2 CoAEMSP Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions 8301 Lakeview Parkway Suite Rowlett, TX ADMISSIONS PROCESS Students may enroll in the paramedic course only after being formally admitted to the program. To apply for admission they must meet the prerequisites and submit the completed application for student status. The application along with a course syllabus and reciprocity form can be found online at: The interview will be done by the medical director, EMS Chief, EMS Section Chief, Program Director, and Clinical Director PREREQUISITES The following are pre-requisites for admission into the program and verification must be submitted before the applicant can be considered for entrance into the program: Must be at least eighteen years old at the beginning of the course. Must have EMT certification. Must be a current member or employee of an ambulance service, work as an EMT in a hospital, or have received reciprocity from the state of SD if currently working in another state. You must have a SD EMT number before being accepted into the program. One year of patient care experience recommended in RCFD, or 3 years with services outside RCFD. Must have a copy of a current CPR card Must have a proof of your highest level of Education Immunization Records 2

3 Credits for experiential learning/transfer of credits The RCFD Paramedic Program recognizes those who have done previous Paramedic training, but those accepted into this program, will need to go through the entire program start to finish to ensure consistent material will be covered. Completion of this program will consist of evaluation of student s progress, completion of didactic, clinical and field internship rotations that include the proper number of hours and contacts fulfilled to meet the programs minimum standards. TUITION, FEES, REFUNDS Paramedic Total tuition and lab fees for RCFD Paramedic Program are $6,500 on or before the first day of the didactic phase program. Tuition includes classroom instruction, skills lab supplies, clinical fees, FISDAP, and professional liability insurance. If a student elects to attend an internship site outside the area, the student is responsible for all travel and living costs. In some, but not all areas, local fire departments are able to house students in their stations. The RCFD will work with all students in an attempt to find a field internship opportunity that will work for them.. Withdrawals If a student voluntarily leaves the program for any reason, refunds will as follows: A. Prior to classes beginning, or within the first five days of class, the student will refunded all tuition paid. B. All other withdrawals, will be at a pro-rated rate. Refund Schedule 1 All refunds owing will be made within Sixty (60) ninety (90) calendar days of the date of determination of student withdrawal. 2 If the RCFD cancels the Paramedic Program subsequent to a student s enrollment, the institution will refund all monies paid by the student. 3

4 CLINICAL REQUIREMENTS Clinical time has been arranged at Rapid City, SD, Rapid City Regional Hospital, Spearfish Regional Hospital, Sturgis Hospital and Fall River Hospital in Hot Springs. Field internship time has been arranged at The Rapid City Fire Department, Spearfish Ambulance Service, Hot Springs EMS, Sturgis Fire and EMS. Additional classroom, skills lab, clinical, or field internship time may be arranged on an individual student-by-student basis as needed during the course. These hours represent the MINIMUM time that will be spent on each subject area. For this reason the dates for course completion and National Registry testing are subject to some change. 5 PSYCHOMOTOR SKILLS The student must demonstrate the ability to safely administer medications. The student should safely, and while performing all steps of each procedure, properly administer medications at least 15 times to live patients. The student must demonstrate the ability to safely perform endotracheal intubation. The student should safely, and while performing all steps of each procedure, successfully intubate at least 10 live patients. The student must demonstrate the ability to safely gain venous access in all age group patients. The student should safely, and while performing all steps of each procedure, successfully access the venous circulation at least 25 times on live patients of various age groups. The student must demonstrate the ability to effectively ventilate unintubated patients of all age groups. The student should effectively, and while performing all steps of each procedure, ventilate at least 20 live patients of various age groups. AGES The student must demonstrate the ability to perform a comprehensive assessment on pediatric patients. The student should perform a comprehensive patient assessment on at least 30 (including 2 newborns, 2 infants, 2 toddlers, 2 preschool and 2 school age, 2 adolescent) pediatric patients. The student must demonstrate the ability to perform a compressive assessment on adult patients. The student should perform a comprehensive patient assessment on at least 50 adult patients. The student must demonstrate the ability to perform a comprehensive assessment on geriatric patients. The student should perform a comprehensive patient assessment on at least 30 geriatric patients. PATHOLOGIES The student must demonstrate the ability to perform a comprehensive assessment on obstetric patients. 5

6 The student should perform a comprehensive patient assessment on at least 10 obstetric patients. The student must demonstrate the ability to perform a comprehensive assessment on trauma patients. The student should perform a comprehensive patient assessment on at least 40 trauma patients. The student must demonstrate the ability to perform a comprehensive assessment on psychiatric patients. The student should perform a comprehensive patient assessment on at least 20 psychiatric patients. COMPLAINTS The student must demonstrate the ability to perform a comprehensive assessment, formulate and implement a treatment plan for patients with chest pain. The student should perform a comprehensive patient assessment, formulate and implement a treatment plan on at least 30 patients with chest pain. The student must demonstrate the ability to perform a comprehensive assessment, formulate and implement a treatment plan for patients with dyspnea/respiratory distress. The student should perform a comprehensive patient assessment, formulate and implement a treatment plan on at least 20 adult patients with dyspnea/respiratory distress. The student should perform a comprehensive patient assessment, formulate and implement a treatment plan on at least 8 pediatric patients (including infants, toddlers, and school age) with dyspnea/respiratory distress. The student must demonstrate the ability to perform a comprehensive assessment, formulate and implement a treatment plan for patients with syncope. The student should perform a comprehensive patient assessment, formulate and implement a treatment plan on at least 10 patients with syncope. The student must demonstrate the ability to perform a comprehensive assessment, formulate and implement a treatment plan for patients with abdominal complaints. The student should perform a comprehensive patient assessment, formulate and implement a treatment plan on at least 20 patients with abdominal complains (for example: abdominal pain, nausea/vomiting, GI bleeding, gynecological complaint, etc.) 6

7 The student must demonstrate the ability to perform a comprehensive assessment, formulate and implement a treatment plan for patients with altered mental status. The student should perform a comprehensive patient assessment, formulate and implement a treatment plan on at least 20 patients with altered mental status. TEAM LEADER SKILLS The student must demonstrate the ability to serve as a team leader in variety of prehospital emergency situations. The student should serve as the team leader for at least 50 ALS prehospital emergency responses. *You will be required to complete all clinical shifts. For example, if you have completed 400 hours of ride time and it is only 11am but the ambulance shift that you are doing runs 7am to 7pm you will need to stay until 7pm and finish out the shift. Clinical Area Hours Emergency 180 Pediatrics 24 OR 40 Dialysis 12* OB/NICU 24 IV 8 Cadaver Lab (Lions Eye Bank) * Ride Time 400 Totals 676 Dialysis rotations may be completed in the ER Cadaver lab is optional through the Lions Eye Bank and is available during a case of theirs. Documentation will be documented in FISDAP. 7
