2 About the Conference About the Conference The complex world of wound care has grown exponentially. The Wound Care Team is responding by offering a dynamic two-day wound care education event. This conference serves to provide nurses, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, physicians and other members of the healthcare team with the necessary stepping stones to enhance their practice. The faculty are local, regional and nationally known expert researchers, providers and clinicians, who are passionate, invested, and ready to bring cutting edge information. This year for the first time, the conference has expanded to a full two-day event! The program format is divided with a specific focus for each day. Thursday, September 8th highlights pressure injury information, and Friday s focus is chronic wound management. Whether you are attending a single day or the full conference, your time will be well spent! The Stepping Stones to Excellence in Wound Care Conference promises to offer educational, evidence-based sessions combined with interactive networking, and a dynamic exhibit hall! We re honored to have you spend your day with us. Enjoy! Objectives: 1. Discuss the prevention of pressure injuries across special populations in adults and pediatrics. 2. Describe changes in our understanding of pressure injury etiology. 3. Identify three practice considerations for wound bed assessment and treatment recommendations in chronic wounds. 4. Describe three practice considerations for the selection of therapeutic products in chronic wound management. 5. Discuss two strategies for developing a successful professional presentation. 3 Featured Speakers Thursday, September 8th Caroline E. Fife, MD, FAAFP, CWS Co-editor of Today s Wound Clinic, Fife received her bachelor s and master s degrees from Texas A&M University College of Medicine. After a residency in family medicine at the University of Texas, Southwestern, she completed a two-year fellowship in undersea and hyperbaric medicine at Duke University, then joined the faculty of the University of Texas Health Science Center, Houston, where she served on the faculty for 23 years. She is subspecialty board certified in undersea and hyperbaric medicine through the American Board of Preventive Medicine and has been a certified wound specialist since She initiated the Memorial Hermann Center for Wound Healing, which is affiliated with the University of Texas, Houston, in 1990, and the Memorial Hermann Center for Lymphedema Therapy in She is currently the medical director of St. Luke s Wound Clinic, The Woodlands, TX. Sunniva Zaratkiewicz, PhD, RN, CWCN is passionate about the complex care of patients with wounds. She has the great pleasure of working directly with patients, nurses, and providers in both in-patient and out-patient settings at Harborview Medical Center, a safety net hospital and level 1 trauma and burn center in Seattle, Washington, where she is the program manager for Harborviews Wound, Ostomy, and Limb Preservation Service. Her work is driven by the desire to improve patient care and related outcomes through collaboration, direct care, and research. Chenel Trevellini, MSN, RN, CWOCN holds a Bachelors degree in Nursing from Carlow University Pittsburgh, PA, and a Masters degree in Nursing from University of Phoenix with a primary focus in Health Care Management. She received specialty training in the field of WOC Nursing. Practicing as a WOC Nurse Specialist in acute care for over 10 years, Chenel also practiced in home health, long term care and inpatient psychiatric settings. In her current position as WOC Nurse Specialist in the Nursing education department at St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center. Levine, MD, AGSF is a board certified internist and geriatrician with over thirty years of experience in wound care in hospitals, nursing homes, and home care environments. He is Associate Professor of Medicine and Geriatrics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and has a hospital based wound care practice at the Center for Advanced Wound Care at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan. He received his fellowship training in geriatrics at the Mount Sinai Medical Center where he began his interest in chronic wounds. Dr. Levine s professional focus is improving the quality of care delivered to elderly persons, particularly regarding wound care, and has published numerous articles on this topic. 4 Featured Speakers Friday, September 9th Jonathan N. Brantley, DPM is a board certified podiatrist, who serves as the Chief of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery and the Director of the Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency training program at the McGuire Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Richmond Virginia. A graduate of the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, he completed his residency training at the McGuire Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia. Dr. Brantley s 12 years of previous private practice experience and current academic practice have focused primarily on limb salvage, conservative and surgical management of complex wounds. Kara Couch, MS, CRNP, CWS is a nurse practitioner in the Division of Rheumatology. She practices at the Limb Preservation Center at the George Washington University Hospital. Kara received her BSN from James Madison University in 1999 before pursuing her MS from Georgetown University in She is board certified as a Certified Wound Specialist by the American Board of Wound Management. Prior to joining the staff at George Washington, Kara worked at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Kara serves as a member of the International Consolidated Guidelines Task Force for the Association for the Advancement of Wound Care and is the co-leader of the International Consolidated Venous Ulcer Guideline, updated in She lectures nationally on wound care topics and has been published multiple times in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks on wound care. Laurie McNichol, MSN, RN, GNP, CWOCN, CWON-AP is a Master s prepared geriatric nurse practitioner and a certified wound, ostomy and continence nurse. She has specialized in WOC nursing for 26 years; the first 8 in acute care, and the next 13 in the home health setting. Five years ago Laurie returned to bedside clinical practice in the role of a Clinical Nurse Specialist/WOC nurse in an acute care setting. Laurie was the President of the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing Certification Board and later served as the President of the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society (WOCN ) from She was elected to the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel s Board of Directors in 2007 and served as their President from 2011 to She is still active as a Past President in both organizations.
