1 University of Southern Indiana College of Nursing & Health Professions L ea r n in g Ca r in g Co mmu n it y Volume 15, No 5 Dr. Nadine Coudret Diane Utley SEPTEMBER 2007 Dean Editor GREETINGS FROM THE DEAN OF THE COLLEGE OF NURSING AND HEALTH PROFESSIONS elcome back to returning students and a special welcome to our new students. I hope your summer was enjoyable and that you are looking forward to this year and preparing for your health care career. Faculty and staff have been busy these past several months preparing for your return. A Clinical Simulation Center has been equipped and houses a SimBaby and four adult SimMan computerized patient simulators. A new skills lab is available for students in HP0060. New teaching equipment has been added to classrooms and additional monitors have been hung for college information sharing. A new interactive classroom is located in HP2022. Cushioned benches have been placed in the halls for your use between classes. In addition to welcoming you, we are pleased to have two new faculty and two new administrative assistants join our college. They are introduced in this newsletter and you are encouraged to stop by their offices and introduce yourselves to them. They will welcome the opportunity to meet you. The reason that the faculty, staff and I are here is to teach and assist you during the time you are in our college and as you move forward in your careers. One way that you can make this coming semester more productive is to take advantage of the support that is available to you. Get together with your classmates to share lecture notes, practice new skills and enjoy each other. Call on your faculty for help and ask for their assistance. The faculty, staff and I want to help you in any way that we can. By working together we can make this a successful and enjoyable year that prepares you for your health care career. 2 major changes for college laboratories this fall Kathy Phillips, clinical labs coordinator, reports that students are in store for some re-vamping of the student labs this semester. HP 2036, the skills lab inside the Day Learning Resource Center, has been re-named and re-organized; it is now the Clinical Simulation Center (CSC). The Clinical Simulation Center will house four SimMan models and the new SimBaby. A virtual IV arm, an IV infusion pump, and a syringe pump are also new additions to the CSC. Wall units with suction and oxygen, patient transfer boards, privacy screens, and new visual and audio cameras have been added. The Clinical Skills Laboratory has been relocated to the lower level of the Health Professions Center in HP In this facility, students will continue to practice skills like bed making, bathing, and patient transfer. All the laboratories will be in use every day by students from all the health care programs. Each of the CSC units will be outfitted with oxygen and suction. Welcome, SimBaby A Friend In the Midst of Chaos Ms. Phillips is excited about the prospects of creating a hospital setting in the new Clinical Simulation Center. A nurse s station will be established in the middle of the patient units. Representatives of Laerdal Company will be on site to demonstrate advanced patient simulation cases and the use of SimBaby. Ms. Phillips will be scheduling the use of both labs for all health professions classes. Installing Oxygen, Suction Dental Programs Welcome New Students The new Dental Hygiene class attended an Orientation on August 23 with a luncheon hosted by second year students. Orientation for new Dental Assisting students was held on August 24. Monthly meetings for SADHA (Student American Dental Hygienists Association) have been set for Tuesdays, with the dates to be announced soon. Accreditation Site Visit Approaching Occupational Therapy Assistant Program will have its on-site accreditation visit September 24-26, Day Learning Resource Center Receives Facelift During the summer, the Day Learning Resource Center s décor has been updated. The walls were freshly painted, the carpet was replaced, furnishings have been rearranged, and the computers have been upgraded. Lockers are also being installed near the door in the LRC to provide some security for students belongings. A fresh environment for a new academic year!! Change does not necessarily assure progress, but progress implacably requires change. Education is essential to change, for education creates both new wants and the ability to satisfy them.
