2 11 MAIN LEARNING OUTCOMES The course provides opportunities for students to achieve and demonstrate the following learning applied to their professional practice and the degree to which they are striving. Those learning outcomes indicated will be achieved within the Associate Bachelor s Degree. Those learning outcomes indicated # will be achieved within the Advanced Certificate in Nursing Sciences 11K K1# SUBJECT RELATED QUALITIES Knowledge and Understanding demonstrate a sound understanding of the knowledge base of professional practice in health and social care within their own clinical context; K2 demonstrate an understanding of the relevant theoretical frameworks as they inform the development of their professional practice; K3 apply knowledge of global developments in health and social care in proposing innovative developments in professional practice. Learning and Teaching Methods: A range of teaching/learning methods are used within this programme to enable students to develop knowledge and understanding related to these learning outcomes and to provide the foundation for other learning outcomes below. Methods used include lectures, seminars/discussions, guided reading and use of web sites. Videos and other materials are used to support these. In some modules, elearning is used to provide or support the theoretical instruction. Assessment Methods: Assessment methods require demonstration of understanding and application of knowledge through, for example, essays, development of portfolios, analysis of issues arising from practice. The School of Nursing Assessment Schedule evaluates knowledge and comprehension/ application, as well as other aspects of intellectual skills. 11I INTELLECTUAL QUALITIES I1 demonstrate skills of analysis, synthesis and evaluation in relation to contemporary professional issues (appropriate to level of award); I2 I3 # I4 I5 I6 construct and defend a particular position in a balanced argument; evaluate published research and other evidence based materials; propose innovative and creative approaches to identify and aim to resolve health and social care problems and issues; identify the scope for health promoting activities, including patient/client education, within their area of practice and propose approaches to implementation; assess the merits and demerits of an entrepreneurial approach to service planning and provision. Learning and Teaching Methods: these qualities will be developed through activities which require students to relate their knowledge to clinical practice and vice versa. These include contributing to discussions drawing upon clinical experience, engaging in debate, developing care plans and evaluating their effectiveness in clinical practice, exploring the literature related to their area of practice. Assessment Methods: the major approaches which contribute to the assessment of these outcomes are as follows: 1. the School of Nursing Assessment Schedule assesses intellectual qualities such as analysis, synthesis and evaluation in written coursework; 2. the coursework required will require demonstration of these learning outcomes. 2

3 11P P1 P2 P3 P4 # P5 PROFESSIONAL/PRACTICAL SKILLS analyse and apply knowledge of leadership and management, as appropriate, in the professional context; demonstrate objective judgement and decision making in relation to professional practice; collaborate with others in planning and carrying through to completion tasks associated with their learning related to professional practice; use published research as appropriate in their own practice; utilise research and time management skills in planning and implementing an independent piece of work related to professional practice. Learning and Teaching Methods: building on previously acquired knowledge and skills, students will continue to develop professional skills within this programme through relating their theoretical study to practice and drawing of professional experience in studying their modules. Lectures, seminars, discussion, debates will all be used to develop professional understanding and ability to apply their new knowledge in professional practice. Assessment Methods: the assessment of these learning outcomes will be through: 1. presentation of practice related items of coursework will be used in the assessment of these learning outcomes; 2. completion of exercises within the assessment of the Research module will assess acquisition of research skills (C5); 3. completion of a dissertation (C5) 11T T1# T2 TRANSFERABLE/KEY SKILLS use information technology to retrieve data and maximise learning opportunities; utilise the skills of innovation to demonstrate an understanding of how to resource and implement new service initiatives; T3 employ effective listening skills to hear, respond and challenge the views of fellow learners; T4 T5# T6# question current practice within their professional practice; use reflection on practice to continue their own professional development; apply ethical and legal principles in their area of practice. Learning and Teaching Methods: the theoretical modules will provide the relevant knowledge underpinning these learning outcomes and they will develop the skills through exposure to situations in the university and in practice in which these skills are required. A questioning approach will be encouraged throughout the teaching of all modules. Assessment Methods: these skills are assessed through: 1. submission of coursework related to practice; 2. contribution within class situations. 3

