from all of you, we would not have been able to accomplish all that we set out to do. And last but not least I would like to thank Ralph Morrison, our Executive Director. Without Ralph I don t know that any of this would be possible! I truly appreciate all of his support and guidance! I encourage each of you to consider volunteering. There are several volunteer opportunities at the District and State levels. There is a volunteer interest form on the LHIMA website under the member s tab that you can fill out and submit. I promise that you will have plenty of mentoring and guidance from myself as well as my fellow board members. Volunteering has been such a rewarding experience. I have met so many wonderful HIM Professionals across the state and the nation. It has enriched my life professionally as well as personally. It is an opportunity that everyone should take time to partake in! We have some GREAT speakers and topics on our agenda over the next 3 days. We have time for plenty of education as well as some time for a little bit of fun. I look forward to getting the opportunity to hopefully seeing and talking with you over the next few days! 4 Incoming President s Message Welcome to the 2016 LHIMA Annual Convention! As President-elect, it is a pleasure to have a part in bringing to you an exciting venue to learn more about, and develop your skills in health information management. As we address how our core competencies are being shaped by the changes around us and delve into an understanding of the technology available to support our efforts, we hope that you will take advantage of all that the team who worked so diligently on this program has provided. Specifically, I would like to thank Melissa Norris and her team for their tireless efforts in crafting an agenda that will equip you to be better prepared for the HIM world of the future. I know that we have all worked very hard to bring the idea of ICD10 to reality and now that it s here, we hope to bring you information that will help you become the experts. CDI, Data Management, and Patient Identifiers are all cutting edge issues for our profession and we want you to have access to the latest and most update ideas on how to be successful in these areas. As your President for , I am ready to roll up my sleeves and continue to provide you, our members, with the necessary tools to be a winner in your work environment. We are an integral part of the healthcare delivery system. We have the expertise, knowledge and skill that no one else has. We will support, build on and help you to leverage that knowledge so that you will continue to be a resource for your organizations. We are working hard on a program that will continue to provide tools and references that are easily accessible. We will continue to advocate for your interests and ask that you consider participating in that effort. You are needed and valued and we want each and every one of you to be an active participant in LHIMA. 10 Speakers Wednesday Keynote and Preconference Workshop Desla Mancilla, DHA, RHIA Sr. Director, Academic Affairs, AHIMA Foundation Ryan Sandefer, M.A. Chair & Assistant Professor, The College of St. Scholastica, Department of Health Informatics and Information Management Brief Bio Desla Mancilla, DHA, RHIA is the Senior Director of Academic Affairs for the AHIMA Foundation. In her HIM career prior to joining the Foundation, she held a variety of academic and practice based positions including Health Informatics Information Management Program Director, Assistant Professor, Regional Director of Information Protection Services and EHR Project Manager. Mancilla s doctoral dissertation was on patient acceptance of biometrics methods for identity verification. She has also published several articles and presentations on medical identity theft. Mancilla is a frequent speaker at both national and international conferences on topics related to medical identity theft, electronic health records, privacy and security, global curricula for the health information professions, and AHIMA/AHIMA Foundation s Transforming Health Information Workforce: Reality 2016 initiative. As a Past- President of the Indiana Health Information Management Association and through various other state and national HIM leadership positions, Mancilla has demonstrated her knowledge of and commitment to the HIM profession. Mancilla is currently serving as an appointee on the United States Department of Labor s Advisory Council on Apprenticeships. Prior to joining the AHIMA Foundation, Mancilla was appointed to and served on the privacy workgroup for the Chicago Health Information Exchange through the Metropolitan Chicago Healthcare Council. Ryan Sandefer is an assistant professor and the chair of the Department of Health informatics and Information Management at the College of St. Scholastica. Currently, Mr. Sandefer teaches courses in consumer informatics, data analytics, and research design. Mr. Sandefer has a master s degree in political science from the University of Wyoming and is completing a PhD in health informatics from the University of Minnesota. Mr. Sandefer also holds a certification as a health information technology professional (CPHIT). Currently, Mr. Sandefer serves as the pastchair of the AHIMA Council for Excellence in Education, a current presenter for the AHIMA faculty development regional meetings, and an instructor for the CHDA exam prep workshops. Mr. Sandefer has extensive experience working with large healthcare datasets and analytic procedures. Recently, Mr. Sandefer co-edited the textbook Data Analytics in Healthcare Research: Tools and Strategies through AHIMA press, which offers a unique opportunity to experience big data from a hands-on perspective using open source tools and data. 9

