1 First Aid Policy Policy Approved June 2016 Date for revision June 2017 Reviewed by M Perry Guide to the Law First Aid Policy Aims Despite the best precautions and the attention given to health and safety, accidents do happen and children do become ill. First aid can save lives and prevent minor injuries becoming major ones. The aim of this policy is to provide a framework to ensure that any persons injured whilst on school premises or on school visits or other school activities, whether they are staff, pupils, visitors or other members of the public, receive the quickest, most effective care and attention. This policy has been written with guidance taken from Department of Education 2014, Health and Safety: Advice on legal duties and powers, Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage, Department of Education 2014 and Supporting Pupils at School with Medical Conditions, Department of Education, The medical care and welfare of students is overseen by the School Nurse. The school Nurse will: Ensure she receives sufficient training, to be competent in undertaking her tasks. Undertake a risk assessment of the schools first aid needs alongside the Facilities Manager. Maintain medical records, in particular for pupils with specific medical conditions, such as asthma, epilepsy, diabetes or allergies. She will ensure that any arrangements necessary for these pupils are put in place and that appropriate staff are informed. Ensure that a sufficient number of staff are first aid trained. Ensure that a first aider is present at all times when pupils are on site. Devise first aid procedures to ensure that the school provides reasonable first aid care. Liaise with senior staff to ensure that staff receive sufficient training in first aid. Ensure that first aid notices are displayed in a prominent position and regularly updated to inform staff and pupils of first aid procedures Be responsible for the security, quantity and quality of the first aid equipment. Liaise with the bursar about reporting accidents.

2 Keep a record of all first aid administered to pupils, this record will include: o Date, time and place of accident. o Name of injured or ill person. o What happened to the person immediately afterwards. o Name and signature of first aider. Ensure that parents are informed as quickly as reasonably possible about any significant injury or illness to pupils. First Aiders First aiders are volunteer members of staff who should Administer first aid to pupils, staff and visitors to an acceptable standard. Undertake such training, including refresher training, as necessary to remain competent in their skills. Comply with school first aid procedures. The current list of first aiders can be found in appendix 1 In our EYFS setting, there must be members of staff with a paediatric First Aid qualification, which needs to be renewed every three years Staff All staff, including those without first aid training should ensure: That pupils are sent to the school nurse or a qualified first aider if there is reasonable concern about an illness or injury; safety is paramount at all times That pupils are aware of first aid procedures. In EYFS, Staff must seek medical advice if they are taking medication which may affect their ability to care for children, and any staff medication must be securely stored at all times. In EYFS, at least one person with a current paediatric first aid certificate must be on the premises at all times when children are present and accompanying children on outings.

3 First Aid Kits First Aid kits are located at various points around the school. These are listed in Appendix 2. If used, the School Nurse should be informed. The nurse will carry out monthly checks of the first aid boxes and replenish them as required (Appendix 3). Full medical supplies are available from the medical room on both sites. First aid kits for trips are available from the medical room; these should be returned as soon as possible after the trip to be replenished Illness Students may only go to the medical room with permission from a member of staff. Pupils should be deterred from going if their ailment appears trivial. If a student is so unwell that she needs to go home, parents will be contacted by the school (Leadership Team, Pastoral Leaders or School Nurse) and not by the student herself. Students who are unwell will not be permitted to go home on their own and must be collected by a parent or nominated adult In the case of serious injury or illness the ambulance service will be called to take the student to hospital accompanied by a responsible adult. The parents will be contacted and asked to go to the hospital to meet their child. If in any doubt call 999 and they will give advice. Be prepared to answer questions such as an outline of the incident, the patient s name and age, whether the patient is unconscious and your location. Concussion The school nurse, sports staff and premises managers have all undertaken RFU (Rugby Football Union) training to manage concussion and head injuries, primarily from sport. Post accident / illness arrangements The caretakers at the Prep site and Senior site will be informed immediately in the event of a spillage of body fluids (blood, vomit, urine) to enable the area to be cleaned thoroughly and disinfected. There are spills cleaning kits available at Nursery or from the caretakers. Staff in the Nursery have also undertaken training in infection control and retain responsibility for hazardous spillages on the Nursery site.

4 Medical Records/Accident forms Medical records will be kept of all treatment given. Similarly all accidents will be recorded on an accident report form. Accident report forms will be sent to the school nurse. School will inform parents of any significant accident or injury sustained by the child and any treatment given on the same day or as soon as reasonably practicable after the event. This will be by way of a slip of paper and it is the pupils responsibility to pass this onto the parent. All accidents involving staff must be recorded in the Accident book. More serious accidents will be dealt with by the school nurse and the Facilities Manager in conjunction with the H&S officer at the Whitgift Foundation and reported to RIDDOR as necessary. Arrangements for pupils with particular medical conditions It is the parental responsibility to let the school know, as soon as possible of any special medical conditions; including, but not limited to: asthma, epilepsy, allergies, that affect their child. Spare inhalers and medication will be held by the school nurse. Senior school pupils should carry inhalers, Auto-Injectors and allergy medications themselves. Prep and Nursery pupils medication will be held securely in the school office or medical room. The school has arrangements for hazardous waste and sharps collections. If a child needs short term medication to be given in school, it should be discussed with the school nurse/office and a medication permission form should be filled in; these can be found on the parent portal or obtained from the office. Consent for any non-prescribed medication should be gained from the parent/guardian before being administered and recorded stating the time it was given. This consent for pupils under 16 year olds will be obtained by way of annual consent collected on the Student Data Collection Sheets. Sun Cream It is expected that children will be brought to school with long acting cream applied for the day. We are unable to apply cream. Parents should ensure that their child is adequately protected from the sun by means of sun cream, suitable clothing and head wear. For staff working outside, PPE will be provided after a risk assessment has been carried out. It remains the responsibility of the staff to make known any allergies before applying cream as part of their PPE.

5 School Trips When students go on school trips, it is essential that parents provide full details of any medication needed for their child including when they last had their medication and provide them in their original packaging. The school nurse will provide a list of pupils with medical conditions to the trip leader, along with details of any medication required. Records must be kept of medication given and any incidents occurring on a school trip, the details should be handed to the school office on return to school. 10 Use instructions for Urine and Vomit Spill Pack: 1. Always wear gloves and apron 2. Sprinkle granules all over the spill until all the moisture is completely absorbed. Leave for seconds. 3. Open Yellow hazardous waste bag. 4. Collect spill and granules mixture using the scoop provided and scraper. Discard all into the yellow bag. 5. Disinfect the area of the spill as per directions. 6. Place all materials including apron and finally gloves into the yellow waste bag and tie securely. This should then be disposed of as per policy.