7 12 COURSE STRUCTURE AND REQUIREMENTS FOR THE AWARD These programmes lead to the academic awards of BSc Hons in Nursing Sciences. An exit award with an Associate Bachelor s Degree is available as long as the requirements for that award are achieved, ie. students have completed the required modules at level 2, gained 240 credit points in total (at least 100 at level 2), and completed the final 80 credit points while enrolled on the programme. An exit award with an Advanced Certificate in Nursing Sciences is available for those completing a 60- credit clinically focused short course. Students completing a short course have the alternative options of: Completing this degree taking leave of absence for up to 4 years and applying to undertake a Specialist Nursing Practice qualification. At that time they would transfer to the BSc Hons in Specialist Nursing Practice and be assessed for prior learning and APELed into that programme. Students have to gain at least 360 credit points at least 120 at level 3 and not more than 120 at level 1 to gain an honours degree. Those entering this programme are assessed under CATS and informed of the credits that they can transfer in to the programme and any specific modules from which they can be granted exemption. Registered first level nurses will enter with between 120 and 240 credit points at levels 1 and 2, depending on the academic level of their initial professional qualification. Students are required to demonstrate progression in learning in the following areas: Professional Knowledge and Practice Research and Evidence Base for Practice Contextual Issues in Health and Social Care The award is based on 120 credits at level 3. Some modules are specified and are included in those contributing to the award. When more than 120 credits have been obtained at level 3, the remaining credit points are identified from those modules constituting a specific pathway (where appropriate) or studied last in the programme. 8 13 SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS AND THEIR LEARNING Students and their learning are supported in a number of ways: Induction process which ensures that they understand the context in which they are studying and develop the academic skills required. Course Director ensures that all necessary information is provided and the course is organised effectively. The Course Director can be approached by students as necessary. Advisers of Studies. Each student is allocated to a Studies Adviser who will provide academic and pastoral support for completion of the programme. Within this programme the Advisor of Studies is normally the specialist lecturer for the particular specialised area. All students will also have access to the full range of student services and facilities provided including: Information Services Department Student Support Department Sport and Recreation Department International Office Students Union Chaplaincy Support will be available to deal with technical issues related to the use of elearning 14 CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION TO THE COURSE Applicants must satisfy the following: Meet the University general entrance requirements OR demonstrate their ability to undertake the course through APEL First level Nursing qualification entered on the NMC Register or equivalent in their own country CATS for up to 240 credit points of study at levels 1 and 2 may be permitted. APEL may be included with evidence of learning set against the outcomes for the programme presented and assessed. For those entering at level 3, Research for Practice (or equivalent) and Professional Issues in Health (or equivalent study within focused area of study as in Supported Learning or Health Promotion) are required Pre-Registration nursing programmes at DipHE level will give direct entry to level 3 of this programme. The following lower level academic programmes validated by the University of Ulster provide entry to this degree programme at a level commensurate with the credit points gained: DipHE in Professional Development in Nursing [Foundation Degree/DipHE in Health and Social Care] (FE Colleges) DipHE in Professional Development in Nursing) (Work Based) [Foundation Degree in Nursing Sciences (In-Service Education Consortia)] Certificate/Diploma [Advanced Diploma] in Health Promotion Diploma [Foundation Degree/DipHE] in Supported Learning 8

9 15 EVALUATING AND IMPROVING THE QUALITY AND STANDARD OF LEARNING AND TEACHING The School of Nursing aims to be responsive to health service needs and to feedback from a wide range of sources, and aims to be innovative in continually improving quality. A number of methods are used to obtain feedback and modify the programme accordingly. Staff/student consultation enables students to raise any issues of concern related to their programme. This may be managed in a number of different ways including formal Staff/Student Consultative Meetings, meetings with a class or option group, use of questionnaires, on-line discussions. As necessary issues are forwarded to the Course Committee Annual student questionnaires are used to evaluate the quality of staff teaching Modules are evaluated on each occasion offered Student performance in theoretical assessment in monitored Annual course/subject monitoring occurs External examiners play a key role in monitoring of standards University/Faculty/School strategies support quality of teaching and learning Staff are encouraged to access a range of Staff Development activities 16 REGULATION OF STANDARDS Assessment rules External examiners Pass mark is 40% Condonement may be permitted as specified in the Regulations The following aggregate percentages are used as a basis to determine degree classification: Class 1 at least 70% Class 2 (division i) at least 60% and less than 70% Class 2 (division ii) at least 50% and less than 60% Class 3 At least 40% and less than 50% In order to be awarded a particular class of degree, students will have obtained an average mark within the parameters above, and will have marks in the appropriate range or above in modules equating to at least 50% of the credit points for the award Honours classification derives 100% from level 3 as specified in the Regulations An Associate Bachelor s Degree may be awarded as specified in the Regulations An Advanced Certificate in Nursing Sciences may be awarded as specified in the Regulations For the Advanced Certificate or Associate Bachelor s Degree, Commendation will be awarded for an overall mark of 60%, including 60% in modules comprising at least 50% of the credit points for the award. An external examiner will be appointed with experience in offering comparable programmes elsewhere. His/her responsibilities will be to: review the standard of work produced by students and compare this with work produced by students on comparable courses elsewhere comment on the quality of teaching and learning review the appropriateness of assessment methods comment on any other relevant issues 9

10 17 INDICATORS OF QUALITY RELATING TO LEARNING AND TEACHING 84% of academic staff and 92% of Nursing staff in the School of Nursing are: Registered Nurse Teachers or hold another teaching qualification or are currently undertaking a teaching qualification. The remaining Nurse Lecturers are commencing the Nurse Teachers course in the next academic year. Dr Viv Coates, a Senior lecturer in the School of Nursing, has been awarded a Distinguished Teaching Fellowship, one of two awarded by the University this year. Nursing at the University of Ulster was awarded a score of 22 at QAA Subject Review [2001] The School of Nursing at the University of Ulster gained a score of 4 in the Research Assessment Exercise and is joint 5 th in the UK [2002] At present 24 members of staff hold Doctorates and 21 are currently working towards these awards FDTL4 funding of 250,000 awarded in August 2002 for project on development of role of mentor by University of Ulster in partnership with Universities of Plymouth and Northumbria and in collaboration with Queen s University of Belfast. East Tyrone College of Further and Higher Education Nurse lecturers are Registered Nurse Tutors and all lecturers hold an education qualification All staff involved with this programme hold postgraduate qualifications, including two with doctorates All staff have obtained level 2 ICT (Information Communication Technology) and are working towards level 3. Staff are using staff development days to make opportunities for close collaboration with appropriated UU staff. 10
