1 S-1: BS IN NURSING ADMISSION POLICY POLICY: Students admitted to UNLV must meet the following criteria to be admitted into the undergraduate School of Nursing Program. I. II. III. IV. V. Minimum GPA of.0 Achieve a B (.0) in the following pre-requisite courses within the first or second enrollment in the course: A. Math 120 or College Algebra (Math 12) B. Anatomy and Physiology (BIOL 22/22) C. Microbiology (BIOL 251) D. Nutrition and Development across the Lifespan (NURS 299) 1. Note: Students who completed the above classes longer than five calendar years ago and received a grade less than a B (.0) will have the opportunity to retake the course(s) one additional time. If a grade of B is achieved at that time, the student may utilize that grade in the application process, (this will be recorded as a second attempt) Achieve at least a C (2.0) in all other required prerequisite courses. Achieve 75% composite score or above HESI A2 on the first or second attempt. Students must achieve 75% for the composite score and sub-exam scores. A. Students are required to take the following sub-exams: 1. Math 2. Reading comprehension. Grammar. Anatomy and Physiology An applicant who is a non-native English speaker must provide proof of English language proficiency. A non-native speaker is an individual whose primary language in the home was a language other than English (or a non-english language) or who received K-12 (or equivalent) education in schools where English was not the medium of instruction. Admission can be granted only with the demonstration of sufficient English proficiency by a minimum satisfactory score on the test listed below. Although this policy is specific to a BS in Nursing, these criteria apply to both undergraduate and graduate students. Test TOEFL IBT (Internet) Minimum Satisfactory Score 100 RATIONALE: Data collected on previous students have indicated that students meeting the above criteria have the potential to be successful in the program and pass the NCLE. For patient safety and quality of care, a nursing student must be able to speak, listen, read, and write proficiently in English.
2 PROCEDURE: I. II. III. IV. V. VI. The Division of Health Sciences Advisors advises pre-nursing students in meeting the prerequisite courses as identified in the UNLV catalog under which the student matriculated (Attachment 1). If a Pre-nursing student does not take a UNLV course in a 12-month period, the student will return under the most current UNLV catalog. (Which ever catalog when major is declared, is the catalog that we must honor. However, if they change majors, then they must enter the most current catalog. Students who have met all prerequisites, or are in the last semester of completing their prerequisites, may make a formal written application to the School of Nursing. Students must meet in person with the DHS Advising Center Advisors and have their application form validated. Advisors will sign off their application stating they are eligible. The application form (Attachment 2) is available on the Nursing web site. Eligibility A. To determine the cumulative GPA for 2ND BAC pre-nursing students that graduated from UNLV, but are below the.0 requirement, we could calculate their cumulative GPA based on the prerequisites they have completed since they have returned to UNLV. This policy would emulate the GPA requirements for transfer students. Therefore, alumni would be treated like a transfer student and follow one of the following GPA criteria if they comply with other requirements for the BSN program (i.e., Two Attempt Policy) B. Transfer Students i. Student will be considered eligible to apply for admission into the basic baccalaureate pathway under the following conditions. 1. If the transfer GPA is.00 or above, the prerequisite course work has been completed with the required grades, and the HESI A2 exam is at or above the national mean the student will be eligible to apply for admission 2. If the transfer GPA is , 9 credits of UNLV core requirements or prerequisite course work at UNLV must be completed with a GPA of.00 to establish eligibility to apply. In addition, the HESI A2 exam score must be at or above the national mean.. If the transfer GPA is , students must complete a probationary contract in which 15 UNLV core requirements or prerequisite course work must be completed with a :00 GPA to remove the probationary status to establish eligibility to apply. In addition, the HESI A2 exam score must be at or above the national mean. Admission occurs three times a year, and application deadlines are as follows: A. July 1st for Fall Semester B. November 1st for Spring Semester C. March 1st for Summer Semester Students may apply to the nursing program only twice. S-1:2
3 VII. VIII. I. An accepted student can defer starting the BSN program only once. If they defer once, then the next time they apply and get accepted, they must start the BSN program and are not allowed to defer again. Students admitted are ranked according to the Calculation Worksheet for Admission (Attachment ). A. The minimum total points needed from the calculation worksheet in order to apply to the BSN program is Students are notified by letter sent to the address on file of their acceptance into the program.
