1 Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust Job Description Haematology Job Title: Grade: A4C Band 3 (Point 7) Directorate: Pathology Department: Haematology Reports to: BMS staff and section senior Professionally Consultant Head of Department Accountable to: Managerially Head BMS Accountable to Date: June 2008 Job purpose: The post holder is expected to work as part of a team in the Transfusion section of the Haematology Laboratory. After training they will be required to carry out basic laboratory procedures and provide support to the Biomedical Scientists to ensure the cold chain for the hospital transfusion laboratory starts from the receipt of the blood from the blood centre to the time the unit is transfused or otherwise disposed of. The post holder will at all times promote GDP (Good Distribution Practice) which requires us to ensure that storage conditions are observed at all times, including during transportation Concentration and attention to detail are essential to these processes and form the greater part of the working day. The post holder will offer a helpful and professional service to all visitors and telephone callers and will assist the Department of Haematology in the provision of a high quality service.

2 Key Service Delivery responsibilities 1. Technical a. Ensure temperature monitoring quality system is operating within designated limits. b. Follows the defined procedure for responding to alarms, and contingency arrangements for dealing with stock in prolonged alarm situations. c. To liaise with external contractors to ensure that chart recorders, digital readout, max/min thermometer, central monitoring system, have a current calibration certificate traceable to National Standards. d. Ensure a robust Paperwork/electronic storage mechanism for records are kept for 30 years. e. Ensure alarm testing, routine maintenance and regular cleaning of fridges is carried out. f. Plan and organise his/her daily work activities in the transfusion laboratory. g. De reserving previously issued blood products to patients h. Undertake daily blood stock-takes. i. To perform temperature mapping of all refrigeration units on an annual basis. j. To train RWHT staff in the principles of GDP. k. To reconcile the full traceability of products issued from the transfusion laboratory to ensure 100% compliance with BSQR Training Appropriate training will be given where duties involve: - lifting and manual handling - handling patient specimens - handling pathological material - Good Distribution Practice (GDP) - Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) - Blood Safety & Quality Regulations (BSQR)

3 3. Laboratory Informatics a. Training will be given for use of laboratory information Management systems as necessary. b. Input of patient data and retrieval of patient s data will be required. c. Enters fate of donation data onto the laboratory LIS following laboratory authorised procedures. d. Data entry of patient demographics onto the laboratory LIS. 4. Administrative a. Communication with colleagues and medical staff to convey in information which may include patient s data of a complex and sensitive nature. b. Required to follow written protocols, comment and assist in development and implementation of protocols or new equipment. c. Understanding and compliance with Standard Operating Procedures for the laboratory areas. d. Participate in audit/surveys of the area of work as they arise. e. To assist in specimen reception, sorting and labelling specimens and entering request data, as required. f. Answer telephone enquiries and issue verbal results if required. This data may be complex and sensitive. g. Required to investigate and resolve mislabeling problems associated with patient samples. h. To undertake work file management to ensure that all data is reported within the agreed turnaround time. 5. General a. To observe and adhere to local and national Health and Safety policies. b. To keep the workplace and workbenches clean and tidy. c. To maintain good work relations with all members of staff, and to promote effective teamwork. d. To treat everyone associated with the trust with courtesy and respect.

4 e. To ensure compliance with all local and national standards of work practice e.g. Clinical Pathology Accreditation (UK). f. To maintain and promote the professional image of the Department of Haematology. g. The post holder will be required to take part in an Annual Review of KSF outline and Personal Development Plans h. The post holder may be required to undertake any other duties that are commensurate with the post and grade and have been discussed with the post holder. 6. Health and Safety Responsibilities a. To take appropriate action if there is a spillage of body fluids in order to minimise the risk to staff and the public. b. To observe and adhere to local and national health and safety policies. 7. Infection Prevention and Control All Trust employees are required to comply with Infection Prevention and Control Policies, Protocols and Practices including: a. Maintain a current knowledge of infection prevention and control practices and policies relevant to the position through attending annual mandatory updates and continuing professional development/role specific training. b. Perform role specific duties in accordance with the Trust infection prevention and control policies, protocols and practices (including decontamination of equipment and the environment). c. Take part in Trust infection prevention initiatives as required. d. Challenge and report failures in infection prevention practices as appropriate (e.g. using the trust incident reporting system). 8. Additional duties and responsibilities a. Monitor and follow up all processes involved in the delivery and administration of the haemophilia products as defined in statutory instrument number 50.

5 b. Will include data management, reporting of adverse incidents and quality assurance. c. Will receive copy of delivery notes of products issued to patients homes. d. Will enter information onto TD Blood Bank system for the relevant patients. e. Will collate treatment sheets to ensure information of deliveries and usage match up. f. Will ensure adequate stock is maintained in laboratory for emergency issue. 9. Performance Criteria The performance of the post holder will be continually assessed and formally reviewed annually. Key elements of this process will be to show a contribution to the corporate objectives of the laboratory and the Trust. Terms and Conditions of Service The Terms and Conditions of Service are those that are found in the Agenda for Change NHS Terms and Conditions of service handbook (Version 2, August 2007, updated April 2008). All employees must adhere to and perpetuate Trust policies and procedures and the department s Standard Operating Procedures and Policies. The Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) requires the employers and employees to take certain measures to promote Health and Safety at work. Every employee has a duty while at work to take reasonable care for the health and safety of his/herself and of other persons who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work. The job description and associated responsibilities may be subject to periodic review and amendment in the light of changes in management arrangements, changes in the provision of laboratory services within the Trust, or as a result of two-way discussions in staff development, KSF or performance review programmes. There is a voluntary superannuation scheme which is 6% of gross salary. Any offer of employment is subject to satisfactory medical and CRB clearance. This Trust operates a No Smoking Policy.

6 Person Specification for Higher Medical Laboratory Assistant (Band 3) Criteria Qualifications Must have a good general education and must be numerate and literate with good command of spoken and written English Vocational NVQ level 3 or equivalent Experience and Skills Working as a member of a team Experience in clinical audit Ability to work systematically and under pressure in a busy environment Good understanding of Transfusion Medicine techniques/able to perform some basic tasks under supervision. Accuracy and attention to detail Basic understanding of Quality control/assurance Experience of Microsoft excel, access and word Understands laboratory Health and Safety regulations Ability to communicate appropriately and professionally to staff/people at different levels Basic understanding of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Good Distribution Practice (GDP) and the Blood Safety & Quality Regulations 2005 Communication Skills Have good communication skills Ability to communicate technical information and results with other health professionals.
