3 Welcome Dear Student, Congratulations on being selected to the Higher Diploma in Mental Health Nursing. We would like to take this opportunity to extend a warm welcome to all of you. This is a very exciting time for mental health services in Ireland with this first Higher Diploma in Mental Health Nursing programme led by UCD in partnership with the HSE. While working in mental health nursing can be challenging, it is also very rewarding and very much in the forefront of public needs and expectations. The role of the mental health nurse has changed dramatically over the years and nowadays there is so much scope and potential for the nurse to develop his or her own unique career pathways. On this programme, it is acknowledged that each student brings valuable personal and professional experiences which will contribute to the development of knowledge and skills in mental health nursing. Throughout your journey of learning, there are many people within UCD and the HSE services who will be available to help and support you. Take all opportunities to utilise these resources as you advance towards qualification as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse. This handbook has been designed to highlight key information about the programme and to provide links to essential websites. 4 Higher Diploma in Mental Health Nursing Education Team Dr Gabrielle O Kelly, PhD, MPhil, MSc, RPN, RGN, RNT, Programme Director gabrielle.okelly@ucd.ie Gabrielle is a Registered Psychiatric Nurse and Registered General Nurse with many years of clinical practice. She holds an Advanced Certificate in Group Analytic Psychotherapy awarded by the Institute of Group Analysis, London and trained as a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist via an MSc in Psychotherapy at University College Dublin and an M Phil in Psychoanalytic Studies at Trinity College Dublin. Her PhD from Queen s University Belfast focused on the impact of nurses unconscious mental processes on their work with patients. She was awarded a HRB Clinical Fellowship in Gabrielle was Associate Dean of Undergraduate Nursing in the UCD School of Nursing Midwifery and Health Systems from 2010 to She is a registered nurse tutor and has been involved in nurse education since As an educator, she has a special interest in Cooperative Learning which she has studied over a number of years at the Cooperative Learning Institute, University of Minnesota. Dr Timothy Frawley, BNS, MEd., DGov., RPN Joint Clinical Lecturer Timothy.Frawley@ucd.ie Timothy Frawley is Associate Programme Director for the Higher Diploma in Mental Health Nursing employed in a joint lecturer position with the UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems and the St. John of God Community Mental Health Services. Dr Frawley has worked at a number of Dublin academic teaching hospitals before joining community services working in acute, rehabilitation and early intervention services. He holds a degree of Bachelor in Nursing Studies, a Master's in Education (Guidance and Counselling), and in 2014 he completed a Doctorate in Governance. He is former recipient of the National University of Ireland Dr. H.H. Stewart Scholarship in Nursing and the Daniel Murphy Memorial Gold Medal. He is a member of the Preliminary Proceedings Committee of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland. Deirdre MacNeill: BSc., B.A. (Hons), MSc., RPN, RGN, RM, Nurse Practice Development Coordinator deirdre.macneill@hse.ie Deirdre is Nurse Practice Development Coordinator for Community Healthcare Organisation 6 (CHO 6). From her previous position of Assistant Director of Nursing, Deirdre has extensive nurse management experience in a variety of care setting catering for adults with intellectual disabilities and mental health problems within community care, residential, Day Services and Approved Centre in St Josephs I.D. Services, Portrane. She was awarded a B.Sc. (Practice Development), a Post-Grad Diploma (Infection Prevention /Control) and an MSc. (Nursing) from the Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland. In addition, she holds a B.A (Hons)(Applied Social Studies)(Disability) - HETAC and a Higher Diploma in Mental Health Nursing from Dublin City University. Deirdre is the Vice Chairperson of the Mental Health Nurse Managers Association of Ireland, a UCD SNMHS Higher Diploma in Mental Health Nursing 2017

