By the end of the conference, the attendees will be able to: Guide programs, policies, and/or legislation to advocate for health equity in communities. Create partnerships and capacity to advance health equity in your community. Identify strategies to implement health equity in your health department plans (strategic plan, CHIP, etc.) Apply assessment and evaluation methods to identify and address social determinants of health in your community. Apply historical lessons related to health equity. Develop self-awareness of potential bias and how it could impact your practice. 4 PRE-CONFERENCE Tuesday, August 2 1:00 4:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required Addressing Implicit Bias in Public Health and Client Care Jeff Stone, PhD - University of Arizona The purpose of this workshop is to introduce the topic of implicit bias. In order to treat all clients fairly and effectively, it is important to understand how implicit biases occur, and what you can do to reduce them. In this workshop, we will first review the causes and consequences of implicit bias in public health and healthcare, experience first-hand what implicit bias feels like, and then discuss and practice strategies you can use to reduce implicit bias when interacting with clients. Objectives: Define and distinguish between the social cognitive components of intergroup bias: prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination. Provide examples of each in client care. Describe the difference between explicit and implicit intergroup bias in client care. Describe how implicit bias affects diagnosis/treatment decisions and interactions with clients. Describe how to use the following strategies for reducing implicit bias: activating egalitarian goals; searching for common identity and counter-stereotypic information; perspective taking; using implementation intentions to plan for your community. 4

Hotel Information A block of rooms has been reserved at the Holiday Inn Hotel and Convention Center at a rate of $82 single occupancy. To guarantee this rate, reservations must be made by July 1, To make reservations, call the Holiday Inn Hotel and Convention Center at or HOLIDAY and request the Wisconsin Public Health Nursing Conference room block code PHN. You must furnish documentation at check-in when registering for tax exemption. Registration Policies Registration fee includes plenary and breakout sessions, access to conference materials (handouts will be posted online for attendees to retrieve), breakfast, breaks and lunch. Registration must be received by July 1, 2016, to be guaranteed conference materials. Cancellation Policy All cancellations must be received by July 1, A $25 administrative fee will be deducted from your refund. No refunds will be made for cancellations received or faxed after July 1. Refunds will not be given for no-shows. Continuing Education CHES Credits Application has been made to the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. (NCHEC) for CHES Category 1 continuing education contact hours (CECH).
