Evidenced based principles of nursing care for adults with common acute and chronic health problems are covered. This course builds on knowledge gained in prerequisite courses and is the first of three medical surgical nursing courses. The title of this course was previously Acute Care Nursing I. Recognize and apply key concepts from previous prerequisite and fundamental nursing courses relating to core nursing care of patients in the following areas: principles for providing a safe and effective care environment; principles of health promotion; principles for maintaining patient psychosocial integrity; and principles for promoting patient physiological integrity. 2. Identify significant patient assessment data and diagnostic findings, key nursing diagnoses, prioritized collaborative nursing interventions, and desired patient outcomes for fluid and electrolyte and acidbase imbalances, and apply this knowledge to patient situations. 3. Recognize significant patient assessment data and diagnostic findings, key nursing diagnoses, chronic neurosensory disorders: delirium vs. dementia, Alzheimer's disease, hearing and visual disorders and then apply this knowledge to patient situations. 4. Recognize significant patient assessment data and diagnostic findings, key nursing diagnoses,

4 chronic disorders affecting oxygenation: rhinitis/sinusitis, pneumonia, asthma; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; and apply this knowledge to patient situations. 5. Identify significant patient assessment data and diagnostic findings, key nursing diagnoses, prioritized collaborative nursing interventions, and desired patient outcomes for common acute and chronic disorders affecting urinary elimination: infections of the urinary and renal systems; renal calculi; voiding disorders, and BPH; and apply this knowledge to patient situations. 6. Recognize significant patient assessment data and diagnostic findings, key nursing diagnoses, prioritized collaborative nursing interventions, and desired patient outcomes for common and chronic disorders affecting regulation and metabolism: hyperthyroidism; hypothyroidism; and diabetes mellitus, and apply this knowledge to patient situations. 7. Recognize significant patient assessment data and diagnostic findings, key nursing diagnoses, prioritized collaborative nursing interventions, and desired patient outcomes for common blood disorders affecting tissue perfusion: anemias; and apply this knowledge to patient situations. 8. Recognize significant patient assessment data and diagnostic findings, key nursing diagnoses, chronic disorders affecting cardiac output and tissue perfusion: HTN, peripheral vascular diseases (DVT, amputations), and congestive heart failure and apply this knowledge to patient situations. 9. Identify significant patient assessment data and diagnostic findings, key nursing diagnoses, prioritized collaborative nursing interventions, and desired patient outcomes for common acute and chronic disorders affecting mobility: osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, bone fractures; and apply this knowledge to patient situations. 10. Recognize significant patient assessment data and diagnostic findings, key nursing diagnoses, prioritized collaborative nursing interventions, and desired patient outcomes during the perioperative experience. 11. Apply the theoretical concepts of leadership, management and prioritization of patient care to the delivery of nursing care in various medical surgical health care settings.
