Utilising clinical-legal knowledge and skills to provide co-ordination of the utilise clinical-legal knowledge and skills to provide triage,, assessment, care, treatment and release planning for prisoners with mental illness in line with the Northern/Midland Region Prison Model of Care. To provide liaison and consultation and the facilitation of safe transfer of prisoners to Mental Health services (including Mason Clinic) utilising the Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act Waitemata District Health Board -JOB DESCRIPTION - Page 1

2 KEY TASKS Provide nursing care that reflects contemporary nursing practice, applying knowledge and skills from nursing theory and research. EXPECTED OUTCOMES Assessment of prisoners mental state, will be undertaken using accepted assessment tools and criteria. Prison medical record and the Regional Forensic Psychiatry Service clinical file will contain accurate and legible details of the assessment and other relevant information arising from that process. Each client contact will be recorded in the WDHB Patient Information Management system. Other Prison Team personnel will be informed and consulted where new information emerges from any assessment. Information from initial assessments and information arising from ongoing assessments will be carried forward into Prison Team Care planning processes. Service will be delivered within timeframes agreed with the Service Level Agreement with Corrections Case Management Establish a therapeutic relationship with prisoners on their caseload; Ensure that relevant clinical documentation is updated and current; Facilitate and co-ordinate the implementation of clinical tasks related to the Prison Teams clinical objectives; Act as a point of reference for the prisoner, Prison Team personnel, and other service providers; Regularly review the patients mental state and risks, take all necessary actions possible to ensure the safety of the prisoner; Provide education and educational material to prisoners on relevant issues e.g. signs and symptoms of psychiatric illness, medications, community services/agencies; Report to the regular clinical review on the patient s progress and current risk and mental state; Participate in Prison Team pathway planning for prisoners on their caseload. Professional Responsibilities EXPECTED OUTCOMES Prison Team Nurses undertaking the role of Duly Authorised Officers will be expected to have a working knowledge of the Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act, 1992 and attend required training. Prison Team Nurses will use their knowledge, skills and experience to: Assist employees of Prisons, Corrections, and Probation to better understand mental health issues; and To educate students who are on clinical placement with the Prison Team. Prison Team Nurses are expected to present a positive and professional face to consumers, colleagues and others with whom they have contact. Consumer confidentiality is maintained at all times to ensure the Privacy Act and Health Information Privacy Code 1994 and Code of Rights are complied with. Prison Team Nurses will ensure: Their competencies for Calming & Restraint, Fire Safety, and CPR are maintained by attendance at training sessions; They read, understand and comply with all relevant WDHB Health & Safety policies, and the particular RFPS policies applying to their own work activities; Prison Team Nurses will ensure that the WDHB organisational values and commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi are understood and modeled; That consumer rights and responsibilities are actively supported; That appropriate cultural advice is sought; That the safety of their practice is maximised by participation in an appropriate level and type of professional supervision; That they complete and maintain the requirements for annual professional certification; Waitemata District Health Board -JOB DESCRIPTION - Page 3

6 PERSON SPECIFICATION Essential Education / Qualifications NZ Registered Psychiatric or NZ Registered Comprehensive Nurse Current Practising Certificate Current Clean Driving Licence Experience / Knowledge At least two years post graduate relevant experience in mental health nursing Demonstrated experience in nursing processes, theories and concepts Awareness of the medico-legal concepts central to forensic psychiatry Preferred Post Basic / Post Graduate training in Forensic Psychiatry, Drug & Alcohol, CBT Experience in forensic psychiatry Experience in Dual Diagnosis services Training in professional supervision Experience in DAO role, or in Community Psychiatric Nursing positions Skills & Attributes Understand Te Tiriti o Waitangi and implications for practice Self motivated and capable of working responsibly in an efficient and effective manner without direct supervision Demonstrated team player Effective communicator with high level interpersonal and negotiation skill Confidence in own ability in the position of nursing Demonstrated professional expertise High level understanding of cultural/ethnic practices and beliefs and able to demonstrate the ability to undertake tasks in a culturally sensitive manner.
