Job purpose To provide a high quality, appropriate and effective specialist respiratory test service; providing technical reports and interpretation where appropriate. Responsible for the monitoring and performance of calibration and quality control procedures for all equipment.

3 Key duties and responsibilities 1. Responsibility for Patient/Client Care: 1.1. To provide a highly specialist clinical service 1.2. To independently undertake a range of routine and advanced diagnostic tests, procedures and provide specialist advice to clinicians accordingly To interpret lung function test results and to explain their meaning clearly to patients / carers 2. Clinical Duties and Responsibilities: 2.1. To be responsible for the daily operation of the lung function laboratory, including ensuring that all clinic administration is carried out. This includes the booking of appointments, accurately recording all activity in a timely fashion, and ensuring that results are scanned into our electronic patient record To perform competently without supervision, the following investigations, and to provide timely reports of said investigations: Spirometry and flow volume loops Reversibility studies Measurement of static lung volumes and capacities (via Helium Dilution) Gas transfer (diffusion) tests Field exercise tests Hypoxic challenge tests muscle strength tests Capillary Blood Gas measurements (training can be given) Measurements of End tidal CO2 To run our home nebuliser service Overnight oximetry 2.3. To be aware of and work within national and local clinical standards and protocols To contribute to policy and procedure development for the respiratory department. Implement policy development in respiratory department. 3. Communication and Working Relationships: 3.1. Communicate highly complex clinical and technical information to a range of staff, both medical and non-medical Generate reports for investigations performed, ensuring that results that need urgent medical attention are brought to the attention of the appropriate physician or GP To work with all members of the department to ensure the development of an effective communication network within the respiratory department To represent the department at both internal and external meetings 4. Training and Development: 4.1. To participate in training and education programmes for physicians, nursing and support staff in respiratory physiology techniques To maintain an up to date knowledge of the specialty including clinical developments, undertaking training and continued professional development as identified during the

4 appraisal process 5. Research and Development: 5.1. To perform weekly collection of statistics required for monitoring activity To participate in the completion of audits relevant to the clinical area and practice review To participate in any clinical and research trial projects within the department Implement new policy and procedure in respiratory department as required in accordance with national and local guidance. 6. Planning and Organisational Skills: 6.1. To plan and prioritise own duties, and clinics, administration and training activities within the service Liaise with multidisciplinary team to ensure seamless patient care across professional boundaries. 7. General Responsibilities: 7.1. To access, enter, change and manage information in the unit/trust s database systems in accordance with information governance protocols To maintain all equipment in a fully functional state, with adherence to appropriate quality and quantitative controls. ARTP Part 1 and part 2 assessments or equivalent Knowledge of specialist respiratory investigations and therapeutic interventions Eligible for entry onto RCCP register Experience Significant recent experience as a qualified respiratory physiologist. Ability to independently and accurately perform and report on full lung function tests. Some experience of teaching Skills / Knowledge / Abilities Knowledge of specialist respiratory investigations Knowledge of field and formal exercise test procedures Knowledge of respiratory diseases and their effects on respiratory function Research experience Experience working in a large Physiology department Experience performing specialist respiratory tests, including sleep studies, hypoxic challenge, bronchial challenge tests, capillary blood gases, Cardio Pulmonary Exercise testing. Investigations and therapeutic interventions used to treat these conditions Able to perform lung function tests independently without supervision, and understand the rationale behind the choice of test. Should also be aware of the contra indications to such tests. Ability to interpret lung function tests and to

7 explain their meaning clearly to non respiratory members of staff and to patients / carers Knowledge of working principles of the equipment in use together with its calibration, maintenance, cleansing, simple repairs and quality control. Excellent communication skills Ability to supervise and train junior members of staff and students.
