1 Job Description Post: Medical Laboratory Assistant Band AFC Band 3 Directorate Of Laboratory Medicine Department: Laboratory Medicine Responsible to: Operational Manager(s) Head of Biomedical Scientist Accountable to: Head of Biomedical Scientist Job Summary The post holder will support the Clinical Services Unit in data entry and processing a variety of patient samples within the Directorate of Laboratory Medicine. To perform, under supervision, a range of routine tasks in the pre analytical section of the laboratory to ensure efficient and effective processing of patient samples. The work performed is undertaken in accordance with appropriate training and ability to demonstrate competence. To undertake general supportive technical, clerical and housekeeping duties. Key Relationships To liaise with qualified and Trainee BMS and Clinical Scientist staff, Senior BMS and Operations Managers. To liaise with medical, nursing, theatre and portering staff. To liaise with staff from other sections within Pathology Main Duties / Responsibilities After appropriate training and competency assessment, to provide day to day support to the Clinical Services Unit for accurate entry of patient demographic test request data into the laboratory s computer system. Keyboard entry of Patient Identification Data (PID) and test details into the laboratory computer system, a high degree of concentration is required as errors at this stage may not be corrected before results are released to the requesting clinician.
2 Loading/unloading of specimens onto automated analysers, and correct filing of finished samples Ensures that urgent work is given priority and that these samples are dealt with in a timely and efficient manner. Use of, maintenance and cleaning of equipment such as centrifuges and analytical equipment as required. To assess the suitability and appropriateness of samples received, liaising with scientific and medical staff as appropriate. To document, file and prepare specimens for analysis. Ensures that only specimens that have been authorised are disposed of in a correct and legal manner. Deals with sample enquiries using the laboratory archive system. Responsible for housekeeping within the section of working. To assist BMS staff in retrieving samples required from other sections. To liaise with all service users to give advice and information regarding sample requirements To prepare and freeze aliquots of plasma for further testing Takes responsibility for the disposal of infectious waste. To be responsive to the needs of patients and ensure that patients are treated with respect particularly when dealing with sensitive issues. Takes responsibility for accurately checking specimens before analysis. Liaise with GP surgeries when required to do so. The post holder must be prepared to work flexibly to meet the needs of the service; To ensure that the individual has a basic working knowledge of the laboratory computer system.
3 To act in accordance with all Departmental and Trust Policies and Procedures To communicate with Clinical and Pathology staff to resolve critical concerns. To continually improve service provision by contributing to the development of Standard Operating Procedures. To participate in an Annual Joint Review (Appraisal) with appropriate line manager(s). To act in a responsible and professional manner at all times when dealing with patients, members of the public and staff from other Directorates The above is not an exhaustive list of duties. This is an outline of the post-holders duties and responsibilities. The post holder must be prepared to work flexibly to meet the needs of the service. The post holder will be expected to undertake further tasks / duties staff not indicated here as directed by BMS staff. 4 Infection control Staff will work to minimise any risk to clients, the public and other staff from Healthcare Associated Infection including MRSA and C difficle by ensuring they are compliant with the Health Act 2006 Code of Practice For The Prevention and Control of Healthcare Associated Infections (They Hygiene Code); and by ensuring they are familiar with the Trust s Infection Control Polices, located on the Intranet.
