1 Nursing Care Specialties Spring 2016 Medical Surgical Units Unit 41/42/45 BMT (Hematology/Oncology) This unit cares for patients with oncologic, hematologic, lymphoma or non-acute leukemia, and gynecologic malignancies. Nurses who work as part of this patient-focused team provide help and hope for cancer patients who sometimes experience lengthy stays. The BMT (Blood and Marrow Transplant) teams provide blood and marrow transplants for adult patients through a nationally accredited program. Care is provided by the interdisciplinary team in Palliative Care Suites in order to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual care needs of patients and families dealing with advanced-stage illnesses. Unit 43 Orthopedics This unit specializes in the care of orthopedic patients. Nurses will gain a wealth of knowledge and technical skills in managing a complex set of patients that have just undergone a major joint replacement surgery such as a Total Hip Replacement and a Total Knee Replacement; spine surgery; and patients that have experienced a traumatic injury that involves their musculoskeletal system. The Orthopedic patients often have many other complex health problems as well, providing the nurses with an opportunity to gain increasing medical-surgical knowledge and skill. Nurses will learn about the use of a variety of pain management modalities as well as the use of various orthopedic equipment including traction, continuous passive motion devices, orthotics, and an assortment of braces and pillows. Unit 51--Trauma, General Surgery, and Plastics The Unit 51 nursing staff closely collaborate with trauma, general, and plastic surgeons in order to provide high quality care to complex medical-surgical patients on this 27 bed unit. Trauma patients receive care for injuries sustained in motor vehicle crashes and falls, as well as injuries related to personal violence. General surgery patients encompass bariatric surgery, gastric pacemaker placements, and a variety of laparoscopic and open bowel procedures. Plastics patients include those in need of complex wound care and reconstruction or breast reconstruction surgery following breast cancer. Unit 53 -Urology and Surgical Oncology Unit Unit 53 staff specialize in the care of urology and surgical oncology patients. This fast-paced unit cares for patients needing surgical intervention to alleviate symptoms, disorders, and cancer related to the kidney, ureter, prostate, and bladder as well as the pancreas, gastrointestinal system, thyroid and parathyroid glands, breast, and other applicable systems/organs. Unit 53 provides safe, high quality, and compassionate care to our patients. We have strong multi-disciplinary partnerships and care for patients as a team of highly skilled professionals.

2 Unit 64-Inpatient Solid Organ Transplant and Renal Care Nurses on this 24 bed unit care for complex, acutely ill patients who are experiencing a renal condition or varying degrees of organ failure. As a member of the transplant care team, nurses provide care to patients who are awaiting a lifesaving organ transplant, as well as those recovering after receiving an organ transplant. Kidney, liver, and pancreas transplants are the primary solid organs transplanted at KU Hospital. 3F-Inpatient Rehabilitation Patients of all ages rely on Rehabilitation Medicine to help them recover from debilitating injuries and illnesses and learn to care for themselves using adaptive techniques and equipment. Our staff cares for patients with cerebral vascular injuries, brain and spinal cord injuries, neurological diseases, knee and hip replacements, arthritis, medically complex burns, organ transplants, cancer or renal failure. The Rehab Unit is housed in a new four-story facility on the southwest corner of 39th Street and Rainbow Boulevard. The facility's second floor offers brand new space for the hospital's Inpatient Acute Rehabilitation Facility and also offers patients and staff improved environment, services and equipment. The facility has more than doubled its current space and offers a wide range of patient amenities, including a larger gym, large showers in each room to accommodate shower benches and shower-chairs, and a kitchen and laundry to help patients prepare for self-care at home. It also offers home-like features, such as a family lounge, sleeper couches in patient rooms, and a dining room where patients can dine as a group. Acute Care Division Rotation Position This unique opportunity will allow a new graduate nurse to work on and gain clinical strength on several different units during their first year of nursing allowing for a broader range of experiences. This position will rotate in our Acute Care Division and will include highly complex medical, surgical and telemetry management of a broad range of diagnoses. After gaining experiences and building relationships on a variety of units, you will better understand the different patient populations and will have the opportunity to apply for full time positions on those units as they become available. Progressive Care Units Unit 15 Medical Telemetry/Adult Cystic Fibrosis This medical-surgical inpatient unit sees a variety of diagnoses, but we specialize in the care of adult patients with Cystic Fibrosis. The majority of our patients are in need of antibiotic therapy, respiratory management, pain management, and the organization of home health services after discharge. Unit 46- Medical Progressive Care This is a 36 bed medical telemetry unit that specializes in caring for patients with a wide array of diagnoses requiring cardiac monitoring and IV medications/infusions. Our nurses are engaged with leading edged therapies used to treat unique conditions in a fast paced, high acuity environment. Our

