Due to the level of construction equipment and works being undertaken on site, for safety reasons we will m i n i m i s e t h e movement of vehicles on surgery ground. There will therefore be NO parking on site for visitors or patients Thurs 1 st Sept and Friday 2 nd Sept. Dr Lingham has proved extremely popular during his years with us and t h e r e f o r e, n o t surprisingly, we have received over 1200 requests from patients to formally transfer to his registered list from 1 st October These requests can only be processed manually and in order to be ready by 1 st October, for those patients who have P a r k i n g i n t h e neighbouring areas and around the Linkway is available. We will be notifying our neighbours of this a n d w o u l d b e extremely grateful if visitors and patients could be mindful of where they park to avoid problems. There will be a car park warden present on those 2 days, so if you require access to disabled parking, formally submitted their written request to transfer to him, we will commence this manual transfer from end of August. Please note however that once manually processed, you will remain registered with your current GP until 1 st October, but in the background we will be able to see that you are processed ready to t r a n s f e r t o D r Lingham. please speak with him and he will, if possible, guide you to a disabled parking space in the front car park. Thank you. Drs King, Sinclair, Hatley & Gossage Dr Prasanna Lingham - Partner from 1st October 2016 This does mean that if you are registered for Online Services EMIS Web, once processed you will not have a c c e s s t o appointments online with your existing r e g i s t e r e d G P, although you can continue to book available locum GP appointments and our Minor Illness Clinic as before. Cont on p2

2 Richmond Surgery Newsletter We understand from our EMIS trainers that you should still be able to order your repeat prescriptions. However, if this is not the case, please use the alternative method of submitting an request to a dedicated repeat prescription mailbox n e h c c g. r i c h m o n d s u r g e r y - scripts@nhs.net From 1 st October, we hope to have processed all requests. We should then be able to automatically bulk switch these patients to registered with Dr Lingham and Online Services with him will commence. To complete his registered list of patients, there will also be a random selection of patients from all our existing partner GPs Drs King, Sinclair, Hatley & Gossage. As before with a new Partner, we will be unable to notify patients of this transfer due to the high costs involved. As this process is random, we are also unable to prevent any patient being part of the selection process. With over 1200 advance requests to transfer to Dr Lingham, it is clear he is an extremely popular GP. We therefore trust that any patient who finds themselves part of the random selection transfer will, in the first instance, get to know him before requesting a return to their previous registered GP. If you have been transferred to Dr Lingham and strongly object to this move, please confirm this in writing. Your request will be discussed with the GP Partner concerned.

8 Richmond Surgery Newsletter Natural Wellbeing with Osteopath Christina Hood Exercise for better health Following on from my last article on swimming, I would like to continue the theme by talking about exercise more generally. As an Osteopath, I am keen to encourage my patients to take regular exercise but often they are confused about what type to do and how to get started. The benefits and different types of exercise Most people just think of the physical benefits of exercise. However, research has shown that memory and concentration may also improve in those suffering from Alzheimer s disease and may reduce the rate of decline. Also the endorphins released in exercise can have multiple natural benefits as an antidepressant, painkiller and may strengthen our immune system. There are four different types of exercise and it is more beneficial to incorporate them all. By doing this you will create better all round health and reduce the risk of injury. Aerobic to increase your heart rate and breathing, reducing the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, cholesterol, type 2 diabetes. Strengthen increase your muscle strength by exercising with resistance (using weights, resistance bands or even water, i.e. swimming). Don t forget the importance of building bone strength too, to avoid osteoporosis, by weight bearing exercise (walking, jogging, tennis etc.) Flexibility stretching your muscles to keep more mobile whether by static stretches, yoga, Pilates roller etc. Balance our ability to balance deteriorates as we get older and so improving this with lower body strengthening exercises such as yogic balance poses, Tai Chi, helps to prevent falls. How to get started Getting started can be hard, particularly if you are in pain, however, there is strong evidence to suggest that avoiding exercise for such people, can lead to more disability. Remember that muscles that are not healthy get sore more quickly, so feeling sore and stiff after exercise, is not normally an indication of having done damage to your body, it s a natural reaction to a return to taking exercise. Start with gentle regular exercise and increase your levels slowly as your body allows. Make sure it is an activity you enjoy, otherwise your enthusiasm will wain. FREE exercise plan If you are still in doubt on how to get started or what type of exercise would be most appropriate for you, our Osteopaths are offering a free exercise assessment/plan in September and October 2016, when booked with an Osteopathy treatment. So make sure you have an exercise plan, ahead of the winter, to ward away the effects of the bad weather! Christina The Odiham Clinic
