1 King Khalid University Fundamentals of Nursing 1 Course Syllabus Nursing Department Course Title: Fundamentals of Nursing 1 Course Number: NURS 211 Credit Hours: 6 (3+3) Actual Credit Hours: 12(3+9) Prerequisite: --- Concurrent: Placement: Third Course Description: This course aims at providing the students with the basic principles and various concepts of nursing profession. The course is considered as an introductory course for other nursing courses. It includes theories of wellness and illness, and often physiological, psychological, emotional, and social concepts necessary to the delivery of holistic nursing care through the utilization of nursing process. Students will be introduced to the concepts of protection, prevention and promotion of clients to reach an optimal level of health throughout the lifespan. Ethical and legal situations in nursing practice, research, communication, as well as needs for personal growth and self-awareness will be also included. This course is the first clinical course designed to expose students to nursing as a field of practice. Through providing students with the laboratory and hospital guided experiences, they are expected to perform and master certain psychomotor skills such as basic hygiene, vital signs, nutrition, oxygenation, infection control, medication and charting and documentation. The practice of this course covers basic nursing procedures, recording and reporting using actual hospital documented sheets. These basic introductory skills are presented according to the functional health patterns that are in parallel with the knowledge 1

2 provided for students in the theory courses. and through the application of the nursing process Course Objectives At the end of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Identify the four core elements of nursing including practice, education, research, and management. 2. Comprehend main aspects and modalities regarding the holistic care of individuals, families, and community through health protection, prevention, and promotion. 3. Analyze the components of nursing process as a fundamental conceptual framework for nursing care. 4. Be introduced to the main nursing concepts related to health, illness and wellness. 5. Identify elements of comprehensive health assessment through accurate information gathering process. 6. Determine the basic nursing care components in clinical settings with consideration of hazard prevention and safety promotion measures. 7. Identify the physiological, psychosocial, and spiritual aspects (human responses) as essential parts of holistic nursing care. 8. Demonstrate safe, private, ethnical, and professional skillful performance of basic skills related to nursing procedures. 9. Identify the general purpose for demonstrating each procedure. 10. Identify and prepare relevant equipment for each procedure. Course Contents and outline Unit I: The Nature of Nursing History and contemporary factors influencing nursing development. History of nursing (scope of nursing, nurses' role, and scope of nursing and nursing values and attitudes). Professionalization. Definition of nursing theory, concept, and conceptual framework. Nursing organizations. Nursing education Nursing research. 2

3 Unit II: Contemporary Health Care Providers of health care. Factors affecting health care delivery Models for the delivery of nursing. Community based nursing. Continuity of care. Health promotion (Definition, Types, and Models). Nurse s role in health promotion. Unit III: Health beliefs and practices Concept of health, wellness, and wellbeing. Variables influencing health status beliefs, and practices. Illness and disease. Individual, family, and community health. Concept of holism and holistic nursing. Spiritual definition; spiritual health and the nursing process. Unit IV: The Nursing Process Overview of nursing process. Assessment (Collection data methods, organizing, Validating and documenting data). The diagnostic process and NANDA nursing diagnoses. Formulating diagnostic statements. The planning processes and types of planning. Implementing and evaluating. Documentation systems with ethical and legal considerations. Unit V: Integral Aspect of Nursing Caring and comforting. Main learning theories and the factors that influencing learning. Contrast the nursing process and the teaching process. Essential aspects of a teaching plan. Advantages and disadvantages of selected teaching strategies. Communication process and influencing factors. Differences between verbal and non-verbal communication. Leadership, management and the differences between formal and informal leaders. 3

Lab. training about Aseptic techniques o Medical hand washing o Surgical hand washing o Establishing and maintaining a sterile field and isolation technique o Donning and removing sterile gloves (open method). o Donning and removing sterile gown and sterile gloves (closed method). Lab. training about history taking and nursing process o Patient admission o Patient discharge o Transfer of patient o Preparation for physical assessment o Communication and filling nursing process o Recording and reporting Lab. training about skin integrity and wound care o Sterile dressing o Bandaging o Removing of surgical stitches o Wound irrigation o Preventing pressure sores Lab. training about vital signs o Assessing body temperature using a mercury thermometer. o Assessing a peripheral pulse o Assessing apical pulse o Assessing apical radial pulse o Assessing respiration. o Assessing blood pressure. o Hot and cold applications Lab. training about medication preparation and administration o Preparation of the medication tray o Using medication cards o Ensuring medication seven's rights o Administering oral, Intramuscular, Intradermal, and Subcutaneous medications o Topical medication. o Starting and monitoring I.V. infusion. o Changing and discontinuing I.V infusion. Lab. training about elimination o Offering and removing bed-pan and urinal o Administering an enema o Intake & output charting o Collecting specimen o Catheter care Lab. training about eating and drinking (Nutrition) o Feeding the patient 5

6 o Inserting and removing NGT o Irrigating NGT o Gastric gavage o Gastric Lavage Lab. training about oxygenation o Administering O 2 by nasal cannula, facemask, and head tent. o Nebulizer inhalation o Coughing and breathing exercise. Teaching Strategies: Lectures Audio-visual aids Active participation of the students Discussion and group activities Video tapes. Class discussion. Lab. training (Demonstration & Re-demonstration.) Group activities. Clinical training (second semester) Rules and Regulations in Nursing Skill Labs. Food and beverages are not permitted in the lab areas. Overcoats and other peripheral items should not be brought into the lab areas. Each student has to comply with nursing dress code. Each student should bring his own scissor, meter, stethoscope, and torch, red and blue pen. Student has to have her nametag. Self-learning make up days will be planned with the instructor to compensate the missed labs for the excused students.