5 member of the Irish Institute of Mental Health Nurses, the Irish Nursing & Midwifery Practice Development Association and Infection Prevention Control Ireland. Johnny Thomson, BSc, MSc, Dip Intellectual Disability, RPN, Joint Lecturer Johnny has worked in Forensic Mental Health Services for the past 32 years. He completed a BSc in Psychiatric Nursing in UCD in 2006 and completed an MSc in Mental Health in TCD in Johnny completed the Post Graduate Diploma in Intellectual Disability Nursing in Athlone Institute of Technology in 201. He has worked in various positions in the National Forensic Mental Health Service in the Central Mental Hospital, Dundrum. His current role is Assistant Director of Nursing, with particular responsibility for the Forensic Mental Health/Intellectual Disability Service. Johnny is a tutor in the Therapeutic Management of Violence and Aggression training programme, and has a keen interest in strategies to reduce the usage of seclusion and restraint in mental health nursing care. He has previously held the position of Adjunct Lecturer in the UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems. Thomas Glynn, BSc, MSc, RPN, Clinical Placement Coordinator thomas.glynn@hse.ie / Thomas graduated in 2006 with a BSc in Psychiatric Nursing from NUI Galway and commenced his career working in the National Forensic Service in the Central Mental Hospital. He has experience working in addiction services in Vancouver as well as the special care unit in St. Patrick s University Hospital. Thomas spent the last 7 years working in Dublin South Central Mental Health Services working in the acute setting, community and psychiatry of later life teams. He completed his MSc in Psychosocial Interventions in Mental Healthcare in 201 with the University of Limerick specialising in mindfulness and nurse s understanding of mindfulness-based therapies. Thomas has recently joined the NPDU as a CPC and is a key member of an evolving and dynamic team. His current work includes supporting students undertaking the Higher Diploma in collaboration with UCD along with other nurse practice and policy development activities. Preeti John, BSc, MSc (CP), MSc Mental Health, RPN, RGN, Clinical Placement Coordinator preeti.john@hse.ie / Preeti has extensive nursing experience in both clinical settings and in nurse education. Preeti was awarded an MSc in Nursing Clinical Practice from UCD in 2013 and MSc in Psychiatric Nursing from Bharati Vidypeeth College of Nursing, Pune, India in 200. Preeti has special affinity in recovery in mental health nursing and has submitted her thesis titled Recovery oriented approach among mental health nurses in Ireland as part of her MSc. in Clinical Practice in UCD in Preeti has worked as a Nurse Tutor and Clinical Supervisor for both undergraduate and post graduate nursing students in India. 6 Jonathan Durning, BSc, MSc, RPN, RGN, RNT Joint Clinical Tutor Mental Health Nursing Jonathan currently works in the National Forensic Mental Health Service based at Dundrum in practice development. He graduated from Letterkenny Institute of Technology, in partnership with Donegal Mental Health Service, with a BSc (Hons) in Psychiatric Nursing in 2006, completed an MSc (Clinical Heath Science Education) at Trinity College Dublin in 2011 and a BNS in Adult Nursing at Edinburgh Napier in He has extensive working and teaching experience across acute and long term enduring mental health, community care, forensic mental health and care of the older person. He has acted as Nurse Lecturer over the past three years with Letterkenny Institute of Technology and continues to deliver guest lectures within the institute. Clare Flanagan, BSc, MSc, RPN, Joint Clinical Tutor Mental Health Nursing clare.flanagan@ucd.ie Clare graduated with a Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing from DCU and St Ita s Hospital, Portrane in She has worked as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse in acute psychiatry in both Ireland and Australia and is currently working as a Community Mental Health Nurse/ Clinical Nurse Specialist in Psychiatry of Old Age in St Vincent s University Hospital. Clare completed a BSc in Nursing in the Royal College of Surgeons in 2003, a Post Graduate Diploma in Care of Older People in 2010 and an MSc in Nursing Clinical Practice in UCD in Clare facilitates the National Dementia Training Programme within CHO 6. Clare was a member of the Living Well with Dementia consortium, one of four successful demonstration sites nationally for the first Genio Dementia Project. She has a special interest in community services for older people with mental health difficulties and dementia. She strongly believes in the continued development of interpersonal skills in mental health nursing and has recognised over the years how the individual approach of nurses and other clinicians impacts on patient outcome and recovery. 