10 How Principals Can Partner with School Health Enforce implementation and compliance with state guidelines regarding school health standards. (COMAR 13a )
11 Emergency Medical Plan Develop/share the school's Emergency Medical Plan, i.e., how staff will respond to medical emergencies. o Health suite and principal to be notitied of need to call 911 health professional will make Tinal decision o School must provide adult to accompany child to Emergency Room o Staff must be aware of location(s) or Automated External DeTibrillators (AEDs) o Assure emergency cards are on Tile and accessible to health suite staff o Assure at least two school staff, other than health suite are certitied in First Aid, CPR and use of the AED
12 Emergency Exit Plan Develop/share the school s Emergency Exit Plan o Plan for students with mobility limitations, including technology dependent and medically fragile students o Identify wheelchair accessible exits o Plan for between periods, lunchtime, special events
13 MSDE K- 12 Health Education Curriculum Assure the implementation of the health education curriculum o The school nurse can provide and/or recommend speakers for classroom presentations
14 Early Dismissal Due to Illness While on school premises, students are in the custody of the school and cannot be dismissed by health suite staff 0 Health suite staff will make every effort to contact parents to discuss the child s health condition 0 Health suite staff will make recommendations to principal or principal designee regarding early dismissal 0 Principal or principal designee will make the Tinal decision regarding early dismissal of students due to illness
15 Field Trips Communicate with health suite staff in advance about Vield trips 0 Inform health suite staff at least one week in advance about planned Tield trips 0 This will allow planning for students who require medication or treatments during the school day
16 Liaison to Health Department Personnel in the School Serve as liaison between health suite and school staff 0 Meet with health suite staff and assigned supervisor at least once during each school year 0 By October 1 st of each school year provide an opportunity for health suite staff to speak with school faculty and staff about school health services 0 Allow health suite staff to make periodic health presentations throughout the year 0 Invite health suite staff to participate in Back to School Night, PTA/PTO and SST meetings
17 Liaison to Health Department Personnel in the School (cont d) 0 Invite health staff to IEP meetings, especially if there are health issues involved 0 Assure health suite staff have access to attendance information 0 Assure that health suite staff are not assigned to tasks health unrelated to health services, e.g., answering school telephone lines, making copies, assisting with dismissal or monitoring lunch periods 0 Health suite staff must be available to address health emergencies at all times
18 Provide Appropriate Facilities Requirements for Effective Health Services: Adequate unshared space that allows for two health suite staff persons and privacy/convidentiality for students requiring health services, and storage of health suite equipment and health records 0 Health suite requirements include: o 1-2 Desk and three to four chairs o Telephone o Sink o Bathroom (or bathroom designated for health suite use) o Water cooler o Access to copier and fax machine
19 Provide Appropriate Facilities (cont d) 0 Quiet space free of distraction for mass hearing and vision screening to reduce false positives and repeat screening 0 The Health Department provides: o Locked Tile cabinets o Scale and height measuring device o Locked storage cabinet o Exam table or cot and privacy screen o Wheelchair
20 Safe Environment Assure the safety of the school environment especially for students who are sick or have chronic health conditions 0 Appropriate temperature and ventilation for sick students 0 Monitor school environment or any conditions likely to result in accidents, poisoning, or the spread of communicable diseases 0 Develop with assistance from health suite, procedures for limiting the spread of communicable diseases 0 Designate space and supervision of sick students waiting for pick up (Students who do not require monitoring should not wait in the health suite due to privacy concerns. This is also true for children who have soiled their clothing.)
21 Assure Compliance With Immunizations The principal of each school is responsible for obtaining certivied records of immunization for each student and enforcing the immunization requirements. Compliance is monitored by the State. 0 The health suite will assist with the review of records as appropriate. 0 Health suite staff will assist with case management of students who are out of compliance 0 The School Health Medical Director will contact physicians and assist with medical exemptions as needed
22 Assure Compliance With Mandated School Physicals State law requires each child entering school for the Virst time to have a physical 0 Health records, including physical exam forms are to be maintained in the health suite 0 Health suite staff review physical forms to develop health plans, to address identitied health problems, and to report number of students in compliance to MSDE, as required
23 Forms for Medication and Medical Treatment In order for students to receive medication and/or medical treatments while they are in school: o o o o o The appropriate form must be completed and signed by the student's medical provider and the parent/guardian. New forms need to be completed every school year. The parent/guardian must bring the medication and treatment supplies to school Medication and treatment administration will be performed according to standard nursing practice.