3 nurses have the opportunity to work with a variety of physician services in the hospital and through this develop the expertise to care for our diverse population. Unit 62 Medical Progressive Care This 22 bed unit provides advanced and specialized care to patients with a variety of medical conditions on continuous cardiac monitoring. Specialized rooms on the unit allows the team to care for pediatric patients radiation therapy as well as trial study patients need radiation therapy. Unit 62 is identified as a dedicated unit for the patient population it serves, allowing for close collaboration with the physicians and other ancillary team members. This unit is the model unit for advancing best practices in patient care and supporting spread of the established processes to other inpatient units. The participants on this team have the opportunity to be Involved in the development of these best practices and provide real time input. The unit uses the latest technology and procedures to provide innovative and compassionate care. Unit 66 - Medical Telemetry/Pulmonary Hypertension Unit 66 is a fast paced 22 bed inpatient unit which utilizes telemetry monitoring for a wide range of patient populations while still providing specialized nursing care. This unit supports expanded monitoring capabilities in their Progressive Care beds so high risk patients can safely transition from the intensive care unit. Unit 66 also plays a lead role in supporting the regions only Primary Pulmonary Hypertension program with expert nursing care that can only be found here at KU. Critical Care Units Burn and Wound Care These nurses work with an experienced multi-disciplinary team, using the latest diagnostic and therapeutic techniques to help patients heal from burns and slow-to-heal wounds. Our Burnett Burn Center provides both acute and intensive inpatient care to those who need specialized treatment and rehab interventions.. The center features two hydrotherapy bays, an operating room suite, a nutrition center and a physical therapy unit. We also provide specialized outpatient burn and wound care that includes hyperbaric oxygen therapy to enhance healing. Emergency Department This department is the only nationally verified Level 1 Trauma Center in the Greater Kansas City area. As a result, our nurses work in an unpredictable, fast-paced environment. Our state-of-the-art facility, located on the ground floor of the Center for Advanced Heart Care, allows us to treat patients who have the most serious injuries and illnesses. Members of our nursing staff also have opportunities to serve on the medical team for Kansas Speedway. The Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) portion of the Emergency Department is a telemetry monitored seven bed 23 hour observation unit. The CDU provides evaluation and care of patients whose medical needs

4 can most often be taken care of within a 24-hour time frame. A patient in the CDU receives monitoring, diagnostic testing, therapy and assessment of symptoms to determine whether he or she will require further treatment as an inpatient or can be safely discharged from the hospital setting. If a patient is deemed medically stable, he or she may be discharged from the CDU at any time during the day or evening. Examples of conditions treated in the Clinical Decision Unit include: Chest Pain, Asthma, Dehydration. The CDU also utilize a Clinical Technician role for completing technical duties (phlebotomy, performing ECG's) as well as direct patient care providers. The University of Kansas Hospital Emergency Department is considered our "sister unit." All CDU staff will be cross trained to work in the Emergency Department as well. Medical Intensive Care Critically ill patients with challenging health conditions receive the highest level of expert care on this unit. Here, our experienced and knowledgeable staff thrives on providing care for patients with complex medical conditions, such as pulmonary disease, gastrointestinal bleeding and kidney, liver and respiratory failure. Medical Surgical Intensive Care This unit is designed to provide comprehensive care for critically ill medical and surgical patients. These patients have complex medical conditions that require the highest level of expert care by our nursing staff. Being a part of our team provides opportunities to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team including: RNs, critical care physicians, respiratory therapy, pharmacy and physical/occupational therapy. We care for a variety of patients including conditions such as: pulmonary disease, gastrointestinal bleeding, cancer, sepsis, and surgical patients that require intensive monitoring during their immediate post-operative phase. It is a fast-paced environment that requires advanced critical-thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills. Neurosurgical Intensive Care Patients who are critically ill with a myriad of neurological disorders receive expert care from our neurosciences Intensive Care team. Their conditions range from spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries to strokes, brain tumors and intracranial aneurysms. Because we have a Joint Commission Primary Stroke Center, our physicians, nurse and other specialist are trained to recognize stroke symptoms and provide immediate help, improving outcomes for stroke patients. Neuroscience Progressive Care This state-of-the-art telemetry unit is dedicated to the care of the Neuroscience patient population. Nurses will work with a team of Neurospecialists in General Neurology and Neurosurgery, Neurooncology, Movement Disorders, Stroke, and Neuro Critical Care. Our patient population includes, but is not limited to craniotomy for tumors, arteriovenous malformations, and intra cranial aneurysms, craniocerebral trauma, spinal cord injury, inter vertebral disk and bony abnormalities of the spine requiring surgical intervention, movement disorders requiring surgical intervention (Parkinson's Disease, Essential Tremor, etc.), surgical intervention for chronic pain and/or spasticity

