3 5/22/2014 Wrap Process and Need for Flexible Resources MASLOW HIERARCHY OF NEEDS STAGES OF CHANGE ADDITIONAL NEEDS: TEAM BUILDING, CELEBRATIONS, ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Sustainability VS. Reliability VS. Reality Wrap Dollars Only Exist in Wrap World. Family contribution breeds ownership and commitment. Teaching the family the skill to advocate for themselves. How to meet this need or similar needs in the future without the wrap team. We encourage or breed reliance on resources that don t exist when they are not a part of the wrap program. Is their a long term viable solution? Vignette Family: Identify family s needs and list in order of priority. What additional information would you ask for? Brainstorm sustainable resources. Identify what flex funds could be used for. What creative solutions would you have for this family? 2
4 5/22/2014 Final Activity Get into groups of 5 and pick a need from list created earlier and choose one need to review. In your groups brainstorm creative/alternative strategies to get the families needs met outside of using flex funds. Final Thoughts Questions/Comments What will you take back to your communities? How has this impacted your view of Flexible Resources? How has this impacted your view of our role as professionals with Flex Resources and how we present to families? What is our role now? 3
5 Checklist for Use of Flexible Funds Review the mission of the family. Is the need identified by the family within the context of their mission statement? Do the team members agree with the need as defined? Is the need addressed under a goal in the Family Team Plan? How has the family met this need in the past? Have the child/family s strengths been explored in relation to the identified need? Have all the family, community, system and provider resources been explored? Is the child/family interested in learning how to get this need met? Has an offer been made to help the family access a resource to meet this need? Has the team decided the amount of time/money that will be needed to meet this need? Has the team discussed the desired result from meeting this need? Has the team discussed the plan for transitioning to family/community supports? Does the team have a plan to review the use of Flexible Funds and the family/community supports transition plan at every team meeting?
6 Vignette 1 Charlie is a 12 year-old young boy diagnosed with ADHD, Mild Intellectual Delay and Disruptive Disorder NOS. Charlie lived with his biological mother, paternal grandmother, an older brother and a younger sister with no developmental delays. They all resided in one hotel room and relied on grandmother s SSI and Charlie s SSI benefits for income. Mother and grandmother struggled with her their own mental health needs. Mother consistently reported that she did not have money to buy food, pay for the hotel room or ride public transportation. Children were in need of medication due to the fact that their Medi- Cal had lapsed and they were not covered by insurance. During the most recent wrap meeting, it was revealed that the room had bed bugs and they were in need of a new place to live and their clothing and belongings were infected. Identify family s needs and list in order of priority. What additional information would you ask for? Brainstorm sustainable resources. Identify what flex funds could be used for. What creative solutions would you have for this family?
7 Vignette #2 Summer is a 15 year old youth, the 7 th child in a family of ten. She is currently on probation for vandalism at her school and is diagnosed with ODD and Dysthymia. Summer has a four month old little girl and lives with 6 of her siblings and her mother. She gets WIC, public assistance and Food Stamps. She is attending school full time and is able to take her baby to school with her. Her mother does not work outside of the home at this time and the family struggles to pay their rent on time, pay for gas and currently their electricity has been cut for the last 3 weeks. They have food in the home but are out of personal supplies such as soap, shampoo, detergent and toothpaste. She is in need of diapers and wipes and although she is able to utilize a community resource that gives baby supplies out once a month, Summer reports that she does not have transportation to get there to access the supplies she needs. Identify family s needs and list in order of priority. What additional information would you ask for? Brainstorm sustainable resources. Identify what flex funds could be used for. What creative solutions would you have for this family?
8 Process To Using Flex Funds Use these steps to aid a family in meeting their needs. A) What resources have been utilized in the past to meet this need? B) What does the Family s Personal and Social Network have to contribute? C) Who are the Programs and Professionals in the Community that may help? How? D) What are other resources that may help the family? (fundraiser, job, etc ) E) Wraparound Flexible Funds Transition Plan: How will this need be met in the future? How will this need be avoided in the future? F) Next steps/action items with assigned people. Family, Partners, Care Coordinator, Etc
