2 FORBES TOP 25 RETIREMENT COMMUNITIES Meridian s Focus on Seniors By Mayor Tammy de Weerd, City of Meridian Meridian is recognized as one of the best places to live in America and one of the safest cities in Idaho. This is something I take great pride in as we focus on creating a community that is a great place to live, work and raise a family. What we are finding, is more and more grandparents are now choosing to call Meridian home as they visit their loved ones and fall in love with the community! That s why our senior community continues to grow. In fact, Forbes recently named Meridian one of the Top 25 Retirement Communities an accolade that meant a lot to us! We want to be sure we are making decisions with our senior community in mind. That s why I established the Mayor s Senior Advisory Board (MSAB). The 14-person board consists of people who want to make a difference and includes members who are new to Meridian as well as those who have been here for years. They are a diverse group between the ages of 50 and 70 and come from all regions of Meridian, but their common goal is to enhance the quality of life for our growing senior population. The MSAB has organized Keys to Safe Driving classes that help seniors better navigate the Treasure Valley roadways and give them a chance to qualify for insurance rate discounts. They ve also held two hands-only CPR classes, and assisted our teen group (the Mayor s Youth Advisory Council) with events such as Trunk or Treat. While putting together these events and looking for more ways to connect with the senior community, the MSAB members also created this Meridian Senior Resource Guide. We re excited to partner with the Seniors Blue Book to launch this guide, specific to our community. It gives our residents a manual for senior related resources in Meridian and it is available in print as well as on the City s website. Meridian has been discovered by our seniors as a great place to live but we are consistently looking for ways to make it even better. We have amazing senior living choices, a beautiful senior center in Kleiner Park and offer senior programming through our Parks and Recreation department.