11 Presentation Title: Pre-Convention Workshop: HIM Professional Competencies How Do YOU Fit in the Changing HIM Landscape? Key Note Address: Reality 2016 and its Effect on our Future as Health Information Management Professionals Presentation Description: Pre-Convention Workshop Description: During this interactive session, participants will complete a self-assessment process to identify personal strengths and opportunities for improvement based on current HIM competencies. Remaining current and relevant in the changing healthcare landscape is important both to the individual and the HIM profession. Working individually and in small groups, this session will offer strategies to transition from lower to higher level competence in new professional competency domains of practice. Key Note Address Description: How do we realize the promise of the HIM profession in a way that meaningfully places HIM as the cornerstone of data and information management initiatives throughout the healthcare industry? HIM professionals must evaluate their own professional competence and act accordingly to remain relevant in the changing world of HIM. Awareness of the need to remain personally current, along with AHIMA s Strategic Plan and Academic Vision, can position the HIM profession (and professional) for success in the future. 10

Donahue, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CPC Associate Professor, Medical Coding, Delgado Community College Sandra Ryen, CCS, CPC-A, Inpatient Coder at Ochsner Health System Brief Bio Linda H. Donahue, RHIT, CCS, CCS P, CPC has been an AHIMA Approved ICD 10 Trainer since July 2009 when she attended the very first AHIMA Academy. She is currently an Associate Professor at Delgado Community College in New Orleans, LA where she has been a Medical Coding Instructor since 2001 in the Health Information Technology (HIT) Associate Degree Program, Medical Coding (MCC) Certificate Program, and Medical Registration Specialist Certificate Program. She serves on various college committees at Delgado. Linda has past experience working in a multi specialty group practice of over 40 physicians, serving as medical records and coding manager, compliance officer, physician E/M educator, and coding auditor. Linda currently serves on the AHIMA Assembly on Education (AOE) Program Committee. Linda has served in various positions including Past President of the LHIMA and GNOHIMA and loves to volunteer and network with her peers. Sandra Ryen, CCS, CPC-A is an inpatient coder at Ochsner Health System s 473 bed Acute Care facility in New Orleans, La. She graduated from the Medical Coding Technical Program at Delgado Community College in New Orleans in She is a member of AHIMA and AAPC and currently holds the position of President of AAPC of the Northshore Chapter. Her background includes 11 years of military duty, Evaluator of Social Services and Business Owner. She began Imagining and prepping documents and medical records out of college, volunteering at medical facilities, and eventually was accepted into Ochsner s intensive inpatient internship resulting in her current employment. She is an avid dog lover and gardener in her spare time. Presentation Title: CCS Prep Workshop Presentation Description: This CCS Prep Workshop will include an initial pre-assessment of the participant s knowledge of biomedical sciences, coding, documentation and regulatory guidelines. Exam content will broken-down by domain and a suggested study plan and timeline will be provided. 11

Joel Moorhead, MD, CPC DocuVoice/Faircode Brief Bio Dr. Joel Moorhead holds an MD degree from the University of Cincinnati, a Master of Public Health from the University of Arizona, and a PhD in Public Health from Rutgers/UMDNJ. He is board-certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Moorhead has served as director of the residency programs in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and in Occupational Medicine at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He has held a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) Certification from the American Association of Professional Coders since Dr. Moorhead currently serves as Chief Medical Officer for FairCode Associates, headquartered in Marco Island, Florida. Presentation Title: Making Good Decisions in Medical Coding and DRG Assignment Presentation Description: This presentation discusses principles and processes important to making good decisions. Topics include role of screening criteria in decision-making, benefits and risks of mental shortcuts, and the importance of considering characteristics specific to the individual in clinical validation of codes for medical conditions and surgical procedures. 12