5 management, hydrocephalus, acute is chemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, sub arachnoid hemorrhage, neuromuscular diseases, neuroinfectious diseases, epilepsy and seizure monitoring. Technology utilized in this state of the art unit will include Phillips Agilent telemetry monitoring system, seizure monitoring with advanced seizure detection equipment, some hemodynamic monitoring, specialized neurologic monitoring including pupillometry, external ventricular drainage, and lumbar drainage. Surgical Intensive Care Being on this team provides opportunities to work with more than a dozen specialized surgical services and experienced multi-disciplinary experts. The staff treats complex, multi-system trauma cases, as well as patients recovering from different kinds of surgeries. It is an environment that requires advanced critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. Medical Transplant Intensive Care Here, nurses provide intensive care for patients before or after they receive kidney, liver, or pancreas transplants, as well as for those who are critically ill due to organ failure. Having an intensive care unit dedicated to transplant patients allows for continuity of care and optimizes standards of care, resulting in improved patient outcomes. Intensive care services are also available for blood and marrow transplant patients. In addition, nurses on this unit handle patient overflow from Medical Intensive Care and Surgical Intensive Care units. Inpatient Dialysis (NOT HIRING AT THIS TIME) Members of this nursing unit work together to care for patients with complex health care conditions and needs resulting from kidney disease and renal failure. Many of these patients receive hemodialysis treatments. Critical Care Rotation Position (NOT HIRING AT THIS TIME) This unique opportunity will allow a new graduate nurse to work on and gain clinical strength on several different units during their first year of nursing allowing for a broader range of experiences. This position will rotate in our ICU areas. After gaining experiences and building relationships on a variety of units, you will better understand the different patient populations and will have the opportunity to apply for full time positions on those units as they become available. Float Pool Our Float Pool provides nurses for units that require additional resources in caring for patients. A staffing coordinator makes assignments based on each nurse s skills and interests. The Float Pool offers and excellent opportunity to work in different nursing specialties and select the one that s right for you.

6 Maternal & Child Services Labor & Delivery This expert, patient-focused team helps mothers-to-be through every step of the birth process by offering support and comfort. Our Labor and Delivery area has the latest electronic fetal monitoring equipment with central display for easy, constant observation. An operating suite for Cesarean sections is just a few steps away. Mother & Baby Care New mothers and their babies receive care from a compassionate and highly skilled nursing team. Although this unit includes additional security features for your newborn, family members are encouraged to spend time bonding with the babies. Members of our staff provide mothers with breast-feeding support, education for the specific needs of their families and follow-up telephone calls to homes to ensure all families needs are met. Neonatal Intensive Care This Level III unit can accommodate 25 infants. Newborns who require comprehensive surgical or medical care are admitted to the NICU from our Labor & Delivery department as well as outside facilities. Using a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach, the nursing staff provides total patient care to the tiniest, most fragile patients. Each infant s emotional and developmental needs are addressed through proper amount and types of stimulation. Staff also helps parents cope and care for their infants through in-depth education and planning. Pediatric Care (NOT HIRING AT THIS TIME) Pediatric nurses are dedicated to providing a high level of care and comfort to their patients. They care for infants, children and adolescents of all ages who have a variety of medical and surgical conditions. The Pediatric Unit features a play room and a special family room that offers a private place for families to eat, watch TV, shower and have visitors. Our child life specialist shares toys, books, movies, and video and board games to help children feel more at home. A music therapist is also involved in the multidisciplinary care of patients. An education specialist teaches children who have longer hospital stays. The unit has extra security, although parents have 24-hour access and are encouraged to spend the night. Pediatric Intensive Care This unit provides nurses an opportunity to work with children of all ages who have complex surgeries and critical illnesses. Children receive treatment from staff specializing in general pediatrics, cardiology, gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, neurology and other areas. Surgical procedures involve specialists in pediatric surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedics, plastic surgery, and ear, nose and throat surgery. PICU patients can take advantage of the same services provided to general pediatric inpatients. Parents have 24-hour access to the secure unit. Cardiac Care

