2 MEDICAL CENTER ARCHIVES OF NEWYORK-PRESBYTERIAN/WEILL CORNELL 1300 York Avenue #34 New York, NY Finding Aid to the THE RECORDS OF THE DIRECTOR OF NURSING SERVICE, NEW YORK HOSPITAL/ DEAN, CORNELL UNIVERSITY-NEW YORK HOSPITAL (ELEANOR LAMBERTSEN) Dates of Records: Linear Inches (40 Boxes) Finding Aid Prepared By: Archival Staff Unknown Date 2016 Medical Center Archives of NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell
3 Provenance These papers were received from Dr. Eleanor C. Lambertsen from 1980 through Background Nurses have been employed at the New York Hospital since its opening in A formal nursing department, however, began only in conjunction with the founding of the New York Hospital Training School for Nurses on July 9, For many years, the Hospital nursing staff was almost entirely composed of nursing students with the head of the Nursing School also being the chief of the nursing service. A modern nursing department employing large numbers of Registered and Practical nurses and nurses aides emerged after the opening in 1932 of the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. In the more than fifty years since then the Nursing Service has grown tremendously in size and function in order to perform adequately its primary mission of managing nursing needs for patient care in the hospital. In c. 1980, its name was changed from Nursing Service to Division of Nursing. Since the bulk of the records in this collection pre-dates 1980, the original title has been retained. The School of Nursing was founded in 1877 with the express purpose of providing New York Hospital with a superior corps of nurses. Known originally as the New York Hospital Training School for Nurses, it was thoroughly revamped and its name changed to the New York Hospital School of Nursing upon moving to the new medical center in The curriculum was strengthened and expanded, matriculation requirements were raised, and steps leading to university recognition of the course of study were adopted. This reorganization led in April 1942 to the affiliation of the School with Cornell University under the name Cornell University-New York Hospital School of Nursing. Two years of college study became a prerequisite for admission and graduates were awarded both a diploma in Nursing from New York Hospital and a B.S. degree from Cornell University. Because of World War II, however, this requirement was postponed and the Class of 1947 was the first full class to receive the academic degree. The Dean and Faculty of the School were responsible for curriculum and all held joint appointments in the Hospital and University. The New York Hospital continued to be the sole funder of the School. This remained the School s administrative position until its closing on June 30, Scope and Content The bulk of these papers cover the tenure of Dr. Eleanor C. Lambertsen as Dean of the Nursing School ( ) and Director of Nursing Service ( ). Material dating from before or after this period is relatively sparse. The records of Nursing Service consist of papers from practically all the various nursing departments (O.R., OB/GYN, Pediatrics, etc.); reports; job descriptions; and correspondence, The great majority of the collection, however, reflects Lambertsen's activities as Dean of the Nursing School. There is much general correspondence ( ), as well as material relating to faculty, students and curriculum. There is also material relating to the closing of the School in Of special interest are the papers of several training programs set up in the 1970s to produce nursing specialists in various medical fields. Sponsored by the School of Nursing's Division of Continuing Education and usually financed (at least initially) with federal grants, these courses included the Geriatric Nurse Practitioner, Pediatric Nurse Associate, Nurse Epidemiologist, Coronary Care Nursing and Family Nurse Practitioner (PRIMEX) Programs, among others. The records of these courses are extensive and probably comprise the majority of the papers in this collection. They should be used in conjunction with the projects' official records housed in the Archives. Researchers should also be aware of the earlier series of Director's/Dean's Papers