14 Aimee Hansen, MA, PhD (c) Consultant, Framework Strategies Brief Bio Aimee Hansen often tells the story of the famed photographer, Dewitt Jones, who is given an assignment to shoot a field of dandelions for National Geographic. After procrastinating for days, uninterested and unenthused about what he considers a mundane subject, he grudgingly makes his way to the field. Upon his arrival, he discovers that he has waited so long to shoot the photographs that the ephemeral field of yellow dandelions has turned to seed. He has to reframe his parameters for the shoot and look at the field in a different way. He considers his situation a failure at first. But by changing his perspective, he ends the photo shoot with a prized image: not his initial plan, but instead a surprising but richer end result. Aimee has focused her career on guiding and coaching others how to view their work from a different perspective and how to reframe for the big picture. In addition to working with leaders in the business environment and serving as an organizational leader herself, she has expanded her practical knowledge to include leadership studies and theory in academia. Aimee thrives on developing and nurturing the seeds of opportunity in leaders and in organizations. Aimee is an Organizational and Leadership coach with extensive experience in the field of human resources and development. She has served in executive, consultant, and practitioner roles for human resources and organizational development, most recently at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana. Prior to her work at BCBSLA, Aimee s professional experience includes the design and management of organizational Leadership Development strategies, Succession Planning, and other organizational interventions including purposeful culture change, strategic planning, and leadership coaching. Aimee s professional experience extends back 20+ years. Aimee earned a Masters of Arts degree in Organizational and Leadership Development from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, with a concentration in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the University of Louisiana at Monroe (formally Northeast Louisiana University, Monroe, Louisiana). She is currently pursuing a PhD in Human Resources/Leadership Development at Louisiana State University. Aimee is certified in several areas to assist in promoting development, including Myers- Briggs Typology Inventory, StrengthsFinder, Leadership Practices Inventory, and is an Associate Certified Coach (ACC) with the International Coach Federation. 15 A.G. Alec Alexander, III, Attorney, Breazeale, Sachse & Wilson, LLP Brief Bio A.G. (Alec) Alexander, III is a partner in the Baton Rouge office of Breazeale, Sachse & Wilson, L.L.P. Mr. Alexander focuses his practice on healthcare-related white collar civil and criminal defense representing corporations and senior-level corporate officials in fraud matters. He also advises hospitals, hospital systems and other providers with respect to the full range of healthcare administrative, regulatory and law enforcement issues. Before joining BSW, Mr. Alexander was an attorney and healthcare executive at CHRISTUS Health Louisiana where he served as the Chief Compliance Officer. Before CHRISTUS, Mr. Alexander served for eight years as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of Louisiana handling healthcare fraud cases. In 2004 and 2009, Mr. Alexander was recognized by the Inspector General of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, who twice awarded him the Inspector General s Integrity Award for prosecuting health care fraud. 16 Pamela Loftin (Childress), RHIA, CCS Senior Consultant, Optum Brief Bio Pam Loftin, RHIA, CCS, has over 10 years of experience in the healthcare industry and currently serves as Senior Consultant for OptumInsight in the PPS and Payment Accuracy practice. Her background includes consulting in a variety of areas such as education and readiness for RAC reviews, APC/DRG reviews, clinical documentation improvement programs, Medicare Advantage reviews. Pam has been actively involved in ICD-10 assessment and preparation projects for payer clients. These projects include the use of Pam s knowledge of the GEMs to identify areas of focus for translation opportunities, estimate business function areas impacted, and prioritize training and education efforts. Pam is a certified ICD-10 Trainer by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) of which she has been a long-standing member. She is also a member of the Louisiana Health Information Management Association, and is certified as a Registered Health Information Administrator as well as a Certified Coding Specialist. