2 COURSE OVERVIEW EDUCATIONAL NEED AND PROGRAM GOAL Increases in chronic diseases, misuse of antibiotics, changes in technology and pharmacy law, and decreases in Medicare funding are some factors quickly transforming every aspect of health care. Upon completion of this symposium, health care professionals will be able to utilize the information provided to improve their management of patients in the current challenging practice environment. Physicians, registered nurses, and other health care professionals will be better able to collaborate with pharmacists and pharmacy techs in ensuring the most current drug management practices for their patients. This two day symposium will feature outstanding speakers covering a broad range of topics including antimicrobial resistance and management, pain management, critical policy issues affecting pharmacy s future, formulary management, reimbursements, immunizations, medication errors, cardiovascular therapeutics, management of prostate cancer, suicide triggers in patients, novel medication tracking systems and recent changes in pharmacy law. Also included this year will be break-out sessions to satisfy pharmacology requirements for nursing. This symposium offers one hour of ethics and one hour of law. NURSING PURPOSE STATEMENT The purpose of this educational activity is to enhance the knowledge of the registered nurse in the area of pharmacological management of patients in the community by the Registered Nurse in all areas of patient care by addressing antimicrobial stewardship; pain management and perioperative guidelines and best practice; human trafficking; suicide preventions; adult vaccine recommendations; cardiovascular therapeutics, prostate cancer; hyponatremia; pulmonary embolism, and a look at the life changes a medication error can make to a professional in practice. The information covered will make a significant impact in the care and management of patients receiving pharmaceutical management as evidenced by improved medication management of patients in hospital or outpatient setting. TARGET AUDIENCE This activity is designed for pharmacists, physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, pharmacy technicians and other interested health care professionals. EDUCATIONAL METHODS The format will consist of PowerPoint assisted lectures, each followed by a brief question and answer session. Participants will also take part in pre- and post- questions facilitated by an audience response system. GRANTOR ACKNOWLEDGEMENT There is no commercial support for this activity at the time of printing. ACCOMMODATIONS A limited number of rooms are being offered to conference attendees at the Holiday Inn Downtown Marina Hotel for the special rate of $105 for single and $115 for double. The presentation titled What is the Problem with Drug Prices: An Ethical Perspective has been designated by TAMHSC CBHEC for 1.00 hours of education in medical ethics and/or professional responsibility. NURSES: Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi College of Nursing and Health Sciences (TAMUCC CONHS) is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Texas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. This activity provides up to contact hours. Day 1 =9.00; Day 2 = Nurses must attend OVERVIEW each session in its entirety and complete an evaluation of the overall program in order to receive a CNE certificate. OVERALL CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES: Analyze Antimicrobial Stewardship program, strategies, and resistance and the impact of using antimicrobials to improve patient outcomes, reduce microbial resistance and decrease the spread of infections caused by multidrug resistant organisms. Examine the latest trends in insulin therapy and research. Assess leadership for pharmacy development, and health policy directions in the United States. Examine types of human trafficking, their clinical presentations and interventions for optimal mental and physical recovery of victims and survivors. Describe reimbursement programs in health care. Analyze multimodal techniques in pain perioperative and management. Deliberate with a panel discussion on formulary management. Recognize early warning signs of suicide a patient presents in the inpatient or outpatient setting. Identify current recommendations for adult vaccination strategies. Discuss the current updates in pharmacy law in Texas. Comprehend the use of novel cardiovascular therapeutic agents. Assess the current trends in the management of prostate cancer. Appraise how to effectively manage hyponatremia. Analyze the roles of thrombolysis in management of pulmonary embolism. Evaluate an in-depth look at root cause analysis of a Life Changing Medication Error and potential strategies for improved outcomes. Investigate the ethics of drug pricing. Describe novel medication tracking systems in pharmaceutical care.
