Thriving Communities A three-year report of community benefit, relationships, and giving in support of a healthier Hawaii

Caring for our KP giving by the numbers: community At Kaiser Permanente, we believe total health caring for the body, mind, and spirit gives people the freedom to pursue the things they want in life. When they have access to healthy foods, fresh water, safe and clean environments, activities they enjoy, and quality health care, the effect is clear. They thrive. Kaiser Permanente s commitment to total health extends beyond the doctor s office to improving the well-being of the communities we serve. Our partnerships in the public and private sector make an impact on people, policies, and places across our island home. Together, we amplify our shared mission to build healthier communities all over Hawaii and make wellness achievable for all. Why we give Kaiser Permanente s approach to philanthropy is simple we focus on people, policies, and places. This enables us to make meaningful, lasting change that touches the lives of individuals where they live, learn, work, and play. $1.7 million invested in community health initiatives 153 schools ols impacted $445,977 in Community Relations sponsorships Statewide impact Honolulu, Maui, Kauai, and Hawaii Counties $1 million invested in safety net partnerships $2.8 million in Community Benefit grants and donations 110,000 keiki reached 70 partnerships with local organizations and institutions in support of community health

People What makes Hawaii unique? It s the people that live here. We are lucky to be part of a diverse community made up of many different ethnicities and backgrounds. However, some of our multiethnic and minority populations suffer from health disparities related to genetics, environment, and socioeconomic factors. Our partnering organizations work to remove the barriers that people in vulnerable communities face: poverty, a shortage of healthy foods, and the struggle to manage chronic conditions without adequate access to health care. Addressing these issues head-on through policy and vital services helps entire populations overcome health disparities, giving everyone the potential to thrive. All smiles on Maui Kaiser Permanente executives and physicians pictured with Maui County Managing Director Keith Regan on Aug. 27, Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa issued a mayoral proclamation to honor our community partners for the Oral Health Initiative, which helped more than 15,000 Maui newborns get a head start on oral health with free baby dental packets, education, and resources for low-income families. Breathing easier in Waianae In the rural communities of Waianae and Nanakuli, asthma is a common and chronic condition. The Hawaii Keiki bill introduced school-based health services in low-income areas, making it easier for students to access care and reducing rates of chronic absenteeism. 6 nurses serving 89 schools Kaiser Permanente has invested in Maui s babies, kupuna, and their families to promote oral health awareness in Maui Nui. Joyce Yamada, University of Hawaii Maui College Partnering organizations Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center Hawaii Pediatric Association Research and Education Foundation University of Hawaii School of Nursing Hawaii Department of Education 6 complexes 51,000 keiki reached

Policy Drinking up the benefits of water 72 Improving the health of an entire state is no small task. Policy makes it possible for many organizations to come together to create meaningful change. Kaiser Permanente works closely with our community partners to enact new policies that help shape lifestyle choices and build healthier communities overall. When government agencies, schools, nonprofits and businesses unite toward the common goal of improving community health, a transformative impact can occur. Through active advocacy and partnerships, our focus on policy helps build brighter futures for everyone. Healthier lunches for healthy keiki Nutrition policies in schools provide our keiki with healthy, fresh foods to nourish their growing bodies. Kaiser Permanente helped our state government access $30 million in federal nutrition funding for schools to serve healthier meals. participating schools 7 Students at Waihee Elementary on Maui in front of the school s new water bottle filling station, unveiled March 31, Schools are taking steps to help keiki cut down on sugary beverages, leading to lower rates of childhood obesity. Healthy hydration policies include removing vending machines and choosing not to offer sugary sodas and juices on campus. Schools who implement these policies can earn water bottle filling stations through the Hawaii 5210 Initiative, which encourages keiki to choose water whenever possible. Partnering organizations University of Hawaii Foundation Hawaii Initiative for Childhood Obesity Research and Education Hawaii 5210 Initiative complexes (6 on Oahu, 1 on Maui) 24 water bottle filling stations installed 13,000+ keiki reached

Place Healthy lifestyles aren t created in the doctor s office, but in places where we live, learn, work, and play. Kaiser Permanente s place-based philanthropy focuses on transforming the physical spaces where people spend their days in order to cultivate a healthy community. We believe that a community should be a hub for healthy, active living, where everyone from keiki to kupuna can safely walk, bike, and play outdoors. When schools, workplaces, homes, roads, and neighborhoods support a healthy and active lifestyle, the difference can be felt through our entire community. Garden Isle gets fit Kauai residents participate in Zumba exercises at the 8th annual Mayor-a-thon on June 25, The people of Kauai run, bike, and walk to greater health, thanks to a community coalition with a mission to improve the health of its island residents. Get Fit Kauai brings together local businesses, nonprofits, and government agencies to provide workplace wellness programs, safe school routes, neighborhoods that encourage active lifestyles, and events that draw hundreds of healthy participants a year. Partnering organizations Safe routes to school Kaiser Permanente s support of the Hawaii Complete Streets and Safe Routes to School bill enabled more keiki to bike or walk to school safely. The establishment of a permanent Safe Routes to School fund generated more than $2 million toward health and wellness initiatives in Hawaii schools.
