Teaching Field: Behavioral Health Science Higher Learning Commission (HLC) Faculty Qualifications Courses require a Master's degree or higher from a regionally accredited college or university in a related field, and currently licensed by the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners (AZBBHE), a few courses are excluded from AZBBHE licensing requirements. EDU 250-Teaching and Learning in the Community College-or equivalent must be completed within two years of date of hire The Instructional Council will evaluate any other coursework as necessary to determine if that course is within the teaching Furthermore, the IC recommends that any faculty members who may need additional graduate level coursework to meet the new HLC requirements, has their proposed course of study approved by the IC before beginning the courses to ensure that the course meets the qualifications of being within the teaching Course Course Name Instructor Qualifications Needed 101 Introduction to Ethical Counseling Issues (Change Name: Introduction to Ethical Issues) * LPC or LMFT Rationale Based on Course Competencies/Outline 1. The course reviews AzBBE Licensing: Needs someone that has been through the process. 2. Outlines function and limitations of licensed and non-licensed individuals: a. Licensed behavioral health care professionals understand to a greater degree the ethical and practical limitations. They have worked in the field with no behavioral health license and currently as a licensed practitioner. Therefore, they have the experience to help student understand the difference.
105 Introduction to Human Relations associate license by the AzBBHE 1. Covers the roles of licensed and non-licensed behavioral health professionals (BHTs & BHPs): a. Licensed individual may have a better understand of the limitations since they were non-licensed practitioners and now are licensed practitioners. 2. Covers release of information (ROIs), documentation, and confidentiality: a. At minimum, at least 4-years of experience in the behavioral health field is adequate to understand these components. * LPC, LAC, LMFT, LAMFT, LMSW, or LCSW 115 Group Dynamics experience facilitating groups in a behavioral health setting. 1. An independent licenses is suggested for teaching group dynamics to ensure that student understand the limitations of group facilitation. a. BHTs are able to co-facilitate groups under a BHP or master level therapist. Specific nonclinical groups (e.g., task groups, psychoeducation, etc.), however, can be facilitated alone at this level. 130 Chemical Dependency (Change Name: Addiction & Substance Abuse) counseling, substance abuse and additions, associate license by the AzBBHE 1. Course outline focuses on the knowledge of chemical dependency and awareness of available treatments. Someone at a Masters level, even without license, can teach this course. However, since treatment approaches are discussed, licensing was including, setting a higher level of standard and quality education. * LISAC or LASAC experience in chemical dependency within the
151 Communication Skills in Counseling I (Name Change: Communications Skills in the Helping Profession) associate license by the AzBBHE 1. BHPs, including associate level, can reinforce the understanding that student are not to practice psychotherapy at this level. They can also reinforce the understanding that they must be independently licensed to practice counseling or psychotherapy or hold a Masters in a related behavioral health field and work for an agency with required licenses in order to practice counseling. 2. Associate level can teach communication skills at the level of a life coach. 156 Supervised Practice I work, behavioral health or associate license by the AzBBHE 1. The course competencies or outline does not include any case presentations that should be addressed with a licensed professional. 2. Focus is on preparing student for a job interview and maintains a relationship with the agency. A Masters level instructor can accomplish this. 3. Four (4) years of experience was included to ensure that the instructor understands the different roles that students may fulfill during their internship. 4-years of experience in the behavioral health 168 Hospice Volunteer Training associate license by the AzBBHE or AzBPE 1. Preference is given to Social Work and psychology licensed individuals since they are commonly the ones hired in this particular setting. a. LPCs have recently been able to bill in the primary care setting b. LAMFT/LMFTs are currently still unable to bill in the primary care setting. 4-years of experience in hospice. * LPC, LAC, LMSW, LCSW, LP,
204 Counseling in Multicultural Setting (Change Name: Helping Professional in the Multicultural Setting) associate license by the AzBBHE 1. Although the course outline mentioned counseling, the focus should be on couching or helping profession in a multicultural setting. 2. An associate licensed instructor can reinforce the limitations of practicing psychotherapy without a license (e.g., must hold a master s degree in counseling or related field and practice under licensed supervision). 3. Large focus is given to cultural competency that can be effectively taught by a master s level instructor. a. Many behavioral agencies use nonlicensed master level therapist to provide staff with education on cultural competency. 205 Therapeutic Intervention Models 1. Due to the in-depth course content, including techniques, that borders the practice between nonlicensed and licensed professionals, it is strongly suggested that a licensed professional teach the course. 215 Group Process 1. Course content may boarder the practice between non-licensed and licensed professionals. Therefore, it is strongly suggested that a licensed professional teach the course.
