We are looking for passionate, caring individuals to join our Nursing and Midwifery Staff Bank workforce. As a bank Healthcare Support Worker your role will be supporting our nursing and midwifery staff in all aspects of Patient Care. You will have the opportunity of working in a wide variety of healthcare settings including hospital wards and clinics across the Inverclyde area of the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. Successful candidates must be reliable, motivated and passionate, be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills and work within a multidisciplinary team. Candidates must have availability to cover a range of working hours as bank work will be offered to you on an as and when basis depending on the availability of bank shifts. The Nursing and Midwifery Staff bank is a demand led service and whilst our staff bank workforce have access to regular work in line with their availability you should note there is no guarantee of work. Your hourly pay rate is aligned to the Agenda for Change Band 3 pay scale with payments made on a weekly basis. In addition, if successful in your application, as part of the induction programme for new bank Healthcare Support Workers you will need to be able to attend training days required for your role of up to 4 days. 5 Job Description 1. JOB IDENTIFICATION Job Title: Health Care Support Worker Inpatient Mental Health Job Band: 3 Department Nursing and Midwifery Staff Bank 2. JOB PURPOSE The Inpatient Health Care Support Worker is a member of the multi-disciplinary team providing care for patients in an inpatient setting. The key aspects of this role are: To provide care for individuals who have a mental illness and or a learning disability and /or present a serious risk to themselves or others. To report observed changes in the clients physical/psychological needs To maintain accurate and up to date records to ensure effective communication. To provide high quality patient care by carrying out a range of delegated clinical duties, directed by a registered nurse. In the absence of the patient s key worker the Inpatient Health Care Support Worker will be the named co-worker for individual clients to help to ensure that needs are being met. This requires regular client and co-worker meetings to support attainment of achievable goals and carrying out forward planning to ensure the needs of the client are being met at all times. The post holder will at all times ensure all actions are completed with due diligence to the Mental Health Care and Treatment Act (Scotland) You will work on an ad hoc and flexible basis to meet the needs of the service. 6 This role provides support to registered staff within the team, assisting and, where appropriate, facilitating therapeutic interventions and group work with patients. The Inpatient Health Care Support Worker works with patients on 1-1 basis and escorts patients within hospital sites and also within the community. These activities are unsupervised and there is a requirement to use initiative to deal with situations or issues that may arise. The Inpatient Health Care Support Worker is the Patients advocate where this is required. The role operates within a range of national and local policies, procedural guidelines and is also within legislation including: Human Rights Legislation National Mental Health Legislation Adults With Incapacity legislation Adult Support and Protection Legislation Health and Safety at Work 5. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Work will be assigned by the Registered Nurse To provide a range of delegated patient care duties within a mental health setting, in support of a registered nurse to ensure delivery of a high quality of patient care. Report observed changes in the clients physical/psychological needs and participate in maintaining accurate and up to date records to ensure effective communication. Escort patients on home visits, appointments, community outings in accordance with the structured programme of care. Providing at all times responsive, robust and consistent risk management, together with continuous assessment of mental state. Carries out and assists with minor investigatory procedures as requested by the nurse in Ensure that safety, security and risk management procedures are carried out to a high standard with due regard to the MHCTA and other mental health legislation e.g. search, escorting, environmental security checks, and clinical observations. These intrusive practices will be comprehensive and carried out with the required sensitivity under the direction of the nurse in charge. Therapeutic Management of violence and aggression and untoward incidents, utilising de-escalation skills, breakaway and/or management of aggression techniques when required. Implementing a crisis intervention plan with particular attention to risk. Emergency Response Duties: on a daily basis (as designated by the nurse in charge) to respond in the event of a medical, psychiatric or other emergency via a paging system to area indicated, this could be within any inpatient area on the hospital site To work within a recovery focussed model of care and will assist in all aspects of daily living both on behalf of and along with the patient Maintain good relationships and an empathic approach to clients carers and relatives and refer them to a registered member of staff where appropriate for any questions they may have on the clients condition or for any suggestions or complaints that they wish to raise. Co-operate with and maintain good relationships with other disciplines that are attending and treating clients to maximise patient care. Work within all Greater Glasgow and Clyde policies and procedures to ensure maintenance of safe working practices for patients and colleagues.

7 Maintain patient confidentiality at all times. Adhere to ward and unit procedures for the use of supplies and equipment in order to promote the effective and efficient use of resources. Maintain stock levels of all supplies and carry out housekeeping duties, to support the smooth running of the ward area. 6. SYSTEMS & EQUIPMENT Awareness of all equipment used at ward / department level. A sound knowledge is required of Moving and Handling equipment. Pressure Mattresses and beds. Computers Patient, nursing notes and all relevant documentation. Hospital Paging System Emergency Trolley Pinpoint security alarm system Clinical and management policies relevant to the clinical area, such as clinical observation policy. Safety and Security Nurse Systems: environmental checks, sharps checks, clothing descriptions and adherence to all relevant documents. Datix Under the direction of the Registered Nurse the post holder may be required to report faults in equipment used in a ward/department. 7. DECISIONS AND JUDGMENTS Planning order of work, ensuring that any observed incident, complaint or undue occurrence is reported to the Registered Nurse. Ability to recognise change in patient condition to refer on to the Registered Nurse. 8. COMMUNICATION & RELATIONSHIPS The post holder will communicate and liaise on a regular basis with the Patients, their carers / advocates and other members of the multidisciplinary team. There is a regular requirement to provide factual information with patients, using persuasion, reassurance, tact and empathy in a range of interactions in various settings. There is also a requirement to overcome barriers to understanding, for example, with patients who have physical or mental disabilities. They will also communicate frequently with other staff and services within the hospital area e.g. Facilities, Hotel services etc. 9.