8 UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems Mission Statement The mission of the School is to prepare nurses, midwives and other professionals to promote and protect health, wellbeing and dignity across the lifespan through skilled, ethical and careful practice based on best evidence and prudent judgement, and to develop and disseminate disciplinary knowledge through research and scholarship. Higher Diploma in Mental Health Nursing Programme Outcomes The post-registration Higher Diploma in Mental Health Nursing is an intense twelve-month programme leading to registration as a Psychiatric Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI). As a Level 8 course, the programme represents a challenging yet rewarding path to becoming a mental health nurse. Regular assessment will help students to keep abreast of the new knowledge, skills and competencies required for success. This exciting Higher Diploma prepares you to meet the mental health needs of individuals and their families in the 21st century. You will learn to engage with those experiencing mental distress or illness, as well as their families, in a positive and collaborative way, empowering them to cope and recover. The nursing graduates of the Higher Diploma in Mental Health Nursing will: Demonstrate the acquisition of theoretical principles, national and international frameworks, policies and therapeutic modalities underpinning mental health nursing. Utilise their acquired knowledge to responsibly deliver high quality, skillful, safe, legal and accountable care to clients. Be able to engage in meaningful, effective, therapeutic and person-centered communication with recipients of mental health care in a range of settings. Engage in respectful and ethical collaborative practice with clients and with colleagues of all disciplines. Continuously develop learning, including self-awareness, as a necessary process in the context of their professional and personal self-development, self-care, resilience and the development of professional scholarship. Apply evidence from the critical appraisal of research to deliver evidence based practice in mental health nursing care. 10 Attendance Strategy Students are required to attend all lectures and clinical modules to meet the UCD and NMBI standards in order to graduate with a Higher Diploma in Mental Health Nursing. A record of attendance is maintained for each individual placement and all absenteeism will be monitored. Clinical time must be completed in full before students are signed off as having fulfilled the programme requirements. In addition, HSE Sick Leave Policy and National Guidelines are to be followed. Students need to make themselves familiar with the attendance policy of their allocated placement. Where a student is unable to attend for duty they must contact the clinical nurse managers of the relevant unit or centre, the CPCs, and mental health nursing administration/ ADON in the sponsoring CHO centre (see contact numbers on page 18). Accumulation of days-off in block periods is not acceptable for educational reasons. All time owing will be repaid at the end of the programme. Annual leave days may not be used to repay time owed. Annual Leave Entitlement Students will be entitled to a total of 24 (twenty four) days annual leave in respect of the calendar year, starting on the first day the course commencing 16 th January, The annual leave year will run from the 16 th January 2017 to the 1 th January, All annual leave must be taken over the 12 month period as allocated. Four weeks of annual leave is fixed throughout the year. Annual leave (4 days) outside of this dedicated time may be taken as single days during core placements only, in accordance with service need with the agreement of the Clinical Nurse Manager (CNM) and the CPCs for Higher Diploma must be informed. Reporting Relationships The Higher Diploma student is accountable on clinical matters to the CNM2 and preceptor. He or she is professionally accountable to the Area Director of Nursing of the sponsoring agency and also to the Nurse Practice Development Coordinator for the Higher Diploma. Assessment Strategy Theoretical and clinical assessment is directly linked to programme outcomes. There is continuous assessment across the programme linking theory to practice. Portfolio work carried out during clinical placements is part of the assessment of theoretical modules. All assignments are submitted online to Blackboard. The clinical assessment tool for the Higher Diploma in Mental Health Nursing is the Domains of Competence Assessment Tool (DoCAT ). Presentation of Domains of Competence Assessment Tool The Domains of Competence Assessment Tool is presented to the personal tutors on return to UCD at commencement of theory blocks. A copy of the Record of Attendance sheet is to be photocopied and given to the personal tutor at this meeting. These photocopied records are given to and kept by the Nurse Practice Development Coordinator for the purpose of meeting NMBI Standards and Requirements. 