1 Liver, Renal & Surgery King s Hepato-biliary and Pancreatic Service Information for patients attending appointments at King s College Hospital This leaflet explains why you have been referred to King s College Hospital for specialist tests or treatments. We have been a world leader in specialist HPB surgery and hepatology (liver medicine) for more than 40 years. We see patients from London, the South East and across the UK. Confirming your identity Before you have a treatment or procedure, our staff will ask you your name and date of birth and check your ID band. If you don t have an ID band we will also ask you to confirm your address. If we don t ask these questions, then please ask us to check. Ensuring your safety is our primary concern.
2 Why do I have to travel to London? Each area of the UK has one centre with specialist equipment and staff with expertise in a particular field, so patients get the best care possible. We are the specialist hepatobiliary and pancreatic (HPB) centre for patients in south east London and Kent. This is why you have been asked to come to King s for some tests, treatments and surgery, if needed. We provide expert all-round care for people with liver, pancreatic and/or gall bladder (biliary) disorders. This includes diagnosis, radiology, endoscopy, surgery, nuclear medicine, oncology and palliative care. Why have I been referred to King s? You have been seen at your local hospital which has decided that your case would benefit from a review by King s HPB team. If you have already had some tests at your local hospital, the results will have been sent to us. Our specialist multidisciplinary (MDT) team will review and discuss your case in detail and decide what they think is the best next step for you. Will I need more tests? If the King s HPB team decides that you need more specialist tests, you will need to come back to King s and/or travel to Guy s and St Thomas hospitals. 2
3 Your key workers Your local hospital team may have given you a clinical nurse specialist (CNS) as a key worker. They will be your main point of contact for any concerns you may have about your tests or treatment. They will know your case and co-ordinate your care. If you are referred to King s College Hospital for treatment, we will also give you a CNS to support you and who will work with your local CNS. Where will I be treated? Your consultant at your local hospital and the team at King s will work together to look after you if you are treated at our HPB centre. You may also be able to have some of your treatment at your local hospital. We will discuss this with you. Where can I find more information? You can find more information about the treatments and tests we offer on our website: You can also contact or visit the Macmillan Information and Support Centre at King s. It is in the Cicely Saunders Institute, next to the Bessemer Wing. Tel:
