9 ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES AND ENGINEERING Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH) The BSPH is an undergraduate degree intended to prepare students with a fundamental grounding in the basic and applied sciences for advanced scientific education, professional schools, or careers in practice in the field of public health with emphasis in environmental health sciences. BSPH graduates will be able to demonstrate a basic level of understanding in the fundamental sciences; describe the relationship between public health and environmental sciences and engineering; identify major issues in environmental sciences and engineering; describe significant regulatory components that have shaped environmental policy; and demonstrate written and oral communication skills related to environmental sciences and engineering issues within a public health context. All BSPH students are required to gain understanding of the foundational principles of physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics. BSPH students enter the Department after having completed the General College Requirements in the College of Arts & Sciences, typically completed in the first two years of undergraduate study. 17 EPIDEMIOLOGY Master of Public Health (MPH) The Master of Public Health (MPH) is a terminal degree program for physicians and other doctoral-level professionals. Students admitted to the MPH degree program must have a prior doctoral degree (MD, DVM, DDS, PhD, etc.) or must be currently enrolled in a doctoral program. 20 Master of Science in Clinical Research (MSCR) Applicants to the MSCR degree program should have completed training in a primary substantive research or clinical area. Successful applicants will have already completed a doctoral degree. (Students currently enrolled in professional programs (MD, DDS, PharmD, etc) are not eligible. The MSCR is intended to complement the substantive training in these primary areas by enhancing the student's ability to apply appropriate research methodologies to their chosen/established field of research. Applicants will be required to demonstrate a clear relationship with a mentor in this field of research to provide content area guidance during the program. Applicants who currently hold academic appointments or are employed must demonstrate sufficient protected time to complete the coursework. Core courses in the curriculum will address issues pertinent to all areas of clinical and translational research. To accommodate the special needs of different areas in clinical and translational research, participants will select one of three tracks: 1. Translational ("Bench to Bedside") - Persons with experience in basic science who are intending to continue work that will have a strong component of basic science 2. 22 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in epidemiology prepares students for careers in research and teaching, often at a university, federal or state agency, or private research institution. Students develop research and teaching skills in epidemiology through coursework and practice opportunities. The doctoral program includes coursework, preliminary doctoral examinations, and doctoral research. Students who have already earned a relevant master's or professional degree (MD, DDS, DVM, etc.) typically complete the doctorate in three to five years after admission. Students who have not earned a relevant master's or professional degree may still be admitted to the doctoral program; however, these students are required to complete the Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) in the Department of Epidemiology before they begin their doctoral coursework. 24 HEALTH BEHAVIOR AND HEALTH EDUCATION Master of Public Health (MPH) MPH students are trained as analytic practitioners. The job skills they acquire include learning how to: plan, develop, implement, evaluate, and disseminate public health programs, design multi-level interventions to prevent illness and injury, manage chronic disease and improve the community and environmental conditions that affect health, apply theory and scientific evidence in a way that maintains values of social justice and respect, and collaborate in diverse cross-cultural, community and organizational settings. A hallmark of the program is intensive field training. MPH students expand their professional skills and competencies learned in the classroom to the realities of working with organizations and the communities they intend to serve by completing an individual 200- to 400-hour practicum in the summer after their first year in the program, and by completing a year-long capstone course that engages organizations or communities during students' second year in the program. Students further synthesize and apply this learning by completing a written comprehensive examination, additional coursework tailored to their interests and a capstone deliverable (i.e., a product that individual students produce, as negotiated between the student and the organization they are working with). 27 Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) The Department of Health Behavior and Health Education offers a doctoral degree track for students who have a bachelor s degree but have not yet earned the Master of Public Health (MPH) or other related master s degree. Students in the degree track earn the Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) degree before completing the requirements to receive the PhD. The MSPH-to-PhD doctoral training track complements our PhD training program designed for students who have already earned the MPH or other related master s degree. Both training tracks are for students who intend to follow research careers that address understanding of health-related behaviors contributing to critical domestic and global public health problems and development, evaluation, and dissemination of interventions to ameliorate those problems. Applicants who intend to pursue a career as a public health researcher in the discipline of health behavior and health education should apply. Applicants will have obtained a bachelor s degree in public health, social sciences (e.g., psychology, anthropology), or a related major and typically will have had public health-related research experience. 