2 1. Call to Order Felix Lopez called the meeting to order. 2. Approval of the April 13, 2010 CASSC Minutes The minutes of the April 13, 2010 meeting were approved as submitted. 3. Provost s Updates Legislation Update If approved by the Governor, the budgets for Community Colleges will be increased by 8%. Hialeah Campus The Hialeah Campus has been approved for funds to start construction of a new building. Program/Discipline Specific Student Learning Outcomes MDC is developing Student Learning Outcomes for each of its academic programs and disciplines as well as a related process for assessment and improvement. The initiative stems from MDC s commitment to continually strengthen student learning. The results to date will be part of the MDC Fifth-Year Report to be submitted to the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges early this fall. 4. Curriculum School of Aviation Jeffery Thomas presented the request to delete AVS2000 from the Aviation Administration Program. Course Deletion Program Title: Aviation Administration (26028) Campus: 5 Effective Term: Course No. Title AVS2000 Avionics Rationale: Course has not been taught in five years. Changes include four program options within the School of Nursing which require the same courses and sometimes the sequencing of the courses changes. Change Existing Courses Course Description Campus: 4 Course No. Course Title NUR1142 Introduction to Nursing Math/Pharmacy Course Description: The student will learn basic concepts of medications including history, drug nomenclature, sources of drug information, federal drug laws and standards, classifications of medications, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, variables affecting medication actions and adverse effects of medications. It also promotes learning the conceptual and mathematical operations necessary for safe and effective administration of oral, topical, and parenteral medications to adults. Application of the nursing process to medication therapy is discussed. Prerequisites: Program admission; co requisites: NUR 1025, 1025C, 1060C or NUR 1002, 1002L. (1 hr. lecture) Course No. Course Title NUR2212 Advanced Medical Surgical Nursing Course Description: This course explores the medical surgical nursing care of clients with complex alterations in health. Students will learn advanced concepts in medical surgical nursing which will be discussed within a body systems framework focusing on the nurse s role in meeting the needs of the client, family, and community. Pre-requisites: NUR 1211, 1211L, 1214C or NUR 1002, 1002L;, 1142, 2310, 2310L, 2420, 2420L, 2680L. Co-requisites: NUR 2212L. Laboratory fee. A.S. degree only. (3 hr. lecture) Course No. Course Title NUR2212L Advanced Medical Surgical Nursing Clinical Course Description: This course provides students with the opportunity to apply advanced concepts of medical surgical nursing. Students will learn to provide health care delivery in both in-patient and community settings. Students will focus on the nurse s role in meeting the needs of the client, family and community. Students will be encouraged to actively participate in projects assisting clients in preventive care and maintenance of health. Pre-requisites: NUR 1211, 1211L, 1214C or 1002, 1002L; 1142, 2310, 2310L, 2420, 2420L, 2680L; Co-requisites: NUR Laboratory fee. A.S. degree only. (9 hr. clinical) Course No. Course Title NUR2310 Pediatric Nursing Course Description: This course provides a family centered approach to the nursing care of pediatric clients and their families. Students will learn the nurse s role in meeting the short and long term needs of the pediatric client, family, and community through preventative, therapeutic and palliative care, with 17

(2 hr. lecture) Course No. Course Title NUR2310L Pediatric Nursing Clinical Course Description: This course allowa the student to apply the nursing process to the care of clients in selected pediatric clinical settings. Students will learn to observe cultural diversity and implement care to the pediatric client, family, and community through preventive, therapeutic and palliative measures. (3 hr. clinical) Course No. Course Title NUR2420 Obstetrical Nursing Course Description: This course provides a family centered approach to the nursing care of obstetrical clients and their families. Students will learn to assess the pregnant client, to implement caring behaviors for the laboring client, educate the postpartum client, manage the care of the newborn and collaboration of care for the high risk client. Pre-requisites: NUR 1211, 1211L, 1214C or NUR 1002, 1002L; Co-requisites: NUR 2310, 2310L 2420L, 2680L. Laboratory fee. A.S. degree only. ( 2 hr. lecture) Course No. Course Title NUR2420L Obstetrical Nursing Clinical Course Description: The course provides an introduction to obstetrical nursing clinical practice. Students will learn to apply the nursing process to the care of clients in selected obstetrical clinical settings. ( 3 hr. clincal) Course No. Course Title NUR2520 Psychiatric Nursing Course Description: This course introduces students to the basic concepts of psychiatric nursing. Students will learn to provide care in in-patient and community settings. Focusing on the nurse's role in meeting the needs of the patient, family, and the community. (2 hr. lecture) Course No. Course Title NUR2520L Psychiatric Nursing Clinical Course Description: This course provides the student opportunities to apply concepts of psychiatric nursing. Students will learn psychiatric procedures for both in-patient and in the community settings which will focus on the nurse s role on meeting the needs of the client, family, and community. Students will be encouraged to actively participate in projects assisting clients in preventative care and maintenance of mental health. (6 hour clinical/lab) Course No. Course Title NUR2680L Community Health Nursing Course Description: This laboratory course assists students in applying knowledge of community health resources. Students will learn to manage community health resources to support the delivery of care to the childbearing/childrearing families. Special emphasis is placed on the understanding of 18

51 UNANIMOUS APPROVAL 31 IN FAVOR 0 OPPOSED CASSC Research and Testing Committee Change The CASSC Research and Testing Committee consist of faculty members, administrators, and a student representative. This includes current representation from an Advisement and Career Services Support Staff member. In order to bring the Advisement and Career Services representative up to the same level as others on the committee; the Advisement and Career Services Directors are recommending that their representation on this committee be changed from Support Staff/Advisement Representative to Advisement and Career Services Director or designee. This change is supported by the CASSC Research and Testing Committee. This change supports the Committee s ability to meet its responsibilities in a timely manner by allowing for immediate approval of decisions requiring authorization from an Advisement and Career Service administrator. 11. Informational Items Accommodations Provided for Students with Disabilities - TMOP Silvio Rodriguez presented updates to the guidelines concerning the accommodations available for students with disabilities, including the granting of substitutions, modifications, or waivers of requirements for admission or graduation for students with disabilities. School of Justice Harry Hoffman presented state mandated changes to the Correctional Officer County and State and Law Enforcement Officer Vocational Credit Certificate programs to delete CJK0050 Criminal Justice Defensive Tactics and CJK0006 Criminal Justice Introduction and Law. 12.
