2 Program Overview & Target Audience This symposium is designed as a two-day educational program with a series of lectures on adult extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The symposium will also offer the opportunity for hands-on training on extracorporeal life support technique to support cardiac and respiratory patients whose heart and lungs are unable to provide an adequate amount of gas exchange to sustain life. Subject experts will present insights into the technical aspects of the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation along with risks, benefits, and outcomes. Best practices in medical and nursing management of the ECMO patients along with how perfusion can empower nursing to manage ECMO patients in the critical care setting will be discussed. This activity has been designed for cardiovascular, pulmonary, critical care and anesthesia physicians, surgeons, perfusionists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, respiratory therapists, nurses, fellows, residents and other healthcare professionals who want to enhance their extracorporeal membrane oxygenation knowledge. Learning Objectives Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to: Discuss the appropriate care of adult ECMO patients with respiratory and/or cardiac compromise Review the risk/benefit and outcomes of ECMO technology in different clinical scenarios Describe best practices regarding the medical and nursing management of the ECMO-supported patient Define center-based interaction between perfusionists and nurses to improve management in ECMO-supported patients in the critical care setting Accreditation Physicians: The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Nurses: Penn Medicine Nursing is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. Approval # H-15 Perfusionists: The American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) has approved this activity. Designation of Credit Physicians: The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania designates this live activity for a maximum of 13.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Nurses: The program will award contact hours. Perfusionists: This activity will award 15.6 Category 1 CEU s. Physician Assistants: AAPA accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit from organizations accredited by ACCME or a recognized state medical society. PAs may receive a maximum of 13.5 Category 1 credits for completing this activity.
3 Certificates and Transcripts: A few days prior to the symposium, pre-registered participants will receive an containing directions and additional symposium information. After the symposium has concluded, all participants will receive a follow-up containing a link to conference landing page with instructions to claim your credit. Once participants submit the request for credit, the credit can be viewed on a transcript or a certificate can be printed by logging onto Disclosures The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, Office of Continuing Medical Education, adheres to the ACCME Standards for Commercial Support. Faculty disclosure information will be made available in the conference materials and syllabus. Faculty members are also expected to disclose to participants any discussions of off-label and/or investigational uses of pharmaceutical products within their presentations. Registration Fee The registration fees for Penn Medicine Adult ECMO Symposium 2017 are $500 for physicians and industry employees, $450 for STS Members, $300 for perfusionists, nurses, healthcare professionals, residents and fellows. Penn Medicine employees, faculty, staff and students will receive special course rates of $150 for physicians, $100 for perfusionists, nurses and healthcare professionals, residents, and fellows. A valid Penn Medicine ID is required to receive the special rate. Registration fees for the Simulation Training are $150 for physicians and industry employees, $100 for perfusionists, nurses, healthcare professionals, residents and fellows and $75 for Penn Medicine employees, faculty, staff and students. The registration fee includes attendance to the symposium, a course booklet and a link to view the presentations online, continental breakfasts, mid-morning and afternoon refreshments, lunch and post-symposium reception. 4 Directions & Parking The Arthur H. Rubenstein Auditorium is located on the 1st Floor level of the Smilow Translational Research Center. Smilow TRC is connected to the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine and is located at 3400 Civic Center Blvd, Philadelphia, PA. We strongly recommend you GPS or use an online driving directions site (such as mapquest.com, drivingdirections.com or googlemaps.com) for exact directions to and from your starting point or if you prefer, to take public transportation to and from campus, please visit for options. On Friday, March 31st, the 3600 Civic Center Blvd Parking Garage is open for public parking. This garage is accessible from Civic Center Blvd and is located at Civic Center Blvd and West Service Drive (next to the Colket Research Center). Smilow TRC is about a 5 minute walk from this parking garage. Parking is $20 per day. This garage is only open Monday-Friday. It is closed on weekends. On Saturday, April 1st, the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine garage (3400 Civic Center Blvd) is open to those attending the ECMO Symposium. Parking is $13-$20 per day, depending on your length of stay. Parking fees are not paid for, validated or reimbursed by the symposium.
