Can you please advise what positive action measures you have put in place, if any, for Modern Apprentices from disability, ethnic minority and LGBT groups? 2. Please can you provide me with the percentage of Modern Apprentices who have provided information by protected characteristic on Equality Monitoring Forms at the recruitment stage? 3. Could you please advise any steps you are taking to encourage disclosure of protected characteristics at the recruitment stage? Mental Health Support 1. Can you please advise what mental health support your organisation currently has in place for staff when required e.g. provision of therapies, employee assistance programmes etc? Employment Initiatives 1. Can you please advise what employment initiatives your organisation offers, if any, e.g. school employability workshops to young people in gaining employment at your organisation and any feedback/success stories from these workshops? 2. Further to the above, can you please provide details of any initiatives in your workplace to support people with disabilities in gaining employment Response Disclosure of Protected Characteristics 1. NHS Tayside is fully committed to the 2010 Equality Act and to ensuring that all staff are supported in Disclosure of protected characteristics. 2. Regarding percentage of Modern Apprentices who provided information by protected characteristics. Figures over the last 3 years have been reviewed, and of the 33 apprentices in this time period, 2 declined to give information and 31 provided information % provided 6.06% declined 3. NHS Tayside is proud to be a Disability Confident Employer and operates the Guaranteed Interview Scheme for applicants who meet the minimum criteria for a job vacancy and who consider they have a disability. 2 When invited to attend for interview, the applicant is asked if there are any necessary requirements to facilitate ease of interview e.g. induction loop British Sign Language (BSL) signer or mobility access If applicants choose to inform NHS Tayside of a disability, or they expect some difficulty during the recruitment and selection process because of a disability, NHS Tayside will investigate reasonable adjustments to the working environment or arrangements that could overcome the barriers faced by those applicants at interview and in the workplace. Mental Health Support The Live Positive toolkit has been developed as part of NHS Tayside s approach to assessing and managing work related stress. It contains guidance and advice for both staff and managers on the causes, symptoms, assessment and management of stress and stress related illness. The toolkit also links to all of the relevant NHS Tayside Stress Risk Assessment Documentation as well as other websites related to stress management, mental health and wellbeing." The NHS Tayside website also has useful information and contact addresses for staff and the public regarding different aspects of health and wellbeing. NHS Tayside has a suite of employment policies which are partly designed to support all staff during periods of difficulty. Occupational Health (OH) provides a confidential, counselling service for all NHS Tayside employees that can be accessed either via self-referral or through an OH clinician. OH clinicians can also refer employees to an Alcohol and Substance Misuse clinician that undertakes regular confidential clinics within OH. Separate from Occupational Health is the Staff Well-being Centre, which also provides counselling/pastoral support for employees. Employment Initiatives 1. See below: NHS Tayside is represented on the Developing the Young Workforce Boards in both Dundee & Angus and Perth & Kinross contributing to industry awareness that will inform local school careers programmes. 3 NHS Tayside is represented at local careers fairs in Angus and Perth & Kinross and links closely with the education department of Dundee City Council to provide relevant information and specialist knowledge. NHS Tayside has engaged in Dundee and Angus with the Future Skills Programme, delivered by local councils and Dundee & Angus College, which aims to provide school pupils with relevant work experience in addition to college work while the young person is at school. Placements are being provided in Business and Administration and in Estates Services. Specific initiatives in development for school pupils involve STEM colleagues developing information sessions for colleagues in DYW and local councils to more fully inform teaching staff of the opportunities and requirements of working across STEM in the NHS NHS Tayside has a Modern Apprenticeship Framework with information in place for departments to work with relevant training providers. In addition, STEM areas are considering working with Foundation Apprenticeships NHS Tayside, through Employability Services has engaged with Barnardos, Rathbone and HELM Dundee to provide work experience placements for young people engaged with those organisations of up to 13 weeks with the possibility of guaranteed interviews for relevant jobs for a period of 6 months following course completion. Between10-15 young people will participate. Work experience placements have also been provided for the Kickstart programme aimed at young people who have been looked after. This programme links through Dundee City Council. NHS Tayside, through Employability Services has engaged with the Prince s Trust and has delivered the first Get Into Health Care Clinical course in partnership with the Prince s Trust and Dundee & Angus college. 9 young people successfully completed this course in May A second course of this type will be delivered early in NHS Tayside engages with Dundee & Angus College to deliver 3x 6 week pre employment courses per year (Healthcare Academies) in Dundee and 1 per year in Angus. A public sector /support services course will be delivered in Perth in partnership with Perth College: UHI, and Perth & Kinross Council. There is no age restriction on any of these courses NHS Tayside engages with Dundee & Angus College, Gowrie Care and Dundee City Council and Dundee University to deliver 32 week SVQ2 courses in Health and Social Care and Business and Administration. 4 2 The Improving Employability Subgroup works in partnership with the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) and Community Based /Third Sector Organisations from across Tayside. The function of the group is to support people who may have a variety of barriers to work including disabilities to relevant training and education towards sustainable and positive destinations. This can be done through providing relevant information and advice on necessary qualifications and skills, or through accessing work experience in relevant parts of the organisation where there will be support. NHS Tayside continues to engage with the Glasgow Centre for Inclusive Living through providing relevant work experience and exposure to the wider workplace.