11 Clinical Modules Students will experience a variety of placements with site specific learning outcomes. While on placement students will follow the roster of the designated clinical area. Clinical environments present varied learning experiences and students are encouraged to avail of these learning opportunities to maximize and refine clinical skills. Higher Diploma students must take responsibility for directing their own education through interaction with their preceptor and other staff. It is important that each Higher Diploma nursing student adheres to the NMBI Scope of Nursing and Midwifery Practice Framework (201) and takes responsibility for his or her actions. Higher Diploma students form part of the staff compliment while on core placements and are supernumerary whilst on specialist placements. On all clinical placements, documentation, including medication records must be countersigned by a Registered Psychiatric Nurse. There are 36 weeks of clinical placement within the Higher Diploma in Mental Health Nursing. There is no night duty or protected reflective time. On commencement of the programme, students will receive their clinical placement allocations for the year. Students are advised to contact the clinical sites in the week prior to commencement of placement regarding local uniform policy, rosters, parking and access to sites. Mandatory and statutory training will be scheduled prior to commencement of clinical placements. Progression on Clinical Placements Students undertaking the Higher Diploma in Mental Health Nursing are entitled to two attempts in clinical placements and are then ineligible to continue in the nursing programme. Repeat placements are at the end of the programme. Students who require a subsequent third attempt may apply to the Programme Board. This subsequent attempt will be at the discretion of the Programme Board. Meeting Schedule for Clinical Assessment During each clinical placement, three formal meetings will take place with the Higher Diploma student and their preceptor or co-preceptor. The initial meeting will focus on the student s learning needs and goals and potential learning opportunities will be identified. At the initial meeting, a date will be agreed to conduct the intermediate meeting as this is a critical point of the assessment process. The focus of the intermediate meeting will identify whether the student is achieving competencies and linking theory to practice. Any issues or concerns need to be addressed during the intermediate meeting and any areas for improvement recorded with related learning plan in the Intermediate Learning Plan page in the DoCAT. The Higher Diploma student and his or her preceptor is encouraged to use the support of their designated CPCs and Clinical Tutors throughout the clinical placement. The final meeting and assessment takes place in final week of UCD SNMHS Higher Diploma in Mental Health Nursing

12 the placement and the student is deemed to either pass or fail. In the event of Higher Diploma student having difficulties meeting standards during a clinical placement, please refer to the UCD Difficulties Meeting Standards Protocol (Appendix 2 in DoCAT). Preceptorship Preceptorship in nursing is a one-to-one educational relationship between a registered nurse and a nursing student for the purpose of clinical practice learning and development. The Clinical Nurse Manager is responsible for preceptor and co-preceptor allocation upon commencement of each placement. As the student progresses through his or her placements and programme, supervision may gradually move from direct supervision to indirect and distant supervision as appropriate. As per Domain One Professional and Ethical Practice, the student must determine his or her own scope of practice using the NMBI Scope of Nursing and Midwifery Practice Framework. The Higher Diploma nursing student does not work in isolation or be placed in or delegated situations where he/she may be required to function beyond his/her level of educational preparation, competence and scope of practice. Candidate Registration Students shall apply to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland to have their names entered on the Candidate Register on commencement of the Higher Diploma programme. Mechanism for temporary interruption A student seeking a temporary interruption on the programme i.e., maternity leave, sick leave, parental, compassionate and special leave, must request/ notify the sponsoring area Director of Nursing or delegate and the Dean and Head of UCD School of Nursing Midwifery and Health Systems. 13 Notification of withdrawal To withdraw officially from this programme, the student must return his/her student card and notify the following personnel in writing: Head of UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Science Programme director, School of Nursing Midwifery and Health Science, UCD Sponsoring Area Director of Nursing Nurse Practice Development Coordinator of HDip programme. Educational Technology A variety of methods of educational technologies will be utlised during this programme and students are encouraged to avail of the support of the educational technologist within the UCD School of Nursing Midwifery and Health Systems.