29 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Our doctoral program prepares graduates to address critical domestic and global public health issues. Doctoral training in health behavior and health education prepares researchers who are able to advance our understanding of health-related behaviors that contribute to critical public health problems. Students who graduate from this program are also capable of carrying out sophisticated research aimed at developing, evaluating, and disseminating interventions to ameliorate those critical public health problems. Students gain research skills that can be applied to domestic and global health problems and that prepare them for leadership roles. 33 Master of Public Health (MPH, Residential) The MPH is a professional degree intended for those individuals who hold a doctoral-level professional degree (JD, MD, DDS, etc.) or a PhD, or for students currently pursuing a doctoral degree. MPH students gain a comprehensive understanding of public health philosophy, methods, and values and are provided with an orientation to management and policy-related careers in the health field. The degree is suitable for individuals who have an interest in either healthcare management or health policy. MPH graduates successfully pursue careers in health systems, hospitals, consulting firms, managed care organizations, medical group practices, government agencies, public policy organizations, public health departments, and international health organizations. Those interested in board certification in preventive medicine or public health dentistry should pay special attention to this degree. Students simultaneously pursuing a professional doctoral degree (or a PhD in another field) are awarded the MPH degree after, or concurrently with, receiving the doctoral degree. 34 Master of Public Health (MPH, Distance) HPM s distance master s program was developed at the request of the NC State Department of Public Health in 1969 to provide degree opportunities for working professionals in the public health, health services, and social services professions. The objective of the program is to educate students in the necessary management and leadership skills to run effectively, and masterfully, public health and health services organizations. The distance MPH is a managerial degree that prepares students for decisionready executive leadership of public health and not-for-profit health care organizations. Executive management and leadership includes departmental and division chiefs as well as the traditional C suite organizational functions (CEO, CFO, COO, CIO ). The core of the degree centers on the set of management and leadership skills necessary to lead organizations. Consequently students learn financial management, human resource management, health law and ethics, leadership, economic and political systems, and key analytical skills. The degree culminates with a capstone exercise that involves identifying, planning for, and selling a new public health or health services program or product. Prerequisites for admission include at least three years of public health or health services experience and current employment in a health or health related field. Content is delivered through a two-year curriculum of 12 courses in a format that includes three campus sessions of 4-6 days each per year, plus intense interactive instruction over the Internet. BaseCamps at the beginning of Year 1, and again at Year 2, are skills development workshops that cover selfleadership, effective presentations, effective writing, library search, team work, Excel functions, effective time management, concept mapping and idea generation techniques, diagramming and flowcharting processes, effective project management, and ethical frameworks. On-campus applied leadership integrative modules at the end of each semester reinforce skills learned in that semester s courses and apply them to a real business case. 36 Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) The MHA is a professional degree for students wishing to pursue management careers in health systems, hospitals, consulting firms, managed care organizations, insurance firms, medical group practices, government agencies, and other healthcare settings. In response to the demand for skilled managers, the MHA degree builds upon the program's core management curriculum strength and provides, in addition, a series of courses that familiarizes the student with unique aspects and issues of the healthcare industry. The objective of the program is to develop responsible and successful graduates who have the necessary conceptual understanding and competencies to make sound decisions necessary for assuming leadership roles in the healthcare sector. The MHA degree is designed to provide strong preparation in the management disciplines, a comprehensive understanding of the healthcare sector, and an opportunity to pursue an area of concentration. Students may concentrate in a number of areas including financial management, quality, information technology, long-term care, and global health. The department also offers four MHA dual degree programs. Under these programs students simultaneously pursue two specified study programs, which can be completed in less time than if pursued independently.