7 Cardiovascular Progressive Care Unit Acutely ill cardiovascular patients and those who require continuous monitoring and specialized interventions receive expert care on this unit. These nurses provide advanced and specialized care to patients who typically have acute myocardial infarction and congestive heart failure. Cardiothoracic Surgery Progressive Care Unit Acutely ill cardiothoracic surgery patients who require continuous monitoring and specialized interventions receive expert care on this unit. The nurses provide advanced and specialized care to patients who have undergone cardiothoracic surgeries including Coronary Artery Bypass Graft; Valve repair or replacement; Aortic Aneurysm repair; thoracotomy; lobectomy; carotidendartorectomy; and esophagectomy in addition to various vascular surgeries. Cardiac and Family Medicine Progressive Care Acutely ill family medicine and heart failure patients who require continuous monitoring and specialized interventions receive expert care on this unit. These nurses provide advanced and specialized care to patients with a wide variety of medical conditions. This unit focuses on delivering consistent nursing care for heart failure patients as part of the growing heart failure program. Cardiac Intensive Care This unit is equipped with the latest technology for patients who have cardiac-related illnesses. Patients are hospitalized for stent placement, acute myocardial infarction, chronic heart failure, cardiogenic shock, post code/cardiac arrest and pre-coronary artery bypass surgery. Nurses also care for patients before and after they receive angioplasty, pacemakers and implantable defibrillators. Cardiothoracic Surgery Intensive Care Nurses on this unit help patients who have undergone cardiothoracic or open-heart surgeries. Patients recover from major cardiothoracic surgeries under the watchful eye of experienced, caring nurses and expert physicians. Cardiac Treatment & Recovery The Cardiovascular Treatment and Recovery (CTR) Unit is a 22 bed outpatient unit whose primary function is to prep and recover patients undergoing elective cardiovascular procedures in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab and the Electrophysiology Lab. Length of stay for outpatients is typically less than 24 hours. The CTR also preps and recovers in-patients undergoing cardiovascular procedure in the cardiovascular labs and provides infusion therapy for outpatient heart failure patients. The CTR opens Monday mornings at 6:00am and closes on Saturdays by noon. The staff in CTR consists of a unit coordinator, RN s, cardiovascular technicians, and unit secretary. Cardiac Labs (Catherterization & Electrophysiology) Nurses who work in our cardiac labs are part of a team dedicated to fast diagnosis and leading-edge treatment for an array of heart conditions. In the cath lab, our interventional experts use the latest technology to diagnose and treat arterial blockages, as well as perform the most advanced procedures. The cath lab operates around the clock to provide emergency care. Procedures to

8 diagnose or treat abnormal heart rhythms are done in our state-of-the-art electrophysiology suites. One suite houses revolutionary, remote-navigation Stereotaxis technology, which allows our specialist to use powerful external magnets to guide an internal mangnet-tipped catheter safely and accurately through the blood vessels and chambers of the heart. Stereotaxis makes it possible to safely reach and treat previously inaccessible areas. Heart Center Rotation Position This unique opportunity will allow a new graduate nurse to work on and gain clinical strength on several different units during their first year of nursing allowing for a broader range of experiences. This position will rotate in our Heart Center. After gaining experiences and building relationships on a variety of units, you will better understand the different patient populations and will have the opportunity to apply for full time positions on those units as they become available. Operating Room/Procedural Care Operating Room & Pre/Post With its nationally verified Level I Trauma Center, the hospital provides emergency surgical services around the clock. In addition, our surgical teams perform many advanced and highly complex surgical procedures. These specialized services draw patients from throughout the Kansas City are, state of Kansas and many midwestern states. The hospital attracts national and international attention as a frequent trial site for new surgical devices and procedures. Often these are technologically intense procedures using robotics, computer-enhanced imaging, video, fiber optics and other devices to increase precision and minimize incision size. The coordination of staff, supplies and equipment to care for surgical patients during and after surgery demands teamwork, critical thinking and attention to detail. Interventional Radiology This area serves inpatients and outpatients of all ages and acuity levels. Our nursing staff provides routine monitoring of cardiac, neurosurgical, trauma and vascular surgery patients, as well as care during interventional radiologic procedures. Because our hospital is an academic medical center, patients benefit from the latest interventional procedures used to diagnose and treat diseases. Working for this unit offers the opportunity to practice critical care nursing in a unique setting and a growing, specialized field. Cancer Center Cancer Center

They are a major source of discovery and development of more effective approaches to cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment. NCI Cancer Centers also educate health care professionals and deliver medical advances to patients and their families. Behavioral Health Marillac Marillac helps kids with mental illness and behavioral health challenges transform their lives. Our 17-acre campus is the only one of its kind in Johnson County and provides treatment specifically for children and adolescents. Marillac provides care 24-hours a day, seven days a week. Outpatient Clinics Primary/Specialty Care Nurses in our ambulatory clinics care for patients in several specialty outpatient clinics. We have locations throughout the greater Kansas City metro area covering many clinical specialties. Ambulatory LPNs and RNs can find a location, a specialty and a schedule that is perfect for them. As a professional clinic nurse, you will establish ongoing relationships with patients while providing the best ambulatory care available in the region.
