2 Professional I.V. Seminars Instructors Dan Carter N.D. Dr. Carter has been in practice since 1994 and was a full-time faculty member at National College of Naturopathic Medicine from He created the I.V. services department at NCNM Natural Health Centers where he was a clinical supervisor. He is currently in private practice in Bozeman, Montana. Virginia Osborne N.D. Dr. Osborne has practiced since 1995 in Colorado, Montana and Oregon, and has 25 years of I.V. related experience. She is a part-time faculty member at National College of Naturopathic Medicine. Her position is academic and clinical supervisor of I.V. therapy. Concurrently she is in private practice in Tigard, OR. Denise Burnham RPh. Denise Burnham RPh. has been a pharmacist for over 15 years and spent about 10 years working as an inpatient pharmacist at Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital; one year as the transplant clinical specialist and one year as the assistant drug information specialist. One year as a research clinician for a company that makes medical devices. Attended special training classes for compounding and compounded for a medical clinic for 1 year and has own compounding pharmacy for over 7 years.

Outline for the four-day seminar. 9:05-9:25 Introduction and rational for IV therapy. A short history of IV therapy. Advantages and disadvantages of IV therapy vs po and sc/im. 9:25-10:30 Fluid balance assessment: Cardiovascular/respiratory status (vital signs, quick assessment guide for fluid balance), laboratory values (what do you need to know): CBC, BUN/creatinine, liver enzymes, electrolytes, urine specific gravity. Intravenous fluids: tonicity, osmolarity, expansion and contraction, types of fluids, vitamins, minerals. Definitions: IV injection, IV push, IV infusion. IV infusion time vs volume, drip rates. 10:30-11:00 Morning break. 11:00-12:00 Complications of IV therapy, errors, wrong medications, equipment defects, dose and flow rate errors, error prevention. Emergency protocols. 12:00-1:30 Lunch break 1:30-2:00 Emergency protocols conditions, including existing, and acute with IV therapy. Medical emergency equipment, and protocols(oxygen, epinephrine, etc.) for each condition. i.e.: anaphylaxis, insulin reactions, cardiac, respiratory etc. 2:00-3:00 Pharmacology of IV vitamins and minerals 3:00-3:30 Afternoon break 3:30-4:30 Vitamins and Minerals Documentation of IV therapy, written orders, criteria, standard abbreviations, sample charting, consent forms, post treatment instructions for patients, standard of care, OSHA laws, quality assurance. State licensing and IV therapy.

4 Day Two 8:00-8:30 Equipment: IV bottles and bags, IV sets. Angiocath vs. butterfly, catheter types and needles, size selection. Care of catheters, indwelling, peripheral. 9:00-10:00 Set up procedures: maintaining sterility, adding constituents to bottles and bags, avoiding admixture in source bottles, elimination of air and water from IV sets. 10:00-10:15 Morning break. 10:15-11:00 Site selection and vein considerations. Anesthesia and other methods of decreasing discomfort and vein irritation. Insertion procedures, site preparation and taping. Practical demonstration. 11:00-12:00 Parenteral forms of formulary pharmaceuticals 12:00-1:00 Lunch 1:00 5:00 Practical demonstration and practice DAY 3 9:00-10:00 Amino Acids Indications, safe total dosages and infusion rates, adverse affects, nutrient interactions, influences on vascular fluid balance. 10:00-10:30 Botanical Medicines Parenteral forms of botanical extracts, safe total dosages and infusion rates, adverse affects, interactions and cautions. 10:30-11:00 Injectable homeopathics, colchicine, DMPS, lipoic acid Indications and administration. 11:00-11:15 Break 11:15-12:15 Hydrogen peroxide Glandular extracts, Parenteral forms of glandular extracts, safe total dosages and infusion rates, adverse affects, interactions and cautions.