260 Case Report Writing (Change Name: Case Report Writing I) work, behavioral associate license by the AzBBHE Minimum of 4-years of behavioral health 1. The course appears to focus on basic general writing and format skills to complete reports (e.g., incident reports). a. A master s level instructor can teach this these skills. Most agencies have HR and/or a compliance director teach this material with the help of a BHP for clinical areas. 2. A BHP was required only to ensure that students understand what types of reports fall beyond their scope of competence. 3. The quality standard protocol is to have a BHP approve clinical notes. Therefore, it would be reasonable to require a BHP to instruct the course. 263 Applied Case Report Writing (Change Name: Case Report Writing II) work, behavioral Minimum of 4-years of behavioral health In the past, GMH intakes required a specific training to obtain a liaison number. However, currently, this is no longer There are particular credentials that each agency now applies. Also, at this level, they will be conducting service plans. Tx plans can be a little confusing since therapist use Tx plans to guide their clinical treatment. 1. Suggest a licensed professional teach this course since the course outlines areas that need to be clarified. 2. Students also need to understand the limitations of analysis and development of case studies at this level of education. 290 Child and Family Advocacy education, work, behavioral health, or related field 1. The course outlines descriptive functions that are generally performed by CMs, CCMs, even FSP. Many BHPs would need the experience of BHTs to help them navigate these functions/tasks. 2. Suggest master s degree since it does provide an overview of the DSM. 4-year s of experience in behavioral health, preferably in Child and Family advocacy.
265 Violence & Abuse Matters work, behavioral 4-years of experience providing direct service and treatment for violence & abuse issues. 1. The course s primary focus is on education and awareness, not treatment. 2. Treatment is mentioned as the awareness of available to make appropriate referrals, but it is not teaching student how to treat the population. 3. No license is required since the content of the course in on psychoeducation, awareness, and making appropriate referrals. 266 Violence & Abuse Counseling (Change Name: Violence & Abuse Issues). related license by the AzBBHE or AzBPE 1. Coursework focuses on the models of treatment and intervention. 2. It also focuses on diagnostic assessment methods that require a BHP to help student understand the limitations of practice at this level of education. 4-years of experience providing direct service and treatment for violence & abuse issues. * LPC, LMFT, LCSW, or LP 268 Grief and Bereavement Issues related 1. The course s primary focus is on education and awareness and not treatment. Intervention issues in institutional settings are mentioned as awareness, but it does not teaching student 4-years of experience providing direct service and treatment for grief and bereavement issues. how to treat the population.
264 Understanding Trauma related license by the AzBBHE. treatment of trauma. 1. Course includes assessments and screening tools that required a BHT to ensure students understand their level of competency. 2. Instructors should help student understand the vulnerability of this population and the importance of referring to a specialist since it is outside of their scope of competency. a. This rule also applies to BHPs, both independent and associate licensed clinicians that are not specialized in the treatment of trauma. Certification with a nationally accredited organization. * LPC, LMFT, or LCSW 267 Introduction to Play Therapy (Changed: Overview of Play Therapy) 1. Course outlines specialized approaches and assessments that required a BHT to ensure students understand their level of competency. license by the AzBBHE or AzBPE Must be certified as play therapist (e.g., RPT or RPT-S by APT). Minimum of 3-years of experience in play therapy. * LPC, LMFT, LCSW, or LP
269 Grief Counseling Techniques (Change Name: Overview of Grief & Bereavement Treatments). license by the AzBBHE or AzBPE required treatment of grief and bereavement. 1. Course includes assessments/diagnostic methods that require a BHP to ensure student are practicing within their scope of competency for the level of education. 2. The course outlines techniques and approaches for the treatment of a vulnerable population that requires a BHP to ensure students understand the limitations of working with this population, based on their level of education. * LPC, LMFT, LCSW, or LP 270 Intro to Dance & Movement Therapy BC-DMT certifications with ADTA. experience using Dance & Movement therapy. 1. Since this is a specialty that very few independent licensed clinicians hold, the requirement of licensing and certification would cause disruption to student s completion of the degree. 2. May need to be removed from due to a lack of applicability in the Behavioral Health Field. 272 Managing Difficult Children education, counseling, Independent or associate or BCBA certification. experience in working with children. 1. Requires a BHP or BACB credentials due to the vulnerability of the population. 2. It does not require an independently licensed practitioner since the topics outlines in the course are primary psycho-educational. a. This material has been historically taught to parents by BHTs in the In fact, nonlicensed BACB certified individuals would have more knowledge of the behavioral principals, including ABA, compared to a LPC, LMFT, or LCSW.. * LPC, LAC, LMFT, LAMFT, LMSW, LCSW, LP, or BCBA
281 Introduction to Art Therapy education, counseling, social work, behavioral Independent or associate ATR, ATR-BC, or ATCS certifications by the ATCB. experience in working with art therapy. 1. This is not traditional therapy; however, any treatment of mental health disorders (e.g., depression) would require a license if you are not working under an agency that has met licensure requirements. 2. This course should focus more the credentials of ATCB. 3. Preferences was given, but not required, to ATCB credentials since this is a specialty that very few independently licensed clinicians hold. To require both an independent license and this level of certification would cause disruption to the student s ability to complete this degree. S 285 Facilitating Art Therapy Groups (Changed: Overview of Art Therapy Groups). education, counseling, social work, behavioral Independent or associate ATR, ATR-BC, or ATCS certification by the ATCB. experience in working with art therapy. 1. This is not traditional therapy; therefore, it should not be held to the same standards outlined by the AzBBHE. 2. This course should focus more the credentials of ATCB. 3. Preferences was given, but not required, to ATCB credentials since this is a specialty that very few independent licensed clinicians hold. To require both an independent license and this level of certification would cause disruption to the student s ability to complete this degree
