2 Welcome to NHS Challenge enabling you to involve stakeholders in local health spending decisions What is it Quite simply, it s a board game played in teams. Each member of the team takes turns to throw a dice and move a counter around a board. The square you land on prompts the team to pick up the corrsponding real-life scenario card, giving the whole team an opportunity to discuss a health spending dilemma. g N OPINION PREVENTING ILL HEALTH OPINION For example, if you land on a square marked Policy you might discuss the merits of funding IVF treatments. Or you might land on Preventing ill Health and talk about what can be done to tackle childhood obesity. For each dilemma there is a spending decision to be made by the team. Agreement must be reached on whether to spend money on a particular aspect of health care and what are the consequences of doing so or not. PATIENTS AT THE CENTRE ON IN THE BLACK MONEY SAVED! 3 How to use it The game (or simulation) has already been used successfully by several Clinical Commissioning Groups in the North of England at public engagement events. Some have also used it as a staff training exercise and others have taken it into schools.

4 How useful has it been As a vehicle for involving the public and other stakeholders in decision making it is excellent. The feedback from the public is always positive and people have a great deal of fun debating the merits of decisions. For policy makers it is ideal for testing out ideas on policy in a safe environment where people will give you their honest opinions.
