Overview All the information in this year s Symposium is applicable to the busy, clinically-oriented anesthesia care provider. Participants will hear from numerous experts in the field of anesthesiology and learn the latest information regarding a broad variety of anesthesia-related topics. Such topics include the evolving, contemporary concept of targeted medicine for the perioperative patient; brain remodeling following post-stroke and post-tbi; the development of tools to improve operating room safety; understanding and mitigating risks in the OB parturient; designing care plans for the destination LVAD cardiac failure patient undergoing non-cardiac procedures; appreciating the complexities and need for safeguarding patients who receive sedation outside of the OR; tackling commonly and not so commonly encountered problems in the PACU; the challenges in assessing the bleeding patient; and the intention of opioid analgesia not always being met. Again this year we will have our roundtable, problem-based learning discussion groups convene. In this setting participants have the opportunity to sit down with experts, discuss a topic and promote a free flow of ideas in a collegial, comfortable setting. These PBLDs will cover a wide range of anesthesia topics from OB, cardiac, ambulatory surgery, challenging clinical scenarios and many others. The topics for this annual symposium have been selected from requests of previous participants, current literature reviews and following discussions with experts in anesthesiology. Welcome and Enjoy! Target audience This symposium is designed for anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists. Slide availability This is a green conference. In order to save valuable resources, we are using an electronic format for the distribution of slides. Presentations will be available in PDF format the week before the conference online. Thank you for considering the environment. Objectives At the completion of this Symposium, participants should be able to (within their scope of practice): 1. Appreciate quality assurance cases involving labor and delivery and understand possible means to reduce risks for mother, baby and provider. 2. Discuss key knowledge points in finding ways to improve collaboration, safety and learning across interprofessional and hierarchical lines. 3. Choose and bring back the targeted preoperative medical evaluation to one s practice. 4. Describe to one s peers the neurological remodeling following stroke or traumatic brain injury. 5. Apply knowledge with gained confidence in the evaluation and treatment of the patient with difficulties in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). 6. Integrate the latest information on anesthetizing the device-assisted cardiac failure patient or the posttransplant patient who presents for a non-cardiac procedure into one s practice. 7. Review the scenarios of death in the OR, from DNR to organ donation and incorporate new knowledge into one s own practice. 8. Recognize the challenges in assessing bleeding outside of the operating room and the utility of functional clotting studies in the ICU. 9. Apply information from the new knowledge gained in improving OR safety. 10. Recognize the challenges of sedation outside of the OR and safeguarding patients from harm. 11. Examine through an engaging discussion with peers the mechanism and the clinical relevance of opioidinduced hyperalgesia. 2

3 12. Describe and discuss with one s peers the delicate balance of plastic surgery s tissue flap graft flow and the often at odds systemic hemodynamics of the anesthetized patient. Location & parking All events will take place at Westin Kansas City Crown Center, Kansas City, Missouri. Please bring a sweater or jacket, since temperatures can be difficult to control in large rooms. Parking is not included in registration. The early bird rate at the hotel is $10.00 per day if parking by 10 a.m. On Saturday and Sunday, parking is complimentary with validation at both Crown Center shops and Crown Center Pershing garages.
