2 Who are we? We are Commissioners Working Together a collaborative of eight clinical commissioning groups and NHS England across South and Mid Yorkshire, Bassetlaw and North Derbyshire.

3 Who are we? We are working in partnership with the NHS trusts across the same area to look at how children s surgery should be provided in the future.

5 For some services, there won t be enough trained and experienced doctors, nurses and healthcare staff in the future and that the NHS costs more than there is money to run it.

6 We know that across our region some people have better experiences, better outcomes and better access to services than others. We want everyone to experience the highest quality and safest service possible.

7 Staying the same isn t an option for the future. We need to work across a wider area to bring about excellent healthcare together and make sure everyone has the same access and outcomes.

8 Children s surgery is one of the areas we are looking at.

9 There are several reasons for the review of children s surgery, these include:

10 Different district general hospitals refer people to specialist centres in different ways

11 Doctors who work in smaller hospitals don t see as many cases as the bigger hospitals

12 There is a national shortage of some health care professionals

13 We want to: Provide safe, equal and sustainable access to children s surgery, delivered by experienced staff

14 We want to: Improve outcomes for children Reduce unnecessary referrals and interventions

15 Doctors, nurses and healthcare staff all agree that the way children s surgery is provided needs to change. This could include how we provide services locally and how you access them.

16 People tell us they want their care to be as close to home as possible and this is what we are trying to do. We want to plan and buy as much of your care as close to you as we can.

17 However, for more specialist treatment, we will need some regional centres of excellence.

21 The first two are not viable. We are therefore looking at the third option working across all the hospitals in the area in a way yet to be determined.

22 We are asking parents, carers and young people what matters to them when accessing care and treatment. We will take all the feedback and it will be used to shape the options and plans before we consult on changes.

23 We will be very clear in the options how your voice has influenced the plans.

24 The formal consultation is expected to start at the end of May 2016.
