2 Health Care Informatics and Information Technology Graduate Certificate Earn your certificate and be eligible to take your CompTIA A+ certification exam a certification which shows you are prepared to troubleshoot network and security issues across a variety of devices and operating systems. The Health Care Informatics and Information Technology graduate certificate focuses on the impact of information technology within the ever-changing health care industry. Throughout this graduate certificate program, learners explore the depth and breadth of health information systems technology and how it influences strategic planning, decision making, and daily operations. The graduate certificate curriculum emphasizes best practices in health informatics and information technology essentials, including electronic medical records, workflow, meaningful use, programming, networks, and information technology alignment with regard to clinical operations. Become an influencer in your field by developing the foundational skills to translate between health care and IT professionals with Capella s Health Care Informatics and Information Technology certificate. 3 Curriculum TRANSFER CREDIT A maximum of 4 quarter credits from previous graduate coursework may be transferred and applied to your program s requirements. Grade point average of 2.3 or higher on a 4.0 scale Whether you re trying to expand your skills or change your career, differentiate yourself quickly and make strides toward your MHA or master s in IT with Capella s Health Care Informatics and Information Technology graduate certificate. This graduate certificate s first two courses are aligned to the Health Care Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) and Certified Professional in Health Care Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS) examination content ensuring you meet an international standard of professional knowledge and competence in health care information and management systems. 3 This certificate program is not designed to prepare graduates for entry-level or advanced practice licensure as a nurse. The courses in this program may require live web conferencing activities and/or learner audio/video recordings. 4 Required Course Descriptions With this Health Care Informatics and Information Technology graduate certificate, Capella has combined the expertise of our IT and health care faculty giving you the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge you need to lead health care systems as they begin to dive deeper into data analytics and meaningful use requirements. Learners have access to Capella s exclusive virtual lab, Vila Health, that stimulates a system of health. It allows you to practice solving real-world informatics challenges, including improving interoperability, clinical workflow, meaningful use initiatives and population health. ISTM5004 Fundamentals of Information Systems 4 QUARTER CREDITS This course familiarizes learners with the basic concepts of information systems. Learners strengthen their knowledge of the component pieces of these systems: hardware and software. Learners explore the computer-program-execution process and the role of the CPU, RAM, external storage, and network connections. In addition, learners examine different types of software such as operating systems and application software. Learners without the required IT background must have completed ISTM5004, ISTM5006, ISTM5008 prior to registering for any ISTM course other than ISTM5002. Cannot be fulfilled by transfer. ISTM5006 Databases and Programming 4 QUARTER CREDITS This course focuses on the basic principles of databases, and how users, through application programs or direct database queries, are able to store and retrieve information. Learners develop a conceptual understanding of how administrators configure databases so information may be accessed efficiently and securely. Learners will also examine the computer-program-development process, examining how programmers use a programming language to specify the instructions a program executes to accomplish a specific task. Learners without the required IT background must have completed ISTM5004, ISTM5006, ISTM5008 prior to registering for any ISTM course other than ISTM5002. Cannot be fulfilled by transfer. ISTM5008 Network Fundamentals 4 QUARTER CREDITS In this course, learners develop a conceptual understanding of computer networks and how they function. Learners strengthen their understanding of the concepts of network design, network hardware, network configuration, and the basic architecture of local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs). Learners also explore the ways network administrators construct and configure networks to support user access to the Internet. Learners without the required IT background must have completed ISTM5004, ISTM5006, ISTM5008 prior to registering for any ISTM course other than ISTM5002. Cannot be fulfilled by transfer. MHA5062 Health Care Delivery: New Environments in Health Informatics 4 QUARTER CREDITS Learners in this course investigate the changing technological environment facing today s hospital leaders. Throughout the course, learners explore the many health information systems and applications now used by health care organizations, as well as examine the myriad rules, regulations, and government influences paramount to health informatics. MHA5068 Leadership, Management, and Meaningful Use of Health Care Technology 4 QUARTER CREDITS This course provides learners with the leadership and management principles used in health informatics. Learners examine the alignment of information technology with clinical operations, as well as the meaningful use of health care technology in effective organizational communications. In addition, learners identify and articulate ethical and legal policies and procedures for end users. Prerequisite(s): MHA

6 Academic Leadership F. Patrick Robinson, PhD, RN, FAAN Dean Dr. Patrick Robinson serves as the dean of the School of Nursing and Health Sciences at Capella University. Prior to joining Capella, Dr. Robinson served as Senior Vice President of Academics for Orbis Education, Dean of Curriculum and Instruction at Chamberlain College of Nursing, Executive Assistant Dean of the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing, and Chair of the Department of Health Management and Risk Reduction at the Niehoff School of Nursing at Loyola University Chicago. Additionally, Dr. Robinson is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN). He holds a BSN and MSN from Indiana University, a PhD in Nursing Science from Loyola University Chicago and has completed a post-doctoral fellowship in biobehavioral nursing research at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Christy Davidson, DNP, RN Associate Dean and Director of Nursing Dr. Christy Davidson serves as associate dean and director of nursing for Capella University s School of Nursing and Health Sciences. Dr. Davidson has been with Capella since 2010, and has been a registered nurse for almost 18 years, having previously served as a staff nurse, clinical nurse specialist, legal nurse consultant, and nurse manager. Her areas of specialty and interest include women s and children s health, leadership and management, and quality improvement. Dr. Davidson holds a DNP in Leadership from the University of South Alabama and holds both an MSN in Adult Health and a BSN from the University of Mobile. Ben Spedding, DHA Faculty Chair Dr. Ben Spedding serves as the Faculty Chair for Public Health and Health Care Leadership in the School of Nursing and Health Sciences. Dr. Spedding has taught at Capella since 2011 in the School of Undergraduate Studies (psychology program), where he most recently functioned in the interim faculty chair role. In 2013, he joined the School of Public Service Leadership as a faculty mentor for doctoral students. He has been recognized twice with the Stephen Shank award. He has served in various faculty roles since 2004 and has over 20 years of experience working in the nonprofit health care and social services arenas. His professional expertise includes responding to the health care industry s demand for determining new methods of organizing, delivering, and purchasing services. Ben states, I enjoy teaching, knowing that it assists in the development of the next generation of leaders and helps to prepare students for their roles in society as lifelong learners. 6
