The State of North Carolina is committed to developing a statewide health information exchange that meets the needs of health care providers for their patients. Lessons Learned A successful and sustainable HIE needs: Neutral, collaborative forum in which stakeholders can engage in conversations about health care exchange, Clear and constant communication, Transparency of planning and operations, Highest security standards, Provide value beyond what hospitals and providers are already doing, and Be cost-effective. 3