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Information Management from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She serves on the HIPAA Collaborative of Wisconsin Board as the Wisconsin Health Information Management Association s representative. She serves as AHIMA House of Delegates Speaker-elect. She served on the AHIMA Board as a director from She is past president of WHIMA and the recipient of the WHIMA Distinguished Member and Outstanding Educator awards. Presentation Title: Managing Healthcare Communications in a Social Media Driven World Presentation Description: This presentation will focus on the challenges of social media and mobile devices in health care communications. The presenters will address the laws impacting the challenges and tools to address the privacy and security issues surrounding social media and mobile devices in health care. Dwan Thomas Flowers, MBA, RHIA, CCS AHIMA Board of Directors Brief Bio: Dwan Thomas-Flowers, MBA, RHIA, CCS, is an independent consultant, offering expertise in coding, management, HIM operations, quality management and revenue cycle. Currently, she serves as an ICD-10 Project Manager and is an AHIMA-approved ICD-10-M/PCS Trainer. Her AHIMA activities include past Professional Ethics and Triumph Award committee member, HOD Best Practices and Standards and Operations teams and ACE designation. Involved in several professional associations, she s held positions in many such as AHIMA, FHIMA, HIMSS, NAHSE and NFAHQ. She is former chair of the HIMSS ICD-10 Task Force, past-president of FHIMA and recipient of multiple industry awards including two AHIMA Triumph Awards for Leadership and Mentoring and two FHIMA Distinguished Member designations. Leigh Poland, RHIA, CCS Consultant Brief Bio Leigh Poland, RHIA, CCS has 17 + years of experience working in HIM in both the not for profit and the for profit healthcare setting. Leigh has worked as coder, coding supervisor, and director of HIM in a 250 bed acute care facility. She has experience in an acute care setting, post-acute care, behavioral health and a physician-owned ambulatory surgery center. Leigh worked in a corporate role for a major healthcare provider and had the opportunity to work closely with HIM directors, supervisors, and coders across the United States. Under the CJR model, hospitals would be at financial risk for the care provided during the initial hospital stay plus 90 days after discharge from the hospital. HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM On behalf of the Southern University at Shreveport Health Information Technology Program faculty and myself, I would first like to extend our disappointment in not being able to attend the 2016 LHIMA State Convention this year due to the unfortunate budget cuts being experienced all across higher education. I greatly appreciate the opportunity to share some of the highlights and exciting events that have taken place in our program over the last year. The University broke ground on a dedicated Allied Health Building in early 2015 which is slated for completion by the end of The HIT and Medical Coding programs will have a new dedicated classroom and lab as well as faculty offices. Curriculum revisions are ever-evolving to meet the needs of the program s communities of interest. With that said, CAHIIM is implementing revised curriculum competencies and revised Blooms Taxonomy for HIT associate programs which are to be launched in the 2017 curriculum. Faculty have conducted a labor-intensive gap analysis and course revisions are underway to meet the new competencies. 44

46 In November 2015, faculty held its Annual Incentive Luncheon for senior clinical students. The luncheon is to acknowledge the students for performance, professionalism, and attendance throughout their professional practice experiences. In December 2015, eight (8) students successfully graduated both the HIT Associate of Applied Science degree and the Medical Coding Specialist Certificate of Applied Science. The Healthcare Access Associate certificate program graduated its first two (2) students in the Spring of 2015 and both were successful in passing the Healthcare Access Associate national certification exam. Congratulations! Graduates of the HIT and Medical Coding Specialist programs were honored at the 2015 Annual Pinning Ceremony on December 10, We would like to thank Ms. Patty Harper, business and healthcare consultant and CEO of InQuiseek, LLC, who graciously served as our motivational speaker. The SUSLA HIT Program collaborated with NWLHIMA to co-host a series of Coding Round Table Workshops from June through October 2015 at the SUSLA Metro Campus. Coding topics included myocardial infarctions, hypertension, sepsis, pregnancies and deliveries, fractures, cardiovascular diagnoses and procedures. Participants were able to actively engage in code assignments utilizing the 3M coding software in the HIT Lab. Alpha Sigma Epsilon, the HIT student fraternity, participates in community service campaigns each year. In 2015, students and faculty participated in a National Night Out fund raiser and a Breast Cancer Awareness fund raiser. 45

47 I would like to take a moment to humbly recognize the SUSLA HIT faculty for the following accomplishments in 2015: Ms. May was promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure, Ms. Wells was the recipient of the Chancellor s Rising Star Award, Ms. Brittentine was welcomed back as a full-time instructor and has served as a presenter for ICD-10 training for the Nursing Home Association in Louisiana. Ms. Brittentine also plans to run for Faculty Senator for the Division of Allied Health in In closing, we always like to take the opportunity to express our gratitude and appreciation to the faculty and clinical site supervisors and staff for their dedication, commitment and collaborative efforts, which together provide students with a pathway to academic and professional success.
